Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's now a fishing competition organized by a wonderful local

(00:03):
family in honor of their son who lost his battle
with brain cancer, is happening in just over a week.
Max's Cast for a Cure. It raises money for brain
cancer research and it also helps Northern Territory families grappling
with a diagnosis. The man behind the event, Lincoln Kirby,
joins me on the line. Good morning, Lincoln, morning Katie

(00:27):
here you going? Yeah, really good mate, wonderful to have
you on the show. Link to those listening this morning
who don't know about you know, Max's Cast for a
Cure and why it all started? How many years has
it been running for? Now?

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Our fourth year we're doing it, so yeah, we started
up in twenty twenty two, basically a year after we
lost Max. So yes, the fourth year. It's just getting
bigger and better every year so far. Mate.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
I went on the website yesterday and it looked like,
you know, you guys, you've gone full Profe's just about Lincoln,
you know, from there, from when it all started.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Yeah, we've had the awesome Tony Wood on board. You know,
he's help and he's definitely brought us up a level
or two. So you know it's been great. Everyone else
has chucked in and you know everyone's got behind us
and massively for the last year or two, well.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
They've gotten behind you guys, because it is you know,
it's it's such a wonderful thing to do for the community.
And it started, i know, for your family through such
a hard, hard situation, which was the loss of your
little boy, and you've been like, you've helped so many others.

(01:35):
You've done so much great work in the community since
starting Max's Cars for a Cure.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Yeah, I guess that's what it's all about. You know,
we had a big focus on, you know, trying to
raise fund for research, but we really wanted to help
you know, families in need life for what we went
through you know, five years ago as well. So we've
definitely had a fair few cases pop up in the
last year. You know, it's not as rare as what
everyone thinks it is. So it's good to be able
to hear be here and be able to help out
where we can.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Now, Lincoln, in terms of you know, what exactly is
planned for the competition, talk us through it to those
who've never taken part, but they're listening this morning, thinking, oh,
this sounds like fun. How does it all work?

Speaker 2 (02:16):
Yeah, well, it's really easy fishing competition. It's not the
biggest or the most You basically just have to catch
one of the five species to go in the drawer
to win some awesome prizes finally donated by our fantastic sponsors.
It's down at Freespirt Resort this year in Pineland, so
it's actually kicking off yeh Friday the eighth till August.
You can come down and pick up some brag mats

(02:38):
from there, and then we're having the big presentation down
there on Sunday afternoon from about one o'clock onwards.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
How have the numbers grown and how has it sort
of evolved over the last few years.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Oh, like, you know, we amount of sponsors that have
jumped on board and snowboard and you know we've sort
of averaged around four or five hundred people jumping on
board every year, which is huge. Yeah, you know, I
think totally we've raised in the next three hundred and
fifty four hundred thousand dollars over the last few years
just to family to need.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
So yeah, it's incredible. It truly has like when you
talk about, you know, those families in need and people
that you have helped over the years. I mean, you know,
name names if you're happy to, but tell us about
some of the people and some of the situations that
you know that you guys have helped out with over

(03:27):
the years as a result of the fundraising.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Yeah, well, I mean last year was little Kiali. We
sort of you know, he had to go to America
for treatment, so we were lucky we're in the position
to help him, you know, raise the funds to get
over there. And he's doing quite well by all sounds,
so you know, that's fantastic. And there's been three or
four other you know, young kids that have been diagnosed
and the families have had the you know pull up
roots and head into state for months on end of
treatment and that. So you know, we've tried to help

(03:52):
them out financially where we can, because as we know,
the bills keep coming and everything. So you know, we've
just tried to be there to support where we can.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
Well, this is a thing, you know, it's like you
know better than anybody, but it's so hard. It must
be so hard for a family. And as I said,
you know, better than anyone else. When you have a
diagnosis like that of your your beautiful child, and you're
you're battling through as best you can with that, but
then like you're touched on, you know, the bills are

(04:20):
still coming through and you're still having to deal with
your life responsibilities. So then being able to turn to
you guys.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Yeah, and I mean by just having to travel into state,
you know, you lose all your network or your support.
There's no family, you don't mean to say a lot
of the time. And you know, we can just do
some little things, you know, like food vouchers or organize something,
you know, fuel vouchers, a bit of money you ever spend,
so you know, it all helps.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
Yeah, it does. And look, I think it's a wonderful
thing that you guys are continuing to help the community
and you're doing so much in little Max's name, which
is such you know, it's so admirable from my perspective. Mate,
Tell me, how are the registration's coming along so far
for this year?

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Yeah, it's looking really great. We did I think it
was nearly two hundred and fifty three hundred registrations on
registration day, which is one of our biggest FUS yet
and just in the last week of entries have flooded in.
So we've got an amazing boat to give away this year.
You know, it's looking like it's going to be about
a sixty thousand dollar boat fitted out by the legends
that a wire my boat and be LA's put it
out with all the latest hummingbird year. So it's going

(05:26):
to be a huge draw cards. I hoping we're going
to crack five hundred this year for the registration.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
So how do you have to win the boat? You've
got to register? Is that all you've got to do?

Speaker 2 (05:34):
That's all you got to do, so you don't even
have to fish. You know, people into state anywhere can
just sign up and register. Only cost ninety dollars for
an adult or you know, two hundred dollars for a
family of four and you go in the drawer to
win a sixty thousand dollar boat just by registering.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
So mate, that is fantastic. I reckon my son would
love to win that. Maybe I'm going to have to
get my husband to jump online and register. Worth it
is now in terms of the prizes, can you tell
us about some of the prizes this time round?

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Yeah, Look, we've got awesome rainwater tank from top End storage. Again,
that's amazing. Our heaps of cool rods and reels, We've
got a big carved barreer, some awesome Luis sets. The
boat itself is going to be huge, Like this year,
the team from Wama Boat's really gone all out on
that one. So that's the massive one that we're really
looking forward to giving away.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Yeah, yeah, it is unbelievable, you know, to be giving
that boat away is going to be fantastic. Now, if
anybody's listening this morning, they're keen to get involved, they're
keen to find out more. Where's the best spot for
them to go?

Speaker 2 (06:38):
Yeah, look, jump on the web page Maxis Cars Forcure webpage.
As you said, it's had a bit of a revamp,
so jump on there. All the registration links are there. Otherwise,
our Facebook page has got heaps of info, so don't
jump on the Facebook page. Otherwise, if you don't do
Facebook or Internet, just reach out and give us a
call and we happy to help out wherever we can. Later.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
I jumped on yesterday. I was like, whoa, you guys,
look at this, it's all happening.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
Yeah, big takes the Neil for that one. He's done
a great job with the website. If you're listening to things, mate,
appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
No, I love it. Do you know what I love?
And I've said this to you before. You know what
you guys have done, and you know the way in
which makes his cars for a cure continues to help
families around the territory is incredible. But the support that
you get from the community, I'm not even surprised by
it because you and Naomi beautiful people and you're you're

(07:29):
out there, you're helping others, and that's what people want
to be involved in, that real territory spirit. So I
think it's incredible what you guys do.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Yeah, territories are definitely generous. Are the people don't even
have to ask him, They just step up and said
what can we do this year? You know a lot
of the time, and they back it up year after year,
you know. So it's beautiful business is out there.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Absolutely No, it's so good to see well link. I
hope it's going to go off. I know it'll go off.
You'll probably get more registrations than you've ever had before,
but will be keen to talk to you again to
find out just how well it goes. Thank you as
always for joining us on the show.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Yeah amazing, Thanks Eves, Katie appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
No worries, thank you.
