Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining me on the line right now, let me make
sure I've got things organized. We have got the independent
running for the Seed of Nightcliff, Malilma May. Good morning
to you, Malilma.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Morning Katie, and morning to all the listeners.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Now, I do apologize. I think I was pronouncing your
name wrong to begin with. So I hope I've got
it right now, do I?
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Yes, you've nailed it.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Thank you, awesome, thank you. Now, Malilma, you've got seven
minutes and a number of questions to get through. Are
you ready?
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Yes, I am.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Let's do us now, Malilma. Why did you decide to
put your hand up to run for the Seed of Nightcliff?
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Well, because I partook in the kitchen table conversations by
voices of the top end, and I really loved that
process of hearing from the community. And I heard that
the community didn't feel represented by the current member. And
I feel that the values the community put forward are
the values that I represent.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Now, why do you think that you're the best person
for the role based on your previous six experience in
the community and maybe through the work that you do.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Yeah, great question. I Well, first of all, I'm a
local Darwin woman, and this is my grandmother's countries, so
I feel like they have a great connection to the place.
And secondly, I've worked across corporate legal firms, Aboriginal community
legal services. I've worked in climate advocacy and also with
(01:25):
federal politicians to coordinate and consult about policy that's affecting territoriums.
So I have a broad range of experience across many
different sectors that I think makes me a really great candidate.
And also thirdly that I love to listen to the community.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Lililma, what do you see as being the biggest issues
in the electorate.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yeah, definitely safety and security first and foremost, the cost
of living from from talking to people door knocking, hearing
that they have grave concerns surround the economy and affordability,
and also action on climate. So the constituents want a
safe and thriving community, they want small businesses to thrive,
(02:11):
and they want action on climate.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
And based on what you are hearing that on the
doors and those issues that you've just raised, why do
you think you'd be the best person to try and
help them sort through them?
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Well, first and foremost, that I have been on the
doors and that I have been meeting with constituents and
from doing the door knocking, I'm hearing that people are
really moved and feel really appreciated that I'm making the
time to get out and talk to them and listen
to them. And from what I'm hearing, the community wants
local people, and they don't want career politicians. They want
(02:45):
people with life experience and also people who have felt
othered by this government system and who haven't felt like
politics is for them. And I've felt like that in
my own life. So I think that makes me a
really great candidate.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
Now, can I ask you do you support on shore
gas development.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
I do not support onshore gas development. I support thriving
small businesses, and I support renewable energy.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
Now, then, one of the other issues that has been
raised with us, and I know it's not actually in Nightcliff,
but it is in Coconut Grove, and that is the
moving of Saint Vinnie's to Coconut Grove. Is that something
that you support.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
I think we need to hear from the community and
also hear from the social services about that. Saint Vinnie's
and other social services do an incredible job to support
more vulnerable members of our community, and so I think
that needs to be a conversation that's more fleshed out
before I can make a comment on that, Malilma.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
When it comes to you know, the issue of you
said safety and security, We've spoken to the other candidates
about some of those issues around crime and anti social behavior.
What do you think or what work do you think
might need to happen in Cliff in that space.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Well, from talking to the community and also from talking
to experts in the field, the community and experts alike
both want a redistribution of funding into social and community organizations,
and they believe that focusing on restorative justice practices and
focusing on relationship building is going to be the best
(04:23):
not only for the young people, but also for small
businesses and for the security of constituents in Nightcliffe.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Melilima, in terms of your preferences, have you decided how
they're going to go?
Speaker 2 (04:36):
I haven't yet. I have to wait to hear all
the nominations that will be released on the eighth of August.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
Now, why should people vote for you.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Well, they should vote for me if they feel like
their values and my values align, and if they also
want an independent candidate who is outside of party politics
and if they want to see their community the protect
to be safe and thriving.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Malilma's still a little bit of time left. Is there
anything else that you'd like to add.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
I just want to say thank you to all the
constituents who have supported me, and thank you to the
people who've spoken with me on the doors and at
the market. The community of Nightcliff is really intelligent and
capable and it's been such an honor to get to
know everyone well.
