Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining me live in the studio. The Lord Mayor of
Darwin convat scarlets. Good morning, corn.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Morning, how are you, oh very well?
Speaker 1 (00:06):
Con they so much for us to talk about this morning,
But I have to ask. First off, I've had numerous
parents get in contact with me. They are furious after
receiving parking fines in Nakara at soccer on the weekends.
Nothing like honestly, nothing pieces people off more than when
(00:27):
you're there on a Sunday morning.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
I understand that.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
I understand people actually got fined. At the same time,
we're receiving numerous complaints from people living in the air
and they said to us, we.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Had enough of it. We all want it here. They
block a driveway.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
So we're caught in the middle of a group of
people that want to play sports.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
And I admired of that.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
I did that one as a part of myself, and
then a group of people. The reality is the over
in the carriage, it's not the best option.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
We have to fight different options. The other thing we
want to do.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
What are the other Well, we have to find out
that there's a lot of a lot of of us
down in legs I drive currently they're not used so council.
I would like to work together with the sports bodies
to find a better option somewhere there. The other thing
with no Care is do it borders a school site
so it's not open to us to actually go and
says all right, we're going to cut this big prob
(01:16):
piece of thing to put a big parking. We have
to work really with the constraints of the site. It's
a great ovel, but it's not the best ovel. It's
surrounded by suburbia, it's surrounded by a school, but it
creates a confidence.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
A lot of sporting ovals, and I actually I will
push back on I understand right if you live near
a school or if you live near a sporting oval.
I live near a school myself. People drive down my
street every single morning. That aren't meant to be driving
down there. It's meant to be for local traffic. But
I think to myself, these are parents taking their kids
to school, These are parents taking their kids to soccer.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
You know, don't be a.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Bloody Karen about it, Winge when you've actually got families
doing the right thing.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
I've got the same altitude because I used to take
my kids and do it.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
But to you before this.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Yes, people can put up with this school because the
five minutes, draw the kid and go. This is actually
starting eight o'clock in the morning and goes until four o'clock.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
In the afternoon. It doesn't understand.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
It, so it goes until lunch.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
We're very happy to sit down with a pig body
and say, right, we've got problems, we've got conflicts, because
if we play in small novels, we're going to have
continuous confidence.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Let's find the place where we can actually say it.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
In the meantime, while you look for another place, or
if you look for other options, can't you just go
do you know what? We're not actually going.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
To find there for a reason.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
And also their parkings and if I do that, one
people that live there said to me, you've got buylows
wye and enforced them.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
Well, I get that, and I'm not just saying, but
thought about all the other counselors that are now putting
their hand up for mayor as well, why don't you
all actually go, well, let's listen to the hundreds of
people that are taking their kids.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
People then and the.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Ward says, I'm listening to these people. They are my
award they complain to me as a counselor, and I
have to respond to them.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
We're in a situation where caught in the middle.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
The other thing, of course, is there's only a way
a way remove the bilos completely, and that one has
to be done by a council decision, which I think
is a bit late in the game.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Now we've got an electra.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
But what I'm saying is removing bilows here and then
everywhere is not going to solve the problem.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
What's going sorol.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
The problem is find the appropriate area where we can
do it. There are some ovels that they.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Actually in.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Other areas, they're not suburbia, and I've seen a couple
of them and I said, why we're.
Speaker 4 (03:26):
Not so you reckon.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
So you reckon rather than have the soccer there at Nakara,
look at moving it.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
To find the one that actually we can have a
big ovals that actually with plenty of parking and will
not be the conflict with the surrounded places. I've been
to a couple of them, and there are one something
in one Gouri which is absolutely fantastic, really big ovels
and there's a very bage too far away from it
to create a conflict lakeside drive.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
But are they getting fined as well when they park
on the grass illegal?
Speaker 3 (03:57):
It's come on, well, I'm sorry, if there is a law,
I can't tell First of all, as an elected member, nobody,
nobody can tell them that because we'll find ourselves in
serious trouble. It's an operational matter. But again, we're not
just finding people because we just feel like finding people.
The people are finding because they're breaking the road rules,
which actually clearly described it. You know, legally speaking, you
(04:20):
can't even parking your verts, but we don't enforce that.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Okay, well not in that we do because I've got
the people can play.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
They want to see the kids playing the park on
the grass, and I've got the people from the other
side of the road.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Just hold on a minute, he comes to my park.
Believe somewhere else, PUK's here.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Even if they're parking on the grass, it's not actually
in anybody's yard.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
And it's not actually it is.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
Because you can create problem with vision and everything else. Now,
don't start me because I'm becaught in the middle. I'm
begod in the middle, and I'm trying to find a solution.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
But trying we don't have.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
To find one because I just think I've said it before.
I just think it is absolute BS. And I know
that for a lot of people listening to the show.
I know because they were all messaging me on Sunday
and yesterday after receiving those fines. You're talking about good
hard working family.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
They they text me the same way the people are
living around. Their next message, what are you doing the
lord mayor you're supposed to represent us, Why you let
this people park illegally? Well, the problem is I can't
tell them to park on not to park, because I'm
not allowed to unless I want to find myself in
hikak and I don't want.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
Well really though, I mean if on the grass, just
all right, let's go along because there is lots to
talk about. Lake Alexander was closed last week due to
a suspected shark sighting.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
Was there a shark idea?
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Because I think they looked for it and no shark
was found. It's usually somebody mentions, but you can't risk
if there is one, and we'll do nothing and buy
somebody or especially a kid. And I'm pretty sure it
will be talking milk fish. It's actually had who had complaints.
They were working plans about sharks in the lagoon in
the waterfront, which actually milkfish. They are quite big because
(06:00):
they're protected, they're massive and they can actually nip sometimes
not for any other reasons, just as a as a deterrent.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Go away, that's my area, and that's what happens, all right.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
So is so it's like Alexandra open now.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
I have to check out course, tell we actually drug
it and find out what's happening. We will not allow
people to go in just in case.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Fair enough, I know the councils shedding up toys on
the snap send and solve app on socials.
Speaker 4 (06:27):
What kind of things do people report most of the time.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Cont you know, broken footpaths, people parking on verges, believe
it or not, some trees that actually can post the digital public.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
The good thing with that application.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
Is actually not only you can report it, but it
geodug it so we know exactly what it is and
you can attach a photograph. And that really makes the
life of the council officers easier because when somebody talks
about dangeroustry and they have a photo, you can see
straight away and people can react very quickly.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
Apparently May was the busiest month. Any idea why that
might have been I have no idea.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
It's probably because it's the dry seism. People tend to
spend more time outside, yes, going, working and everything else
and oh look it's broken. I mean the other day
I've got to complain about the broken footpath inside and
any photograph in the CBD so are referred to the
appropriate manager.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Hey, con I know that the Australian Dolphins, the swimming
team or PaRappa they had that community open day on
the weekend.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
How did it go? From the council's perspective?
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Massive, it's really really good and obviously the swimming community
down is big and of course where do you find
an opportunity like that to have o libyits commute suburb
swimming pool. The good thing is a swimming pool and
perap it's actually final compliant so it can be used
for training and we have a lot of requests from
(07:48):
in the state people who.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Want to come here.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
That's great acclimatization or can imagine trying to actually train
this time of the year in Melbourne outside.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Well, No, we did catch up with Warren dobbson the
CEO of Entie swimming as well, to talk about that.
Last week, Corn a couple of listener questions, So I've
got one here, Katie.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
Can you ask the Lord Mayor.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
How many car sports we've lost in the Smiths in
Smith Street with the upgrades.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
About fifteen fifteen, at about fifteen because when we went
to the community, the community over one support where we
want more trees? Who in a cooler area? And of
course the community wants that. I mean who doesn't want trees?
And if you look where we put trees like a
daily street, look at the Kavanagh Street, how beautiful they look.
And we change some parking from flat or line to
(08:37):
angle and that increased the number of a car who
can accommodate in the same area. We're looking to do
the same but again already started looking different, already start
looking beautifully green and it would get even better when
the artwork goes on the ground.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Corn, another one, can you ask the Lord Mayor regarding
the Friday parking on vandal And Drive at the mosque.
This is dangerous, as this person.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
If it's bundling drive, that's not actually our area, that's
actually Northern Territory Government road. If it's within the suburban road.
We've got exactly the same problem you just mentioned before.
I've got the local people want to go to the
most to pray and you're allowed to park. The problem
you've got a massive amount of cars parking up and
down the street and the local residents go feral, and
(09:22):
the ring and says, I can't get out of my
of my driveway because it's difficult to navigate. This is
what happens when you've we've got the suburban streets we've
got and you've got something that attracts a lot of people.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
At the same time, Corn, we know as well that
at least three City of Darwin councilors have put their
hand up vying to become the next Lord mayor. They've
reportedly told the NC and US that their agenda would
most likely be back to basics, things like roads rights,
rubbish and greenery.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
What's your reaction to that approach.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Taking council back to the sixties. That's the approach and
the reason they say that, well, they haven't got a
clue what they want to do in the future and
they are canceled. Well that's a problem because they might
have the ambition, but have they got the ability. The
thing is back to basics, right kids, Goodbye to Christmas pageant.
That's not a core for ive faction for the council.
(10:11):
They want to be at No senious month, no a
fun bus, no holiday programs.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
But surely they've all agreed to all those things if
they're on council.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
Now, that's exactly.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
What I'm talking about. You've been there for four years
or two years. You talk about transparency. Where was the
motion to change the procedures? Where was the motions to
actually change the way we're doing things? And you know what,
when we've got unanimous decisions and the community reacted does
like it, and I'm here talking to your copying flag,
where are they to say, we're all voughted for.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
It, we're a gag or being suggested.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
There's no gag order.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
So they can come out and talk.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
About the elections anything they like.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
But what about when it comes to council decisions each.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Week, Well they can to speak about it. There's no gag.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
I mean, the country disuse in the open, whether there's
a order to stop still.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
I will say I was sort of surprised to read
that because I know I've had Mick Palmer on the
show at different times to talk about different things, same
as Ed Smelsh.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
So I do know that I've.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
Been able to have counselors on the show at different times,
same as Sam Weston. He's been on as well on
numerous occasions.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
God, well, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
I don't know exactly.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
Let's let's let's get serious guys. If you had got
the plan for the future, that's fine with me. Just
admit it. I've got the plan. It's been public. My
plan starts from actually plan more trees, to upgrade the
Nightcliff swimming pool, make sure that they're not charges in
the tip, and talk to the with the governments, both
governments to establish a new Karama.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
And n Look, we will no doubt catch up with
all of the manoral candidates as it gets closer, so
we'll stick to the day to day stuff.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
Thank you is always good to catch.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
Up with you this morning.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Thank you very much. Geddy
