Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, we are indeed continuing our discussions with some of
the meoral candidates, and we've not been down to Catherine
yet to find out who is running. So we thought, well,
let's head on down to Catherine this morning and find
out a little bit more about some of the candidates. Now,
we don't have the chance to catch up with every
one of them today, but as I said on the
show yesterday, those that we've missed throughout the different areas
(00:23):
we are going to try and get back to over
the coming days. So certainly doing our best to try
and get through all the people who've put their hand
up for me right across the top end in our
major town centers. But joining me on the line right now,
we have got Joanna Holden who's put her hand up
for me in Catherine. Good morning to you, Joanna.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Good morning Katie.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
How are yeah? Really good? Great to have you on
the show. Now, Joanna, we've got six minutes and a
series of questions. Are you ready to get started?
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yeah? Why not?
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Let's do it all right now? Why have you decided
to put your hand up to be the mayor of Catherine.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Look, I am passionate about Catherine. She's my home. She
is just a beautiful place, and I think that she's
looking for a bit of strong leadership that listens and
acts and works with the community. I think there's what
I'm hearing is there's a bit of a disconnect between
councils and community. So I think we need to get
that back, Joanna, what connection back?
Speaker 1 (01:25):
Yeah? Now, in terms of qualifications and work experience, what
qualifications or work experience do you have would you think
make you best placed for the position.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
So I've worked across all three tiers of government, so federal, state,
and local, and in local government I did the compliance
and the business planning and also the financial management. So
I think they're important skills to have, particularly good good governance.
You know, good governance, I think is the foundations of
a good council, and so knowing the acts and the
(01:58):
by laws and the roles in the sposabilities are critical
to leading a team of counselors to get the job done.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Now, in terms of some of the issues being experienced
in Catherine that counsel deal with, what do you see
as being the most important issues for counsel to work through?
Speaker 2 (02:18):
So I think to start with, we need to So
I've been. I've spent the last couple of weeks listening
to people and there is a list of things. One
of the key issues is around rubbish, and that encompasses
a whole range of of matters such as the new
really bins, recycling, the dump hours, the tip the rubbish
(02:40):
hip shops. So I think that that is a priority
for people. I think they want the town to be
tidied up, the graffiti dealt with, the rubbish, dealt with,
you know, so putting a bit of pride back into
the community by making it look good, putting the water
onto the gardens, you know, all those sorts of things
to give people pride in their home. So I think
(03:01):
their priorities, and then I think we need to be
working any social behavior is impacting everybody. Counsel is limited
in what it can do, but we can certainly advocate
loudly and strongly on behalf of our community to have
these issues addressed.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Now, I mean you've sort of touched on on your
commitments as well throughout that question, But what would you
say are the top three commitments that you would make
if you become the mayor.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
So I'll give you a commitment that I've been making
to people on an individual level, is that my door
will be open if people want to come and talk
to me, if they've got an issue, my door is open.
I will listen. I will then investigate, you know, have
a look, find out what's happened, and I will get
back to them. So my first promise is an open door,
(03:49):
a listening, ear, and then follow up. The second one
is that I will I want to set the counsel
up for success, So I want us to be very
clear about you know, our roles and responsibility, you know
what the requirements are, so all that good governance stuff.
I think that's the second thing to set in place,
because those good foundations make for good decisions and goods,
(04:12):
you know, for achieving in the future. And then I
think the third thing I'd have to say, Look, we've
got to do something about the rubbish. I'm sick of
trash talk yep.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Is there plenty of rubbish around? Is there?
Speaker 2 (04:25):
I think there's a whole range of issues around the
rubbish people being able to access it. When they can't,
then that leads to illegal dumping, which then you know,
obviously that causes litter, and that makes the placebook untidy.
I think there's a bit of confusion around what's happening
with the new bin system. So yeah, there's a lot
(04:45):
of I think there's a lot of issues and questions
around our rubbish management here.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
Johanna, you've got about two minutes left. A question we've
been asking all of the candidates. Are you a member
of a political party or have you ever been?
Speaker 2 (04:59):
I am not a member of a political party. I
never have been, and I don't think party politics belongs
at the local level. I think local government is grassroots.
It's about representing your community and me. That's Catherine. I'm
here to fight for Catherine. I'm not here to fight
for anything else but Catherine. That's my political party. Katherine.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Now you've still got about a minute and a half left.
Why should people vote for you?
Speaker 2 (05:24):
People should vote for me because I am I've got
strong leadership skills. I intend to listen to our community.
I intend for the council to get back to that
grassroots listening and acting. And it doesn't have to be
big staff Katie. But what I'm hearing from the community
is they're not looking for big, multi million dollar projects.
They're just looking for small things that I keep going
(05:45):
back to the dump oping hour. To me, that's a
small issue and it should be an easy fix.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
Well, Joanna Holden, good to catch up with you this morning.
Good to find out a little bit more about why
you've decided to put your hand up.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
No, thank you, Katie, thank you for your time, thank
you for breat that you two
