Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, a bit of a change of pace because we
know a number of community events have been planned for
Fanny Bay this week. Now tonight the Sausage Sizzle is
being held to farewell the owners of the Fanny Bay Supermarket.
They have run the business for almost forty years. Then
on Sunday there's a community funday happening at the Equestrian
(00:22):
Club at East Point Reserve. I know that people absolutely
love getting there and joining us in the studio. To
tell us a little bit more is the local member
Laurie Zeo. Good morning to you.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Good morning Katie, and good morning to everybody out there.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Lovely to have you in the studio now.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Firstly, tell me about the plans to farewell Manuel and Nitza.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Oh, I'm so sad. I I'm so used to going
in there and seeing their smiling faces and enjoying the
rice pudding and the roast chooks and salads and olives
and all that stuff that it's really good to offer.
So really sad to see them go, But I'm so
happy for them to finally sell the supermarket and enjoy
their retirement like they deserve.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
I feel exactly the same, and we are going to
catch up with money on the show tomorrow. But you know,
sometimes my daughter and I will go in there on
a Saturday and Manuel's busy as You'll go to me, Katie,
have you eaten yet? And I'm like, oh, no, I've
come in to buy stuff for a feed and He'll go, no,
I'll make you a sandwich.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
I cam, do you like this?
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Do you like that?
Speaker 3 (01:20):
And I'm like, oh, this busy man. And then have
you tried these?
Speaker 1 (01:24):
Next minute, I'm trying these, you know, like these beautiful
Greek desserts that.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
I've never tried before.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
And that's you know, that's something I think that people
just love.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, they absolutely do. I've been in there so many
times over the years and Manuel's always been so accommodating.
He takes you into his office and he sits down
and has a chat to you, and he tells you everything,
always offering you food and water. Ye can't feed you enough,
but no.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
And also, you know, over the years has given me,
you know, some really important information for the people of
Fanny Bay and around that area where there's been issues
of crime, there's been different issues that have unfolded, and
he is somebody who's always stood up for his community.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Absolutely. I went in and see him yesterday and had
a quick chat to him and I sort of said
to him, how are you feeling about everything? And he said,
he goes, you know, I'm a little bit sad. But
then he went on to talk about how he feels
like he's leaving the shop in a really good place.
He said, he feels like the area in and around
Fanny Bay has settled down a little bit recently, so
he's feeling really comfortable. His staff are all staying on
(02:26):
which is really amazing here. So he's feeling a little
bit sad, But I think this would be really good
for him, might be able to get to travel a
little bit, yees, spend more time with his grandkids.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Yeah. Absolutely, Well, as I said, we will try. We
are going to have him on the show tomorrow, so
I'll be keen to find out, you know, what are
some of the more memorable moments for him over the years.
And look, I always love as well whenever you go
in there, he's got mixed one oh four.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
Nine on the radio.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
Man.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
You'll hope the new owners do that as well.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Mate.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
But I mean forty years in terms of what then
you've planned for the sava Oft.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
You've got a bit of a barbecue lined up.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Yeah, we're just gonna take the trailer down. We'll have
a sausages out the front. We'll chuck some sausages on
for people that come down. We've shared the love. We've
put some flyers out to the Fanny Bay community and
in and around the shops there, so hopefully we'll get
some people down. Manny and his family will be there
to say goodbye to people his last day or he'll
probably talk to you about it last day on Monday,
So hopefully we get few people down there. When we
were delivering some fliers, a lot of people didn't know
(03:22):
that he was leaving, so they were really happy to
sort of get the notification to come down and say
thank you. He's done a lot for the community.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
What time do they need to be there?
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Five till about six thirty? Will chuck on the sausages.
M So, yeah, if anybody wants to come down from
that period of time or badly.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Completely, absolutely get down there and see Manual and Nitza.
They are phenomenal people and I know that they you know,
like over the years as well, they've had a lot
going on personally for Nitza as well in terms of
her health. So I think there's such a beautiful couple,
a wonderful family, and they do a lot to support
the community. You know, another year, I rocked up and
(03:58):
it was the day before.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Run with Dad.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
I used to organize obviously around East Point, and I
rock up and I said to Manuel, I can't even
remember what I was going to buy.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
And he was like, oh, Katie, come out here. Have
you got water? Have you got this? Have we got that?
I was like, I already do is it? Tell me
next time and I'll make sure I help you with it.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
That's right, We're going to go to get a rice
pudding because Knitza makes the best.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Right, That's exactly right.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
So get on down there five o'clock, psavo and and
you know, say it. Thank you to those wonderful people
that have done a lot for the community over the
years and supported so many events and so many people.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Over the years.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
Absolutely, it's not the only thing on Sunday as well.
You've got the fun day and people can go. It's
actually at the Equestrian Club.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Yeah, we've got a big, really big day planned. We
sort of started off and now it's going out to
be bigger than Ben Herb. But we've got We've got
pony rides and habar rides. We've got jumping castle. We've
got the fire truck coming down so the kids can
climb in and out and around the fire truck. We've
got the Mounted Police coming down as well as the
dog squad. We've got the Royal Flying Doctor service plane,
(05:03):
the simulator that they have so kids can have lacoon
around that. We've got empty art storm coming down to
do their sand cards. We've got free coffee for mum
and dad because we know we'll need that. We've got
another sausage Sizzle, and a whole heap of activities for kids.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
So what time is that kicking off?
Speaker 2 (05:18):
That's nine o'clock on Sunday morning, nineteen eleven. There you go.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
You might do the half marathon and then duck coffee.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Everybody's going to need a coffee by then.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Before I let you go. Is there a bit of
an update how things that?
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Because you and I've spoken on a few occasions about
the Botanic Gardens and about the playground there, how things going.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
I have been going down there probably once a week
for have you for a long time now, just to
check in on the status. They've got big fences up.
You can't really see in there, but I.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Sleep waiting for the sippering slide to reopen for you.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
Absolutely, I am no. They're doing really good work. They're
nearly finished, so I'm hoping that in the next week
or two we'll have some advice about the date that
we can reopen. And I'm hoping that I can join
up with the Minister of Parks and Wildlife, Ryklai Boothy
and have a little opening ceremony or celebration with her
down there. Yeah, and really really excited to get that open.
(06:07):
It looks really good. They've got the new soft fall down,
They've they've made it safe for kids. There's a new step,
new set of steps because they're a little bit close
to his life before. So there's been a whole heap
of work. I went down and met with the project
manager and he walked me through all of the changes
that they had to make. It wasn't a little job. Okay,
so you might go down there and you think it
looks the same, but the amount of work that they've
done is amazing. So it'll be really safe for the kids.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Now, but so it should be open soon.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
I'm hoping in the next couple of weeks we get
that note off CALESHS.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Awesome well, Laurie ze O, the member for Fanny Bay.
Really good to speak with you this morning. I appreciate
your time.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Thank you so much for having me.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
Thank you
