Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Darwin Triathlon Club.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
They are holding something a little bit different this week
in an effort to give people a taste of what
triathlon is all about and of course get active. Now
they're holding a Progressive Triathlon. It's a great way to
get active and try the sport. And joining me on
the line is the president of the Darwin Triathlon Club,
Chris Galati.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Good morning to you, Chris.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Hi there, Katie, I'm not the president. That's my girlfriend,
babas the president.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Apologize, Barb my bad.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
She tells me what to do at home and at
the club.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
She's lovely. I'm sure she doesn't bosh you around too much. Chris.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Now, Chris, some tell us a little bit more about
this Progressive Triathlon, because if you're not the president, you're
a very active member, that's for sure.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Yeah, I certainly am.

Speaker 4 (00:57):
You know.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
The Progressive Try is the first Trithleon that I did
five years ago, and just for anybody out there who's
going to give it a go, I might feel embarrassed.
When I came out of the water at the waterfront,
I was thirteen minutes behind everybody else and they gave
me the biggest cheer.

Speaker 4 (01:14):
In the world.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
That was pretty good. So what will happen if people
want to get onto the dar and Try club web page.
It's all explained there what you'll need and where to be.
But basically, on Friday afternoon at six o'clock we'll kick
off with a four hundred or eight hundred meters swim
and then we can all hang around the waterfront and
have some ice cream to get over the fact that

(01:38):
we've been there. And then on Sunday Saturday, we do
a ride at seven o'clock at Hidden Valley and who
doesn't want to go around Hidden Valley on their pushflate
room noises exactly? And then yeah, yeah, and then Saturday
afternoon we get to run past Mindle Beach after nurses

(01:59):
walk and back to the art Gallery. We've got a
two point five k or a five k run And
if you're a come and try person, just come and try.
You can do any of the events or you can
do all three.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
How cool, now, Chris, how come Darwin Triathlon Club have
decided to sort of try it in this progressive way?
Is it really about trying to get new members or
new people to give the try us lot to go?

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah? Yeah, it's just to get some new people to
come and have a look and see and get their
confidence up really, because you know, it's pretty a daunting
thing and to try and put all of it together
in one morning, you know, have a quick race, especially
in this heat, it's not a nice thing. So we're
trying to make it a little bit accessible for everybody
at a time of year where it's sort of a
bit hotter and get people involved.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
So Chris, what are the distances?

Speaker 3 (02:50):
So it's a pretty easy one we can do. There's
two different distances. A four hundred or an eight hundred
meters swim at the waterfront, so that's one around the
back of the new display that they've got there and
then back in and we'll have water safety to make
sure you're all okay. So twelve or two laps and
it's pretty nice. It's a bit warm in the water.

(03:10):
If we're at Hidden Valley, it's a twelve kilometer ride
or twenty five kilometer ride if you're a little bit
more game. And there's actually a guy going to be
there on Saturday who's preparing for an iron Man and
he's going to do a ninety k ride. He'll go
probably quickly look out of my twenty five.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
He must be a beast, then he must be blood
a fast Chris.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
Yeah. And then on the Saturday afternoon for the run,
we can do a two point five or a five
k run. I recommend everybody just does the five k,
just feel sick. At the end of it. We'll all
go to the Seve bub we'll have coming to eat
and drink, and we'll reminisce about how bad it really was.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
Well, Chris, you write me in can't.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
I was a bit.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
Earlier in the year.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
You know, You've been talking to Brontie and I and saying,
you know, I come and do a triathlon.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
And I went and did the was it the.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Aquathon or it was like a run and a swim,
and you know I was standing around, Yeah, I stand
around waiting.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
And originally I.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Thought I'll do the short one because you know, I'm
not you know, I haven't swum for quite some time.
And then it started pouring with rain and I was like, oh,
you know what, I'll just give the longest swimmer go.
And I think it was seven hundred meters. Now, I
haven't swum that far for quite some time. And you know,
then when you're amongst all these other people. You think,
oh yeah, I'll give it a red hot go.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
And I swam as.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
Fast as I have for many years, and I got
out of the pool and thought I am going to
have a skew here, but I couldn't tried to run.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
Then yeah, that's right, and you're amazingly well you coming just.

Speaker 1 (04:47):
Behind oh, well behind her.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
I think.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
That's the way to get into it.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
It is.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Really shorter or weirder events I would and just have
in the front of it.

Speaker 4 (05:01):
Well.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
But the thing I love about Darwin Trifle and Club
though as well Chris, is you guys are so sort
of welcoming and no matter what your fitness level is,
no matter whether you've done a trifle and before, you
are so welcoming. Everybody there encourages one another. And so
I think to anybody listening this morning, if you're kind

(05:22):
of going, oh, I'd like to try, but I'm just
not really sure whether I'm up to.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
It, you won't be embarrassed and no one's going to
make you feel bad about having a go.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
No, that's right. And you know, I talk to a
lot of people who say, you know, I just wondered
I'm new here. I want to get involved in something
that I don't know what you know. The try cubs
are great things for both sides of it. You can
be a volunteer or a competitor. I'm always looking for
more volunteers and I'll tell you that now. Yeah, and

(05:53):
you know, we to get to support our volunteers come
in because it's a great way to meet people and
to be involved in the community. We've also got we
give away vouchers for Lame Way, app Rapp and Betta
because Lisa is also aware of how the value of volunteers.
But yes, good people want to get the club and

(06:16):
have a lot of fun and be active. Start and
try club Parkron. We're all interested in getting new people
to participate.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
Well, it's all about getting active and it's mentally so
good for you as well. Right, Like there's no one
feels bad. I mean it depending on how hard you try,
but no one feels bad after a nice run, right.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Yeah, that's right, that's right. And tracking the swim and
ride well this weekend. You don't have to ride it
a bike, although I'm going to make a pray to
do it.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
Well.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Our daughters do get made to a lot of sports
don't they agrease?

Speaker 1 (06:50):
We make sure they're out there being active.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Hey, before I let you go, how like, are there
any specific age groups?

Speaker 1 (06:56):
Can you be any age to give triathle on a go?

Speaker 3 (07:00):
Look, you can be in the age. Normally we run
a junior's event, but this weekend we won't because it's
a little bit difficult. But we've got a Splash and
Dash coming up and we'll have children from six years old.
This weekend. We've got the Academy children racing as well,
and so they'll be from eleven to seventeen years old,
So bring your kids. Get onto the Darwin Try Club

(07:22):
web page. Go to the sign up now for the
Progressive Try and it'll explain everything there. And if you
got any problems, just get onto Facebook and message us
and we'll sort you out.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
Wonderful stuff.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Well, Chris, it is fantastic to speak to you this morning.
Always appreciate your time, and anybody wanting to have a go,
like Chris has said, jump online and head to the
Facebook page. You'll be able to find some further info there.
