Speaker 1 (00:00):
Lady Wolf covering the issues that affect you every day
and only on Mix one O four point nine.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
It is just fifteen minutes away from eleven o'clock. If
you've just joined us this morning, we are meeting the
candidates of Fanny Bay and joining us live on the
line right now is the Greens candidate.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
Suki Duras Walker. Good morning to you, Suki.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Hi Katie.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Now I just want to check.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Am I pronouncing your name correctly before we before we
move on.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
It's close up, Sicky Doris Walker.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Oh, thank you, Suki. I'll make sure I get it
right from this point. Now, you've got seven minutes forty.
We've got that little bit of extra time because we've
had so many listener questions come through.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
So are you ready to get started?

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Let's go all right, Suki? Why did you decide to
put your hand up to run?

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Katy?

Speaker 1 (00:48):
I'm running because I absolutely love this community. I feel
so incredibly lucky to bring my two little girls up
here in Darwin. But like many people, Katie, I'm feeling
really let down by the two major parties and people
all around me are switching off from politics, like we're
not seeing our voices being raised by our representatives, and
it's because they're putting big corporations first in our community last.

(01:10):
So I guess I'm running because I want to show
people that we don't have to put up with that.
And I'm running because i want to put the community
back front and center of our politics.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
So Ki, in terms of your jobs and work that
you've done within the community, talk us through some of
that and how you think that that best places you
to win this role.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
I've been a public school teacher for a decade. I've
taught in Alice Springs, in Arnhem and in Darwin. I've
been a union organizer and in everything that I do, Katie,
I work extremely hard. I am someone of great integrity
and I lead and motivate people to create change. And
that's been a classic example of this is the campaign

(01:50):
that I've run in Fanny Bay. My campaign has been
the biggest campaign the territory's ever seen from the Greens.
I've motivated over one hundred volunteers who've come out all
knocking with me every night, who are at the markets
with me, and it's because I've made people see that
change is possible in Fanny Bay and people who've not
actually got interested in politics, have come and joined me

(02:11):
on the doors. It's been amazing and I have that
ability to lead people and motivate people for change. And finally,
one more thing is that I'm a member of the
nt Greens and a key thing about us that's different
from the two major parties is that we don't take
corporate donations, so we're not on the dime of Tambourine
or tab Corp. We are there to represent the people
rather than big corporations.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
Now, based on those discussions that you and the volunteers
are having out on the doors and at the markets,
what are people telling you are the biggest issues in
the electros. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
So I've been, as I said, door knocking. I've done
the electrics three times now I'm on my fourth lap.
I've spoken to fifteen hundred people. I've almost worn a
hole in my shoes in all this walking. But the
issues that have come up are crime and community safety.
That's a massive one for people and they want to
see something that works. So they want to see smart
solutions to crime, actually addressing the issues that causing crime

(03:04):
in the first place. Secondly, city people are so disillusioned
with our politics and They desperately want to see some
integrity back in Parliament. They're tired of not seeing themselves
reflected or represented in Parliament, so they're really keen to
see that. Cost of living has been a really big one,
housing affordability, groceries skyrocketing. And finally, obviously the environment is

(03:28):
another big one that's coming up, the threats to the
territory lifestyle. People love hunting, fishing, camping, and that's been
put under threat because our environment is not being properly
looked after. And finally, just a couple of little local
issues I wanted to raise that have come up a lot,
and I think they're really great ideas for the community
of Fanny Bay. People talk to me about community gardens.

(03:49):
They'd love to be able to connect together and grow
food together. They'd like to see more trees along places
like Rossmith Avenue. In the middle of the day, that
place is scorching. It doesn't feel like a nice to
be moving around. And Baggett Road has come up so
much in lud Miller. People feel that it's a really
unsafe place for pedestrians, for cyclists and for public transport users.

(04:10):
You often see people just running across six lanes of traffic.
So because that's come up so much, I've started a
petition to fix Bagot Road and you can sign it
if you go on to my website.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Suki a few listener questions, so I've got one here
from Michael, and I've put this to the other candidates
as well. Will you continue the TPS security in the
Perrap area if elected?

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (04:32):
I mean this question coming up shows that Labor has
absolutely failed on community safety, doesn't it. Because this is
a band aid solution. Because we're just moving this issue,
the issues that we're seeing at the crapshops, onto another
neighborhood or another street. We're not actually addressing the root
causes of why people why we're seeing these social issues
on our streets. We have the highest rates of domestic

(04:53):
violence in the country, and we have the highest rates
of homelessness, and so no private security guard is going
to fix that problem. So we really need to be
looking at that. And I'm very concerned also that some
of these private security guards, unfortunately don't always have the
training and support to do the job of keeping everyone safe.
And we've seen a number of Four Corners episodes, for
example in late last year, which highlighted some pretty troubling

(05:16):
behavior around manhandling people and pushing them to the ground.
And so what I think, you know, the best place,
the way we can use money better in our community
is to be looking at why are these issues happening
in the first place. Let's not put the ambulance to
the bottom of the cliff. Let's try and fix the
issues that are causing crime in the first place.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
Sugain Another listener, one this time from suit Ast. An
issue with residents, particularly those of the gardens, is the
resioning of the community purpose land for private development. Now,
I've been saying the pint club because that was what
was in the email, but it's a buff club adjoining
the George Brown Botanic Gardens.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
What's your views on that issue?

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Absolutely, I've spoken to a number of people involved in
that group, that community group that are pushing back against
this development, and I really want to acknowledge the incredibly
hard work of what they're doing. They are advocating for
their community and they've done so for many, many years.
And this is a clear example, Katie, of the interests
of a big property developer being put ahead of those
of the community. And this is happening way too often.

(06:16):
Community purpose land should not be rezoned for the profit
of individuals, and like I said, this community group has
fought for so long against a well resourced developer, and
the sad thing is is that it's their own representatives
that have put them in this position. So because both
major parties take donations from property developers and other big corporations,
they are putting the interests of the community last and

(06:38):
big property developers first. And that's why the Greens are
the best place to deal with issues like this. I
want to be a voice for this community group in
our parliament. I want to ban corporate donations so that
we can have representatives that are representing the community and
not big corporations. It's so important and this community group
has suffered the consequences of that massively.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
Soki, we're on six minute, it's fifteen. Still a couple
of questions.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Saint Hinnie's moving to Coconut Grove, do you support it?

Speaker 1 (07:05):
Yeah, I've heard again door knocking this area. It's a
huge concern and it's unfortunate that people have not been
properly consulted. There's also a lot of confusion about what's happening.
Like I spoke to one person who thought it had
already been up and running for three months. I spoke
to someone who had no idea how long it was
going to be there for or what its role was.
And this is a huge failure of leadership of the

(07:25):
Labor Party. You know, we need services like this if
we're going to be serious about addressing the social issues
like homelessness. And when they're properly resourced and staffed and
well integrated into a community, they can work really well.
But for that to happen, we need really bold leadership
to make it work, and we certainly don't have that
at the moment.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Suki, you've got forty seconds tell us why you're the
best person for the role and why should people vote
for you.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
So it is time for a shakeup in our politics.
We can't keep voting for the same two parties expecting
different results. I have done the work to be to
so many people in Fanny Bay. I am someone of
courage and conviction who is not afraid to stand up
for what the community needs. And this election, the seat
of Fanny Bay will come down to a few hundred
votes in Fanny Bay. We can get our first Green

(08:14):
into Territory Parliament and we can get big corporations out
of politics and make history. So this election, vote one
for Cicky Doris Walker.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
So gi time is up.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
But I do have to ask because a lot of
people are messaging through asking this question, and I know
that you'll say that Territorians get to decide their preferences themselves,
but you are still going to have to determine whether
your preferences are going to go.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
To the COLP or the ALP. Which way are they
going to go?

Speaker 1 (08:42):
So Firstie, I really want to say, I am not
running this race in Fanny Bay to help anyone win.
I'm running to win myself and I think it is
absolutely possible. And I know you've already told you listeners,
but it's a really good reminder. Your preferences are yours
to give, but we do issue advice and on know
how to vote card. What we've said is that we've
put a strong independent as our second preference. He's a

(09:03):
Larakia man, Leonard May, who's been strong on issues like
lead point. We've put Labor third, and we've put the
COLP force.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
Suki Doris Walker lovely to speak to you this morning
I appreciate your time.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
Thanks Katie, thank you.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
It is just on seven minutes away from eleven o'clock.
