Speaker 1 (00:00):
Police yesterday confirmed seven police Auxiliary Liquor Inspectors have now
been deployed to Catherine in response to issues which saw
a service station worker sprayed with a fire extinguisher and
a young armed duo allegedly running a mark Now. Speaking
at a press conference yesterday, the Acting Commissioner, Travis Wurst,
had said the seven palis had been sent from Alice

(00:22):
Springs to support the Catherine community in the wake of
those incidents. He told the media yesterday that Thursday and
into Good Friday, there were a number of criminal events
that occurred in Catherine. There was an unlawful entry where
two offenders produced a weapon a knife and as a consequence,
stole a white toyot to Corolla from that address. Now,

(00:42):
he said the vehicle was later used in an unlawful
entry then at another Catherine business. Joining me on the
line from Catherine is the local member Joe Hersey. Good
morning to you, Joe.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Good morning Katie, and good morning listeners.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Joe.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
It sounds like there's been a number of concerning incidents.
Can you tell us what happened over the Easter weekend?

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Yes, So, Katie, we had a you know, a horrendous
weekend over the Easter break, and interestingly enough, there was
a lot of people that were in town that didn't
go away for various reasons. I had spoken to, you know,
a lot of people out in the community that had
stayed home for Easter, probably due to the fact that
maybe it was going to rain or whatever. But we

(01:26):
saw the incident at the United Servo, and I've spoken
about the owner of the United Servo many times in Parliament.
I've asked questions about it. And what we saw there
was the staff member. You know, a whole group of
youths had come in. They smashed through the door, came in,
moved themselves through the little area where you pay the

(01:50):
attendant and sole cigarettes and other goods in the shop.
You know, nineteen thousand dollars worth of damage was done
to that business. Wow, and they seemingly are laughing and
carrying on as if it's just a joke. Meanwhile, the
attendant is scared out of her mind and has quit
her job. You know, how can we retain and attract

(02:12):
people to Catherine when we have this kind of blatant
just absolutely no care of youth going about. There are
no consequences for them, and it's absolutely unacceptable. I spoke
to so many people over the weekend, Katie that are
just they have just had a gubtful and at their
wits end as to you know, the guy that's got

(02:34):
the service station said to me, you know, I saw
how you going today, and he said, there's no happy
day in Catherine.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
I just thought, it's terrible.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Someone who's lived here for thirty four years. I just
find that extremely sad. That's about our community.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
It's terrible.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
It is a terrible situation when you know when this
crime is impacting everybody's lives every day, Joe, I understand.
And there was an incident involving a new teacher to town.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Can you tell me what happened?

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Yeah, that was absolutely shocking. I received an email from
that teacher and he had been a new teacher to town.
He was in a leadership position at the school that
he was at and absolutely loved it and was doing
great work. I've spoken to the principle of that school
as well. But he had a friend over and the

(03:27):
friend's wife and they were woken to a disturbance at
the house, threatened with a knife, and his car was stolen.
And he is so traumatized Katie. He doesn't even want
to come back to Catherine to get his goods and
get the hell out of mind. He said he would
not be back so he saw again. I just had
a great long conversation with him yesterday, and you know,

(03:49):
he's waiting for his family to arrive in Catherine. He said,
thankfully they weren't there. He only had third party insurance
on his car, so he now doesn't have a car.
You know, it's absolutely horrendous that. Again, we need teachers
here in Katherine, and I know that there are other
schools that do not have the required amount of teachers

(04:10):
to teach kids. And an incident like that, how the
hell are we ever going to attract teachers to the
community when this kind of thing goes on.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Well, that's right, I.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Like the girls so traumatized. I couldn't even believe it
when he was telling me the story.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
Yeah, well, this is the concern, isn't it.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
You know, when something like that happens, it'd be enough
to make you go, all right, I am not uprooting
my family or bringing them to Catherine because I don't
feel that they can be safe. And we're talking about
a teacher here is somebody who, as you've said, is
in a leadership role at the school. It is disappointing. Well,
it's worse than disappointing. It's bloody terrible, and we've all

(04:49):
just reached a point where we do not want it
to happen anymore.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
I mean John, not.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Only that, Katie, Well, he was talking to the police.
The people drove past in the car, as I say,
were tormenting them, you know, and obviously the police aren't
going to give chase to someone like that.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yes, you know, there real sense?

Speaker 1 (05:08):
Is there a real sense in Catherine because I think
you know Catherine is it's it's a beautiful town. It's
a smaller town. Everybody knows everyone like. It's such a
great place in so many ways. But is there a
real sense at the moment from a lot of long
term locals that you know that you've got you've got
some in the community who feel like they can sort
of do with whatever they want without a consequence to

(05:30):
their action.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
That people feel powerless, people feel let down. People are
leaving town. I'm not just making this up. It's actually real.
People are leaving town. People are talking about leaving town.
You know, it is as I said, I've lived here
for thirty four years, my husband's born here, my kids
are born here. We have never seen anything like this
in all my life of living here. So I don't

(05:55):
think there would be too many long term territorians that
live here in Catherine that wouldn't say the same thing. Yet,
underneath all of that, we do, Katie, we have an
amazing community. You know, we saw amazing amounts of money
raised for the family that were in a horrific accident
on the Artem Highway. So underneath all that we have
an amazing community. But we are being let down by

(06:17):
a government that is just there is no consequences for
these youth out on the streets and people have had
a doustbault. Every day you wake up and will it
be on the run, will it be BP? Will it
be sill? Will it be united? Every single day these
businesses are being attacked by these youth that know they
are untouchable. They call themselves untouchable, and it is not

(06:40):
good enough. Joe.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
I know that palis have now been diverted from Alice
Springs to Catherine.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Do you know if they've arrived yet?

Speaker 2 (06:48):
So they have arrived, and I did notice that yesterday.
But again, you know, I knew on the eleventh of
March that no palis were going to be here in Catherine.
So what I want to know is what was the
planning around that. You know, if the government knew they
were removing palis and sending them to the courting done,
which is fantastic to get more police on the ground,

(07:09):
then we saw them go to Alice Springs and obviously,
you know this is poor planning and policy on the
run by you know, the government.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
So, Joe, has it made a difference since o'verived? Has
it made a difference since o' arrived?

Speaker 2 (07:23):
Well, not only has there been the palies on the
bottle shops, Katie, we have actually got two constables at
the entrance to both the pubs the Cuting hotel. As
I drove through the three yesterday, I thought, oh, I
wonder what's going on here? And you know, on further
conversations they're there at the door apparently for the next
two weeks while you know the operations going on down

(07:47):
there in Alice Springs. But Katie, I have asked numerous
times the Police Minister in the last sittings of Parliament.
We've even asked questions in question time and the police
insister blatantly says to me, Member Catherine, I can assure
you there is pulleys on the ground in Tathlin.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
Yeah, people don't believe it, you know, Like I always
think in situations like that, the people of Catherine and
the people of Valice Springs.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
Know better than anybody else.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
And you know, standing up inside Parliament, unless you're there,
unless you're living there, you really don't.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
Know what is going on. Joe.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
I do want to ask you just about something that
a listener had got in contact with us about last week,
and that is a couple of lockdowns that had occurred
at to mid Min College. Now we were told that
there was two lockdowns last week. The Department of Education
has now confirmed that to Midmin College did initiate two
short lockdowns last week as per normal school safety protocols.

(08:42):
They say that police were notified on both occasions as
per safety protocols, and as per normal procedures, the school
community was notified of both lockdowns, all staff and students
remained safe. They're basically saying violence in any form in
our schools is unacceptable and will not be tolerated and
the safety of our students and staff is our top

(09:03):
priority and they'll work closely with all of our schools
to provide a safe learning and work environment. But Joe,
as the opposition spokesperson for education, I mean we've had
a few incidents now where there has been situations of
you know, of real concern for a lot of parents
and indeed students at.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
Schools across the territory.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
As the alternative minister for education, I mean, how do
you think that we have an impact or make an
impact in this space.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
So, first of all, I think the teachers and the
students there, certainly their safety needs to be first and foremost.
But I've actually had a couple of emails myself lately,
Katie about phones back in schools, and I know last
year that there was a ban on you know, there
was a no phone policy in school. So I'm about
to write the minister an email just to find out

(09:55):
what's happening with that, because it seems that they have
come back into the school environment and that causes a problem,
you know, with bullying behavior in schools as well. And
I was just reading an email about that before you call, right,
But you know, what we need to we need to
make sure that we boost attendance and that literacy and

(10:16):
numeracy levels, which we've seen at all time lows. That
is of prime importance in a school community. But what
we need to do is get crime and safety under
control to be able to get the teachers into those
environments and keep them safe.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
A few questions coming through from listeners, people wondering whether
the CLP would commit to the school based constables being
back based in the schools.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
So we have spoken about school based constables being back
in schools, but also counselors being back in schools as well, Katie,
because last year we saw, you know, the minister removed
counselors and send them to the Mitchell Center. And again
I've had conversations with the people around that. I've spoken
about my own somen that needed a counselor in the

(11:01):
school environment. They are not going to ring and make
an appointment to see a counselor. Those counselors must be
in a school environment for the best for those students
that need great Still having a bad day and you
feel like you need to go and talk to someone.
As a teenager, I know it was a long time,
but I do remember I would not have picked up

(11:22):
the phone, not that there was mobiles then, but I
would not have picked up the phone and rung someone.
But if I could have walked into someone's office.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
I agree I would have done that. Yeah, I totally agree.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
Very important in the school environment.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
And look, that is something that has been raised with
us as well with me actually by students. So you know,
I think it is something that you know that we
need to make some moves on to make sure that
those kids have got that support that they need in schools, Joe,
before I let you go this morning, we have also
seen that the Laws and Territory government have announced that
they're going to be well, they're making moves I guess

(11:57):
you would say, because it's still sort of four years
down the track by the look of things, but to
address key worker and private sector accommodation shortages in both
Dallas Springs and Catherine. So three Northern Territory companies are
going to construct one hundred and ninety three new dwellings
in both Dallas and Catherine. What's been the reaction from
the community of Catherine at this point. We understand those

(12:18):
dwellings are going to be completed by twenty twenty five
and also be available for government workers and the private market.

Speaker 2 (12:26):
So Katie. Last year in February, there was a media
release that came out from the government and stating that
they would build two hundred and forty homes in Catherine.
I know, Venture Housing built eight and Government Housing have
built I think another eight, so yeah, we are well
short of our housing here in Catherine. But there's also

(12:46):
the Catherina Street Casina development number three that has been
finished a year ago and still none of those blocks
are for sale. So I'm pretty sure you would talk
to people and they would welcome the development of houses
being built, but again you have to have the workforce
to do that. The worker's camp which has been a

(13:07):
bit controversial on on the roads, no no, I like
the way government do that and they say, oh, we're
building this development in Rundle Street. That is a private
development by a private citizen who's doing a great job
of adding to the housing, you know, for more people

(13:31):
to have a rental in Catherine. So that is where
private business absolutely comes in. And Sislers have had just
got the go ahead to do the worker's camp on
Lansdowne Road, which has caused controversy in that area.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
Now, Joe, before I let you go, Yeah, sorry, you
keep going.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
No, no go on.

Speaker 3 (13:51):
I was going to say, before I let.

Speaker 1 (13:52):
You go, somebody's just speed in contact with me and said, Cuddy,
if it's the service stations that are being targeted, why
are the police being put on bottle shops? I mean,
what do you make of that statement? I guess it's
a really common sense sort of question to ask at
this point, because it does seem like the servos in
Catherine are very much being targeted right now.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
So a couple of weeks ago add on the Run,
when those youths were there and just you know, allegedly
one of the youths that I know from the footage
I've seen from on the Run VP, the three of
them were bailed and one of those people I recognized
in the United thing as well. So I'm going to
be asking questions on that as well. Again, it gets

(14:34):
back to letting these same people out to repeat the
same violence offense and you know, ruin other people's businesses
and whatever. However, United they had the police mobile van
out the front there. It was there for maybe two weeks.
I spoke to the business that United. You didn't seem
to think it made too much difference. But each one
of these service stations, Katie, in the evening on the Run,

(14:57):
when they had their disturbance, there was a security guard
there United on the two days after they had their
desservants on the weekend, by those youths, they had security.
They got their own security in or on those places.
Seem to manage to these people. No, the guy from
on the Run, he was the man that got the

(15:20):
youth out with the extinguisher, which probably led them to thinking, oh,
this is a good idea. I'll see that at BP.
So these people are putting things in place to help
prevent youth coming in and not offending in their premises.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
And it's still happening there.

Speaker 2 (15:36):
Yeah. No, there is no consequence. Yes, get back to
there are no consequences for anything. And they are just
laughing in the face of these workers and the police
and Joe.

Speaker 1 (15:48):
People have had a gutful of it. I think there's
no other way to put it. People have had a gutful.
We are going to have to leave it there. I
really appreciate your time this morning. Thank you so much
for having a chat with me and making us aware
of what's going on in Catherine.

Speaker 3 (16:00):
Thanks Katie, Thank you talking so Thanks Joe,
