Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now we know that a man's facing serious charges after
allegedly assaulting his partner to the point that she lost consciousness.
Emergency Services responded to reports that a man was physically
assaulting a woman on dick Ward Driving Coconut Grove on
Saturday afternoon. Now, witnesses came to the woman's aid before
she was taken to hospital with the forty two year

(00:21):
old man arrested at the scene. Joining me in the
studio is Domestic Violence Investigation Unit Detective Senior Sergeant Kara
a Hen. Good morning to you, Kara, Good morning, Katie,
thank you so much for your time. Now, what's alleged
to have happened in this incident.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
So, Katie, A man's alleged to have physically assaulted his
partner in a public place in the vicinity of dick
Ward Drive on Saturday afternoon, and as part of that assault,
he's alleged to have choked his partner to the point
that she became unconscious.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Goodness may and people obviously do people witness this?

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yes, So they were bystanders in the area that did
provide aid to this victim, and we would like to
thank them for the help that they gave. And just
generally thanking the public for the help that they have
been giving two people in public places. I would also
like to call out for anybody who hasn't yet spoken
to police, who does have knowledge of that incident, to
give us a call at a time that suits them.
They can give us a ring on one three to

(01:17):
one triple four to report that car.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
It sounds particularly you know, it's like it's particularly violent,
allegedly choking your partner to the point where they lose consciousness,
and I would imagine pretty confronting for everybody that witnessed
it as well.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yep, Katie, violence has no place in our community, and
especially in public, well not especially, but anywhere anywhere. And
if it's not something that you're it's in your normal
day to day, it's not your job description, you're not
used to seeing these things. It is really confronting for
people when these things happen. So we do you know
those people that did render aid to this lady and

(01:55):
stay to help and ring triple zero, we really like
to thank them, and we like to courage the public
to continue calling police if they do see things like
this happening.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
As you've touched on obviously, they helped out before Saint
John then arrived. I mean, did they have to like,
did they have to do CPR on this woman.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
No, CPR wasn't required, but they did provide help to
her and kept her calm until Sint John got there
and other emergency services.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Do you know how she's doing?

Speaker 2 (02:25):
She is viral reports. We've been in contact with her
and she's doing well all things considered, and she's receiving
support from DV support services in the Greater Dayne area.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
That is good. Good to hear. Now where exactly you
know where did then the alleged defender. Did you guys
get there and managed to apprehend him pretty quickly?

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Certainly, Katie So police arrived quite shortly after receiving this report.
I can't give you the exact time, but the offender
was arrested at the scene. He has been to court
for his first mention. He's been reminded in custody for
a future hearing date or next mention.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
And he's he's been charged with the number of offenses
hasn't No, he has.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
So he's been charged with aggravated assault. There is a
specific offense for choking, strangling, or suffocating because it is
such a high risk behavior, especially in the DV setting,
and he's further been charged with intent to cause serious
harm or causing harm.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
I mean in terms of their domestic violence victims. Now,
I know that a lot of them, you know, they
like some of them, may know what to do in
these situations. But you know, to anybody out there listening
this morning that may be a domestic violence victim, what
is their first point of court? What should they do?

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Sure, Katie, thank you for the question. It's such a
hard thing for domestic violence victims to make that first
contact when they're ready to talk about what's happening for them. Yeah,
So I sort of think about this into two streams.
If there is emergency crisis violence happening to a person,
a must ring triple zero. So if they are at
immediate harm and someone is at risk of or receiving

(03:56):
harm from a violent act, their must ring triple zero.
The next point of call in a non emergency for
police is one three to one triple four. And then
if they're not comfortable in starting off with police, there
are numerous service providers around across the Greater Darwin area.
There are a list available online. And then there's national
support services as well, such as one eight hundred Respect

(04:18):
or Lifeline that they can start with.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
And I mean, Cara, I would imagine that you guys
at our Northern Territory Police particularly are domestic Violence Investigation unit.
You guys are really busy, right.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
We are really busy. Kdie Unfortunately. It is sad, but
domestic violence is a it's a whole of community problem.
It doesn't discriminate. It's happening behind closed doors and in
public places. We do thank the public who do intervene
when it's appropriate, and they're supporting friends and family to
make reports of domestic violence when it's time. But we

(04:51):
just ask if you do see something, say something. You
might be driving past something, you might see something while
you're walking around. You might think, hey, someone else will
have called Triple zero already. We'd rather get five or
six calls about something, can know where the help is
needed than get none.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Yeah. Well, and that's a really good point to make
because I think sometimes you may see something happening in
the straight or in a park or wherever, yeah, and think, okay,
someone else is called, and but you know, sometimes they
have it. So I guess make sure that you do
indeed call then authern Territory Police if you see something unfolding.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Yeap, and please do, and it's it's safe for you
to call Triple zero. They're going to ask you for
some really basic information. And we would rather receive that
information numerous times and know where the help is needed
than not receive it at all.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
And the other point that you made there that I
think is an incredibly important one is quite often, you know,
people think, oh, well, you know, you might see something
happening in the street or whatever. But you know, domestic
violence happens in environments that you may not think it's
happening in that environment. You might not realize that a
woman needs that support or that a family needs that support.

(05:57):
But you know, if you do see or hear something
thing happening, it is really important to contact the police.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
It is Katie, And there's actually there are some obligations
and for people in the Northern Territory under legislation for
manature reporting of domestic violence. And you know, we do
encourage anyone who believes that they have information or they
suspect that someone is at risk of harm as a
result of domestic violence to report that and there are
some non traditional means too, if we don't forget about

(06:26):
every day your GP, if you're talking to them, or
if you're involved with other service providers like they also
have some obligations to report on your behalf. So there's
lots of avenues to get those reports to us.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
I know there was another serious incident where a woman
was allegedly physically and sexually assaulted by man in Nightcliffe.
This was last Thursday night. Yes, what's alleged to have
happened here?

Speaker 2 (06:48):
So, Katie, last Thursday night, a male is alleged to
have physically and sexually assaulted a female on near the
intersection of Dick Wad Drive and Progress Drive. They're not
known to each other. Some bystanders intervened and he was
arrested at the scene by police when they arrived. But

(07:09):
again we're still calling for anyone who may have any
information about that, if you witness that incident or you
have dashcam footage from around that time. There is a
media release that's gone out with a evidence portal that
you can upload that to.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
Okay, and so that happened like right at an intersection.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
Yes, yep, Katie, it was ten o'clock at night, so
it was dark, but yeah, it happened sort of right
near the roadway, yep.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
And so anyone with information please get in contact with
the Northern Territory Police. Do you think there were a
number of witnesses or do police sort of know?

Speaker 2 (07:42):
Some witnesses have come forward and there were some bystanders
that rendered aid at the time, and again we thank
those people for intervening and providing assistance. We do believe
that there may still be some yet to be identified
people that may have information to assist with that investigation,
and we encourage them to come forward.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
And Kara, do we know if the man and women
were known to one another?

Speaker 2 (08:01):
They were not known to Oh.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
Goodness, may so. So just to sort of repeat this,
so this bloke, he hasn't been apprehended yet or he
has He has.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Been, he's been apprehended, charged and been reminded.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
Sorry, my mistake. So he has that is good. I'm
very pleased to hear that he's off the street. But
police do indeed still anyone with information is being urged
to come forward, yes please, yeah, Well, Cara, I really
appreciate your time this morning. Thank you very much for
joining us in the studio and uh and yeah, I've
no doubt we'll probably talk again sometime in the near future.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Thank you, Thanks Katie,
