Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, I love hearing about young people doing incredibly good
at different things around the place, and anti equestrian juniors
have ridden to glory at the recent national competition. So
the Australian Into School Championships were held late last month.
They bring together school aged riders from across the country
to complete in dressage, show jumping and combined training. We

(00:23):
had a talented team of nine Territorians. Well they made
the eight thousand kilometer round trip to Sydney to take
part in the event and they have certainly done the
Northern Territory proud. Now joining me on the line is
committee member Amanda Howe. Good morning to your Amanda.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Good morning Katie Hey.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Lovely to hear from you, and so wonderful to hear
how well these wonderful kids have done. How many juniors
ended up going, So we.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Had a team of ten, but one proked their arm
at the last minute, so we took nine riders. They
were aged nine to eighteen years of age.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
How wonderful. Now tell me a little bit about who
went and and you know how well they did yep.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
So our captains were Rhianna Williamson and Kaya Murrahey, and
then we had Our team was made up Lane, Martin,
Brook Huppets, Mayer Purdon, Hailey Richter, Imogen Kadso, Bailey Howie
and little Toby Campbell.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Now, how difficult was it to coordinate getting these wonderful
young people committee members? I mean, like yourself, I'm assuming
they need the few adult chaperones, but also getting your
horses and everything to Sydney.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
Yeah, it was a big effort. So a lot of
the time some of our kids used pool horses, obviously
just because the sheer fact of the distance, the travel
and the cost. But this year three of three of
our writers were from nt with the eight thousand kilometer

(02:02):
round trip. We also had some boarding school kids so
they are a little bit closer. So yeah, just three
pool horses this year. But it was great to see
our kids do so well on their own mounts.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Now, I know eleven year old Bailey how your daughter
was one of the standouts. Talk me through her achievements.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah, so this is Bailey's third year. It's been a
great learning curve. But we decided to take her two
horses this year that she'd qualified, and we dragged dad
from the farm and set off a month early. And yeah,
just it was an amazing trip. The people we met

(02:45):
just lifelong friends. Now. Yeah, so yeah, it's a lot
of dedication Katie, as you can imagine, everyone sacrifices to
get the kids to qualify. Yeah, but yeah, it was
really amazing. And well we can't really thank a question
in Northern Territory enough just for their ongoing support for

(03:05):
our junior writers. Yeah, and yeah, the sponsors, the community
just helping out to get our writers there. Yeah, anyone
who purchased an auction item, like all those little things
help get our riders. Yeah, big costs, Well.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
It would be a huge cost. And it's a team effort,
like such a huge team effort, you know, and so
much like you know, parents do so much to be
able to make sure that their kids are able to
have an opportunity like this as well. So you must
be really proud.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Oh yeah, we are so proud. Yeah, it kind of
didn't really sink in, I think till halfway home and
I remember saying to Bally, you actually realize what you've accomplished,
Like you may never accomplish this, we can And she
turned around and said, Mum, it's not the Olympics, And
I was like Okay.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
I love kids.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Yeah, And I think the best thing Katie was it
was the compliments that we received on a daily basis,
Like from the judges, the Stewarts, organizers, coaches, are the
writers about our little NT team, like their sportsmanship, the
courtesy they showed. Yeah, like we were a little team,
but we were such a mighty team. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
I love that. Hey, is Bailey there? Did you want
to have a talk to me?

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Yes? I will put her on.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
I'd love to speak to her, Bailey, can you hear me? Hey, Katie, Hey,
how did you go while you're away?

Speaker 3 (04:33):
Very good?

Speaker 1 (04:34):
Actually tell me a little bit about what you took
part in and the categories and you know what that
means to non Harsey people like me who might not understand.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
So I got first a shouting champion in the eighty
primary show jumping, and I got fifth in the nine
key Cinematis show jumping, six in prelim dressage overall equal
fifth sorry, third in eighty centimes combined training yep, and

(05:15):
sixth place Rivens.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Yeah, holy moly, Bailey winning first at the Australian Into
School Championships. That is massive. I know you're told, mum,
it's not the Olympics, but you might be on your
way if you train hard enough.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
What did it feel like when you, you know, when
you were presented then with I'm assuming it's a medal
or a beautiful ribbon or something that you receive when
you do place.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
Yeah, it is a ribbon and it feels really good.
It makes me really happy.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
I bet it does. How much training and how much
effort do you put into your sport?

Speaker 3 (05:55):
Well, because I have to do school, you sud I
wake up at five thirty in the morning and ride
my horse because I still have to do jobs in
the farm, so I put in a lot of effort
five point.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
Thirty in the morning. That's awesome. You sound like you
are very dedicated and that you know that you do
a tremendous job in juggling everything including school.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Hey, what was it like to go away with your
friends as well and to be part of a little
territory team that did so good.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
Yeah. I made a lot of friends. I have some
from Wa Victoria, Tasman in yourself West and they were
all very nice.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Yep.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
And I really like being in the NT team because
it's really small. When everyone supports each other and everyone's
there to watch you. So it's actually really good.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
That's so nice. Hey, Bailey, when you're away at the
at the championships, do you guys do do you swap
anything with the other team? So I know when I've
gone away with Northern Territory teams with my kids that
then they sometimes swap like little peas and stuff, and
everybody wants the Northern Territory stuff because it's so hard
to get.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Yeah, most people want our shirts and our hats.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
Did you swap any of your stuff?

Speaker 2 (07:14):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (07:15):
I actually did. I swapped a lot. Oh.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
Well, this is the thing you've got bargaining power right
when you've got when you've got such a small Northern
Territory team, because everybody wants your stuff.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Now, before I talked to mom again, tell me how
much fun was it? And are you hoping that you
get to go away again next year? Are you already training?

Speaker 3 (07:38):
Yes, I'm already training, and I really want to go
get away again next year and maybe take my houses again. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
Oh, and Bailey, was it really like did it make
a big difference having your horses with you? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (07:54):
It was a really good experience on them because they
went and saw new things. A lot of people even wanted
to steal my horses.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
They must need good ones.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
Now, oh Bailey, it's so nice talking to you this morning.
Biggest congratulations. The whole of the Northern Territory should be
so proud of you and so proud of the rest
of your team.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
Thank you, Katie, no worries.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
Hey, can you put your mum back on for me?

Speaker 3 (08:23):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (08:23):
Bye?

Speaker 1 (08:24):
Thanks Bailey. Oh, Amanda Little she's a little treasure. How good.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
I know everyone said that on our trip, quite happy
to kidnap her.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
She sounds like a little legend, as all of the
young people were that went away. And I just think
it's wonderful to see our territory kids, you know, and
teenagers doing so well, particularly on a national stage. What's
next for our talented territory riders.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
A little bit of a brain. It's quite warm since
we've come home. Yeah, they'll just go back into their
training Darwin show jumping and the dressage like they're so good, Katie.
They bring up like amazing coaches and whole clinics all
year round for our kids and and we do really
need to thank them a lot there. Yeah, they're elite coaches.

(09:19):
The coaches we had, Wendy Barker, Paul Williams, like Paul
Son's been to the Olympics. So I mean, if we
can just keep giving our kids every opportunity that goes
down south, git like yeah, Like they've proved that they're
just as good as riders and they've probably got a
bit more grit. I reckon.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
Oh well, it's so nice to talk to you this morning.
It's so wonderful to talk to Bailey as well, and
to hear about the achievements of our territory youngsters. They
are incredible. Thank you so much for having a chat
with us this morning.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
Thank you Katie for having us anytime.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
Thanks Amanda,
