Speaker 1 (00:00):
On the line with us right now to continue today's
discussions where we have got me candidate and Julie Palmer.
Good morning to you.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Good morning Katie.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
Lovely to have you on the show now. And Julie,
why you've got about six minutes and a series of
questions to get through? Are you ready to get started?

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Go for it?

Speaker 1 (00:23):
All right?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Likes best, but just let let me let you know
and let your listeners know. I've got really sore throught,
So no, I don't I'm not diseased or anything like that. Anything. No,
that's yea every now and then, yep, that's all right.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Well if you need a cough, that is I okay. Now, Julie,
why did you decide to put your hand up to
be the next mayor of Catherine.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Because I'm invested in this community, Katy. So when our
GP services collapsed in twenty twenty, I stepped in and
bought everything I had, my skills, my heart, my entire
life savings into establishing and building in Bohemia Health. It's
been going great guns providing a service to the community.

(01:07):
I see Katherine as my forever home. I have put
off my hand to stand for counsel because one of
the things through life when you life has taught me
is when you see something that you love, you don't
walk away even when things are going awry. And Catherine
has been through several ups and downs recently, and one

(01:30):
of the things I absolutely want to do is bring
my skills to the table, my understanding of local government
and how government works to make this a really, really
lovely place. I mean it already is, but there's so
much more we can do, and so much more we
can do when we work together and commit to making

(01:52):
a difference and making a change now.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
And Julie, what qualifications and work experience do you have
which you do you think make you best placed for
the position of me.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
So, I'm a scientist by training. I've been in Australia
for about forty years now. I'm a scientist by training,
kind of systems thinker. I've had management in the public,
private and non government sectors in Australia. I was a
member of a large team that developed and consulted on
the current AMPTY Local Government Act twenty nineteen. I know

(02:25):
how the system works and I know the importance of
working together because you cannot make it, make any change
if you just are a sow a warrior. I'm not that.
I'm someone who believes in strengths based practice, in bringing
people's skills to the table and growing that skill and
benefiting that for everyone. So I've done community development work.

(02:50):
I've worked at high levels of government. I've bought people
around the table together and negotiated outcomes for communities and
for government apartments. I firmly believe in the collaboration that
can build stronger communities.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Julie, what do you see as the most important issues
to sort through the council?

Speaker 2 (03:18):
If you follow social media, it's everything. But you know,
apart from that, from my point of view, I think
one of the things that we absolutely need to do.
Mayor Lee's Clark, who's the retiring mayor, put up this
amazing list of achievements on the Catron Town Council's page
yesterday and it's really important that every member of the

(03:42):
community reads that post and finds out what council has
been doing for the length of her tenure. I don't
think we at Catronites and as councils sell ourselves and
sell what we are doing really well. I don't think
we in council communicating with the community and letting people

(04:03):
know exactly what's happening in a very respectful way, and
engaging the community. I really really believe in engaging the community.
So for me, the priorities would be compliance, accountability of councilors,
especially to the community, and accountability of council to the community.
The implementation of an amazing strategic plan that the community

(04:26):
has developed over several years, and making sure that the
meansful plan is aligned to that strategic plan, and an
engaged community.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
And Julie, about two minutes left, what are your top
three commitments to voters. I mean, you're sort of touched
on them there, but anything else you'd like.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
To add, right, absolutely, So we do talk about community
safety and environment sustainable environmental sustainability, understanding that council really
hasn't got a major role to play these responsibilities of
the territory and Commonwealth government. So I'd really like to

(05:04):
get involved in that conversation with the two levels, with
the other two levels of government, making sure that Catherine
has a local voice in these bigger discussions that are
happening to that impact on the community, and making sure,
I guess, from all of the conversation I've seen on

(05:27):
social media that people understand what council's role is, why
council increases rates, what needs to happen around community safety,
what role council is playing, what role community can play,
and how we might engage in an environment, in an
environment that is sustainable for future generations.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Now, in terms of have we been asking all of
our candidates, are you a member of a political party
or have you ever been?

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Absolutely not, never, have, never, will.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Now, never will no fair enough. Now you've got about
thirty seconds left. Why should people vote for you?

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Well, if people want to see a change, if people
want accountability from council, if people want someone leading Council
in a way that is productive and productive and useful
for community, then they should vote for me. I am
someone who brings a lot of skills to the table,

(06:27):
and I'm someone who understands government. If we want to
make a change, I want to work with the community
of Catherine to make that difference. I want to listen,
I want to be able to speak up, and I
want to absolutely make sure that Catherine is never ignored.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
Well and Julie Palmer, all of our women out of
Catherine today have all stuck to time as well. You
have you come in right on six minutes and one second.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
I run a general practice clinic Okati. I have to
you know how.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
To keep the time well. Only and Julie, lovely to
speak to you this morning. Thanks so much for joining
us on the show.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Thank you
