Three Territorians competed in the Australian Strongman National Finals held
in Brisbane on the weekend, and they have done the
Territory proud.

The Territory trio all.

Came second in their relative weight divisions, a fantastic result
for the crew. Now Catherine strongman and Pugh also secured
a spot in the strong Man Games Overseas next year.
And he joins me on the line.

Good morning aunt, good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Oh great to have you on the show mate. Just
when I heard about, you know, a strong man coming
out of Catherine, I'm like, just how strong are we
talking here?

Speaker 2 (00:39):
What kind of things did you have to do?

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Oh? Yeah, took a fair bit of training a couple
of years, but thought I'll something to do something different
and yeah, just naturally strong, I guess. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Gave it a crack mate. Paint a picture for us
of the nationals.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
What kind of lives, what kind of testes of physical
strength did you actually have to do?

Speaker 3 (01:04):
So this one we had a twenty meter sled drag
which was accumulative weight, so we had to stop every
couple of meters, so they put more weight on than
The second event was the seated Viking press so we
had to sit on a bench with no back support
and do an overhead press. Then it was the conan's will,

(01:28):
which yeah, that was tough into a steinhold for as
long as we can. So we had to hold a
metal steel stin out in front of us while standing
against the wall for as long as possible, straight armed,
and a Bavarian deadlift up on a platform.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Goodness me, how heavy? Like what kind of weights are
we talking here?

Speaker 3 (01:54):
So the sled started at eighty eighty five kilos and
up ten kilos every couple of meters, so by the
end I was dragging one hundred and twenty kilos. The Viking.
The Viking press started at eighty eighty kilos and we

(02:14):
had to do one rep bring it down on the
down call that it jumped up to another ten kilos.
But yeah, unfortunately I didn't get the second rep. But
the conan's wheel was two hundred and twenty kilograms, walk
around as for as long as in a minute, as
far as far as we call made.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
I don't even know what a conan's wheel is, let
alone how hard did it be?

Speaker 3 (02:41):
So you pick it up with your four arms and
essentially it's kind of big steel and you just literally
got to walk around in a circle.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Holy only, so yeah, you keep going.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
Yeah, the steinhold was seven kilos, yeah, straight armed out
in front as long as possible. And the Bavarian deadlift
on the platform we had to lift it a meet
off the ground and that started at one hundred and
seventy five kilos, which I got up as well.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
Oh mate, how long have you been training to get
to this point? And what kind of training are you
doing every day?

Speaker 3 (03:19):
I've only been doing this for about three years and
just yes, strength training really lot in between sort of comps.
We sort of I do sort of like a maintained program,
just an all body just to keep the strength up
and thing. And then once we've met and the coach
sort of work out what next next sort of competition

(03:41):
we're looking at. Once we know the events and the waves,
we sort of do like an eight week program to
build up into Yeah, the competition.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
How did you get into it?

Speaker 1 (03:52):
All?

Speaker 3 (03:54):
A very close friend of mine. Actually he doesn't do
it no more unfortunately, But yeah, I was in a
bad spot because I did my knee. Ye And yeah,
obviously everyone who knew me, Rugby was my life ye
And yeah, he's oh, why did he come and have
a crack at this? He had all the gear at
his place because he was living down here at the time. Yeah,

(04:16):
and yeah, just loved it because it was just something different.
And I remember what I remember watching it as a
kid with dad. I'm just sitting there lost the old
videos and yeah, it's funny. So I remember saying to
my dad, I was like, I'm going to do that
one day, and here I am.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
I love that, And you know, I think it's It's
one of those tough things, right with sport, Like if
you do get injured and you can't do the sport
that you love anymore. When you're a really competitive person
like you obviously are, you do sort of go to
look for something else that you might be able to
get involved in. It sounds like you have just you know,
you've embraced it and do a fantastic job with that.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Yeah, sort of everything sort of do I give one
hundred percent in yea and yeah. I was lost lost
for a few years after rugby because I was playing
rugby league and rugby union down here and up there.
Yea and yeah, and then sort of when you get
told at twenty nine that your career is over.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Yeah, it makes it tough, there is no doubt about it.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
It was a very tough time in the.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Last and then and then you got into your strong
Man a couple of years later.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Yeah, yeah, along with the yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
Good on you tell me, like what level of training.
I know you've touched on the fact that you are
doing plenty of training, but like, how many hours are
you training for a day? How are you juggling at
all with everything with your little family?

Speaker 3 (05:44):
Well, yeah, it's a bit difficult. Usually it's about it
depends sort of around roughly an hour to two hours.
I train and I'm still in a trainer, so I'm
still at work. So I finished work anytime after four
thirty five o'clock. And we live on a block too,
so I come home and help help the wife and

(06:07):
with the little one, and usually yeah, I train once
all the jobs are done and she's in bed about seven,
so as nice there. I'm not getting into tanturfy eleven o'clock.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Oh no, well that's you know what, that's dedication.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
And tell me, mate, is it like what you know
we all imagine from those you know, different films that
we've watched over the years. Are your drinking egg whites
or egg you know, egg to get your protein up?

Speaker 2 (06:31):
What kind of diet have you got?

Speaker 3 (06:35):
Some of them are But yeah, obviously I'm in the
under ninety And it took a long from the start
to cut this weight because I was originally there one
hundred and twenty and twenty five kilos. Yeah, and I'm
now yeah, in the under just under ninety one.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Now more cut back, I suppose.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
Yeah, I've cut way back, but generally I like to
sit sort of around Yeah, a couple of kilos off
that way? Then when it because we've got a way
in twenty four hours before the competition, so once I
sort of know I'm in sort of as a call compmode,
I yeah, rare, I really watch what I eat and
drink and yeah yeah yeah yeah obviously.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
So yeah, so what's next in terms of with the
strong Man Games next year? Like this sounds like it's
going to be massive?

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Where is it? And yeah, what are you going to
have to do to get yourself prepared?

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Yeah, I've got away for the details on a couple
of people for that one. It's he was saying. It's
generally held in either England, Scotland or Ireland. I'm pretty
sure he was saying, and yes, the world natural Strongman
going so obviously yeah, no, it's all natural so no.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Yeah, none of the bad stuff, Yeah exactly.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
No, that's good, that's good.

Speaker 3 (07:55):
Yeah yeah yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
More broadly, like across the Northern Territory and many people
getting involved in the in strong Man.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
Well we've got a few, but we'd love more people
to come out and have a go. Like the top
End Strength Center in Darwin is so inclusive. It's great
for newcomers if you have got a disability or all
abilities like Justin himself. Everyone in territory knows Justin he's great.

(08:24):
My wife she has cell Paul's and she was doing
it for a bit that there. They have got a
couple of like they've got a couple there. But yeah, honestly, yeah,
the more people we can get down it would be great,
Like just how good.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
Well and I reckon it's fantastic mate. I love that
that three Territorians have competed in the Australian strong Man
and then you've you know, you have done yourself proud
and the Northern Territory proud of course being selected to
head across to the strong Man Games overseas next year.

Good on you, I reckon it's awesome.
