Speaker 1 (00:00):
A man's been arrested and charged over an indecent assault
on a woman while she was asleep in her home
in Perrap last week. It is alleged that the man
broke into her apartment, with the woman waking up to
a naked man on top of her on Tuesday night.
Police arrested a twenty nine year old man at a
home in lud Miller on Friday who's now facing multiple charges.

(00:22):
And joining us in the studio to tell us more
is Detective Senior Sergeant Toby Wilson. Good morning to.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
You, Toby, Good morning, good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Listen, thank you so much for your time this morning,
tell us about the incident. In the incident, first off,
and how did the man get into this woman's home?

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Sure so. At about eleven forty pm on the tenth
of June, Non Territory Police received a call from a
female in relation to a law ful entry and indecent assault.
So what's occurred on the allegation is that a male

(01:01):
offender has entered by climbing over a first floor railing.
He's then approached a sliding door which was closed but
was unlocked, and upon entering his entered the bedroom of
the female victim. He's removed his clothing and she's a
woke to him being naked on top of her. She

(01:24):
has wrestled the man off the bed and has very
bravely fended him off. He has then walked away and
put on a pair of dark shorts, and he's taken
a bag containing some personal property, including a camera, and
then he's left the unit.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
It's just horrifying stuff. I mean, it's the type of
thing that nightmares are made of. This poor woman god
an experience. Was she at home alone when that unfollowed?

Speaker 2 (01:51):
She was, Yeah, she was at home alone on that evening,
So yeah, it terrifying for her.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
In this sentence, how is she doing?

Speaker 2 (02:00):
She's doing better, Like I said, she's been very brave
through the sincient This is horrifying for anyone to experience.
Obviously assured that the offender's being captured.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
Detective Singer, Sergeant, talk me through how you caught this bloke.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Sure. So, the detectives from the Sex Schrimes Unit, working
in cooperation with Strike Force, Trident, CCTV operators, and our
forensics and other police units work cooperatively. We used a
range of different sources of evidence. Forensics CCTV and witness

(02:40):
victim statement of the information. So it was really a
collaborative effort leading to the arrest of this male.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Can you talk me through that arrest? Where did you
find him?

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Yes? So he was arrested at a house at lud Miller.
Police had made inquiries late last week at that same
address after adding some stolen property that was linked to
the offending, and following further investigations were able to confirm
the identification of an offender, leading to his arrest.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
What's he been charged with?

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Sure, so he was arrested. He was charged with offenses
of burglary, gross indecency and theft and indecent act.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
And do we know if he was on bail or
anything at this at that point in time of offending.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
I can't confirm from that fear right now.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Okay, in terms of he's fronting court today, is that right? Well? Look,
you know, well done to the police on being able
to apprehend him quickly, because I know women around the
Northern Territory were worried, quite concerned, particularly you know, after
hearing about how he's gotten into that home and what
he's done to that woman. It was horrifying Unfortunately, there

(03:55):
was also a second indecent assault the day after this
one occurred. We are investigations out with that. Do we
believe it's the same offender.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Yeah, so investigations are still ongoing with that matter in Larakia.
And yeah, that was on the eleventh of June. So
we do not believe it's the same offender. There were
some similarities between the the what we would call the
motus operanded, the way the offense was conducted, and the

(04:26):
other offense, and there were some similarities between the descriptions,
but we from an early stage had some questions as
to whether it was the same offender, and there some
suggestions about the descriptions and other information indicady it might be.
We are now able to confidently say that it is
not the same offender.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
So he's still on the loose at this point.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Yeah, that's right. We do have persons of interest that
we're working towards confirming.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Yeah, and so at this point in time, you know,
to all the women listening this morning, you know, I
do like it's all we're always encouraged to remain vigilant,
but are you concerned that this person that in this
second incident could target other women.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
Look that that is always a concern. So again I'm
quite cautious in my wording here about our emphasis is
on the actions of the offender. Here at all times
territories need to be mindful of their security practices, so
just the simple things of making their locks, of functioning,

(05:35):
checking their locks before they go to bed, having other
options like your CCTV and knowing your neighbors and things
like that. So just to continue those practices.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
All right, but really to you know, to try to
set the community's mind at ease. Police are absolutely, I
would imagine investigating with vigor to try.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
And catch these like So we've had numerous extra resources
on all through the weekend from various sections from Thursday,
they were continuing last night till late at night, saturating
the area and conducting further efforts, proactive efforts to trying

(06:15):
to identify persons of interest as well as the actual
investigation side, which again we're working diligently with our forensics
section and our other areas and the public and the community.

Speaker 1 (06:27):
So was that like additional patrols and that kind of
thing over the weekend. Are you able to give us
a description of this man? Just to those out there
listening this morning.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Sure, So one point I'd like to clarify about that.
So I did provide it descriptions through media at Let's
last week, and there was mentioned of a balaklava, that
he was wearing a ballet clava. Now it may have
been bal wearing a balaclava, but we'd like to consider

(06:59):
that he may be have been wearing a dark hat,
cap or similar. So sometimes in the stress of a
moment and being dark and at night and all these factors,
sometimes accounts can vary somewhat. And again I'm not saying
that eliminating that the persons wearing this, but has also

(07:21):
a likelihood he may have been wearing something dark over
his head or a or a cap. Apart from that,
a tall male. Initial description was about one hundred and
ninety centimeters, so that's tall, very tall, slim build, and
wearing dark clothing, dark top, long sleeve top and.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Trousers and quite clean cush.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Yeah, yeah, so that was that was also yea.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
All right, So if anybody's got any information, like if
they might have seen somebody suspicious in the area or
meat or matching that description, get in contact with the police.
One three, one, triple four.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Yeah, that's right, all crime stoppers on one day, one
hundred triples three, triple zero.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
Well, Detective Senior Sergeant Toby Wilson really appreciate your time
this morning. Thank you so much for joining us in
the studio and I hope you're able to get your
hands on him sooner rather than later.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
Thanks very much, Thank you,
