Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining me live in the studio is the Lord Mayor
of Darwin convat Scarles.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Good morning, morning, and what a wonderful morning.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
It's beautiful weather and it must have been glorious whether
on Saturday for the Jingly Water Festival and families.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
You know it's good when you have to walk ten
minutes from where you parked to go to the event.
It was so good, Katie. I was advised there were
more than four thousand people turn up the event. It
was full of kids, full of families. The weather was great,
We had a sizzle, we had the fun batch, we
had everything there, the cues for the pain face painting

(00:34):
and the cues for the other events. Patting the animals
was just so big. I couldn't believe it. And everybody
was so happy.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
And so you're reackon about four thousand people there.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
That's what my stuff taught us about in excession. Four
thousand people turn up and that's so that actually you've
got good weather and the family is going to take
their kids out. And I want how to do that
one annual event and also to expand to the other words.
That was a channel war right rapidly area And now
I would like to do it in let's say Karama area.

(01:04):
I would like to do it up in cas Aurina
and certainly down here in the city of Dawn. We
plan your space in the Esplana, we can do it.
Just bring the families out, give the kids something to do.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
I reckon it's a good idea. I think it's good
to have those different things to do. When it looks
like the council's doing well quite a bit. You're actually
hosting an international trade show this week as well.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Well. It used to be done by the Sister City
Association of Australia, which actually they haven't done anything for
a while. But we have so many sister cities in
the region and in the past we use them really
effectively for education. We're attracting students from the regions, from Indonesia,
from Ambon, from China. For cultural changes. We had people
coming from Indonesia and from China to performance here. So

(01:46):
this year I thought it was going to be a
small one. Well it turned bigger than burn Her. I've
got the Abbassador of China coming up, the Ambassador of
Greece is already here, the Ambassador of Vietnam, and the
Council Journal of Vietnam are here that I'm meeting with
them to the High Commissioner for India is here. I
even got the mayor of Santa Cruz in Calabacos, which

(02:07):
actually a sister city. I've got the people from Quanjo.
The Deputy Mayor of Kuanjoy is coming here. I've got
the Lord Mayor of Hobart, Anna Reynolds is coming up
to down because we work very clearly real to develop
this relationship. And of course that's on Thursday, we've got
a big event. But on Friday we've got an international
trade so everybody will exhibit. They are wares and try

(02:30):
to stick some businesses with each other. But the important
thing for the afternoon, the Garri Milla is the National
Food Fair, open to everybody. We're going to have a
lot of food vents. We're actually going to It's going
to be done at the esplant near the playground and
people and families can come there enjoy food either local
or in the national.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
So that's on Friday.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Friday afternoon from five o'clock to nine pm.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Five pm to nine pm, just thinking where I can
get my dinner own.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
It's going to be family friendly, alcohol free, feel free
to come down there. Kids can play the playground, you
can enjoy your food and enjoy some interaction with our vi.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
So that's longly esperate.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
That's right.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
It'd be good to see food vans there more often.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Conn We're trying to get them. But you know what
the problem is, they're so busy everywhere. They Actually I
had people, we invited people and they said, sorry, I
can't do it because I'm so busy night or I'm
so busy. And now we're trying to do that one
in the Esplanade, but also we're trying to do it
in Bandila, so we're trying to bring some vandilla. Now
we're going to do an opening in the middle of
the middle end of May. Already put the fillers out.

(03:34):
We had some people says yes, happy to come. Other says, sorry, guys,
I can't make it. I'm too busy. In calum Bay
busy everybody goes out. Yeah, because it's the dricis.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Yeah, exactly, it's a busy time of the year.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Colin.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
I've got a few listener questions. I've got one here
from Susie in Annula and it says, good morning team,
A question for corn How often are the streets in
Darwin City cleaned? I walk different parts of the city
and it's looking a bit grubby. There's broken glass or
blood and human facing quite common. We are now in
peak time for tourists and our city doesn't look great

(04:06):
at different times. Could more be done for a cleaner city?
Questions Susi in anula Suzi.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Our team is out there five o'clock in the morning
with a big pressure machine, pressure cleaning the streets. The
interesting thing is you find this kind of dirt in
certain areas, not everywhere. We have some problems in the
all of the moment because there's some construction taking place,
but the team is aware of that one and it's

(04:34):
actually the mall is in our in our focus. We're
going to clean it up. But certainly the areas around
pubs and alcohol venues. Yes, I can't understand, Kate. I
mean you live a pre a venue that you've got
a toilet, and you go one hundred meters down down
the road and you decide to go to the toilet
against the wall. Come on, guys, lift a game, especially guys.

(04:54):
Usually it's guys, not women. But yes, I understand that
we've got quite a few visitors. We try to actually
keep on top of everything. We've got so many people
to clean the streets and we've got quite a few
streets down on the CBD.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
I mean, are you noticing or have you seen an
increase in uh, you know, in some of the anti
social issues around the place again, and does that main
additional cleanups required?

Speaker 2 (05:16):
It comes and goes, so we we sometimes we notice
if there's an influx of visitors and they camp in
the parks and we see a lot of problems in
the parks. The interesting thing is now is some of
them at decide to came in casualty across the reserve
and this is not our area, so we can't do anything,
but certainly if anywhere does. And we eased points another

(05:37):
place where we regular clean up. The good thing is
we've got the prisoners that helping us with the agreement
we had with the government, and we're trying to keep
on top and we will continue to do so.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
Yeah, a couple of quick ones in terms of the
Smith Street Streetscape. How's that project coming along?

Speaker 2 (05:53):
As you see, they're progressing really really well. They actually
they dug the pits for the trees, they put irrigation
nowt and they're progressing the very fast. I'm driving, Katie.
Every time I live here, I drive there and I
tell you what, last time I went there were seven
empty carparkspaces and people.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Disingenuous to.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
And I'm happy about that. I said you before. I
sympathize with the businesses, but again, I can't do anything
if I don't dig the road, I can't put trees.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
I mean, the issue is how quickly is it going to.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Happen as quickly as we can and our target is
middle of June to have the top end where the
business are finished and we can progress the others as
it goes.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
Okay, I understand as well that there is feedback closing
on Wednesday when it comes to the municipal plan and
the budgets. I mean, have you had a chance to
look at some of those comments.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
Yes, we actually when everything is finished that we take
all the comments, who compile them and will put them
together and that would present to counsel.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
Okay, another quick one com It's coming from Allen, and
Alan asked, Hi, Katy and Crystal, Katie, can you please
make a note to ask Corn when will the council
trim overhanging vegetation in the streets surrounding the markets of
Rapid Creek, per Rap and Nightcliff, not just one straight
back but all the streets. There are motorists needing to

(07:15):
find a park, says Alan Allen.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
I travel there regularly. I go there. I haven't noticed
anything that obstruct people's parking because they're pretty good. But
if you have a problem, please let us know. Use
our application. Give us the addressive particular area. It's confidential.
We will certainly visit it and trim it and fix it.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
Con really quick.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
One.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
I know there's a number of dog behavior workshops been announced.
What are they going to focus on? And how can
people register?

Speaker 2 (07:41):
We've got it's a territory day coming and you know
the fireworks and a lot of poor dogs free cards. Yes,
so we've got the Noise for b workshop on Wednesday
twenty first of May twenty five tomorrow and Don't Bite
Bit Polite on Wednesday twenty eighth of May twenty twenty five.
You can find exactly what everything is to be held
if you look at our website. Animals or animals they

(08:04):
behave like animals sometimes and if they're under threat, they
will buy. Also, if I had a dog that used
to be freaking out with the fireworks and I had
to actually keep it inside, otherwise it would just jump
the fence and go somewhere, we have to look after them.
But again we don't know what's happening with the fireworks. Corn.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
Well, we're going to be catching up with one of
the fireworks supplies very shortly.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
Corn.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
Someone's just messaged through. I'm assuming it's a person who
messaged about the dirty Streets earlier saying please sell corn
behind wisdom monsoons.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
It has, yes, already done that one. I spoke to
our team because it was raised last time. My team
is aware of that one and we'll be targeting that
one as well.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
Con.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
That's Scarlus, the Lord Mayor of Darwin. Good to catch
up with you. Thank you.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Have a great morning and a beautiful morning.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
You too, Thank you. Thanks Con
