Speaker 1 (00:00):
And as I said, the Dolphins have been announced as

(00:01):
the Northern territories new NRL team as part of a
three year partnership, and the Minister for Tourism and Hospitality,
Marie Claire Boothby, joins me on the line. Good morning
to your minister.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Good morning Katie and to your listeners.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Now it comes after the end of a twelve year
partnership with the Paramatta Eels. It is incredibly exciting news.
Have we got any idea when that first game's going.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
To be We don't just yet, Katie. But of course
the NRL will put their fixtures out when they do
and so then we'll get to find out exactly when
it will be here in Darwin and also who they'll
be playing. And it is super exciting. I mean you
mentioned Paramatta there, and after twelve years of having a
new South Wales team, where now going for a Queensland.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Team always controversial depending on who you follow in the origin.
But yes, I'm very happy to see a queens ooned
team because I actually think that there is that connection
as well a lot of the time with those Queen
Zone teams to the Northern Territory.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Yeah. I met a couple of these Dolphin players and
they are fantastic. I mean the way that they get
out and engage with the community members and the kids.
I mean, they've already been coming to the territory over
the last couple of years and they are just next
level when it comes to community engagement. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
Did that sort of play a bit of a part
here in this decision being made because they have been
doing stuff in the NT over the last couple of years.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
It's certainly had to play in it, for sure. I mean,
we wanted someone that had that really good connection with
us and that could be you know, territory and like
we are and we're different up here, we're unique and
we're pretty amazing, and I think that it is a
good fit because the Dolphins players they just you know, we've.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
We seem to have lost the minister there. Hopefully I've
got a back. Can you hear me their minister? I
can hear you, Yes, perfect, gotch, Sorry, please keep going.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
I was just saying that it's really wonderful to have
them and watching them out in the community. I think
it was last year I was out at Palmerston watching
them interact with the kids at one of the clubs,
and you know, the kids are just in awe of
the players and they just know how to deal with them,
like they're getting their hats signed and shirts signed. And
even Oorn Keeley actually on Monday was telling us that

(02:12):
that's one of the best things he loves about being
a player and being able to come to the territory
to engage with the kids. So it's wonderful to have
them here.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
It is now talk me through in terms of the
details of the partnership. Is there going to be you know,
quite a bit of that community engagement. How's it all
going to work?

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Yeah, And I guess that's part of what is so
great about the Dolphins is we've been able to secure
that partnership so that elite sports development and participation programs
will occur through the junior development pathways and of course
we'll have that managed by NRL and t they're really
excited about that opportunity, and you know, we just want
as many territory and kids as possible to engage in sport.

(02:53):
And you know, kids love their NRL and being able
to have them, and like I said, they've already proven
that they really great with the territory kids. And this
will just continue.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Now talk me through from a tourism perspective in terms
of the NRL matches, because you know, someone's message through
here and said, oh once a year. Wow, I guess
you know, sort of being maybe not that thrilled that
it's only once a year, but in terms of the
tourism dollar and what it brings to the Northern Territory

(03:23):
when we do have NRL teams playing, whether it's the Dolphins,
whether it's the Yels, no matter who it is, talk
us through the impact from your perspective as the tourism minister.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Yeah, it certainly does have a huge impact, Katie. I
mean when teams travel here, not only do they bring
the players, but all of the entourage with them, and
there's a lot of people involved, and they have to
know they come here, they stay at our local hotels,
they eat at our restaurants and cafes, and they go
and spend money in our local businesses. So that's huge.
And that's not to mention all the supporters that have

(03:56):
those memberships and they follow the Dolphins around and so
you know, it's a huge thing for the territory. I
mean we're only a small jurisdiction in terms of population,
and yet we have so much to offer and we
of course want to increase the numbers of people coming
to visit. So if you're coming up for the footy
and then you tackle on a fishing trip or you know,
head out to one of our wildlife parks or something,
I mean, that's an amazing experience for people to come

(04:18):
and see. But of course we'll welcome them with open arms.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Well, look, we all love seeing sport here in the NT,
whether it's the NRL or the supercars as well. There's
been some further announcements around the supercars and it's looking
as though territorians are going to be able to see
all twenty five championship cars cruise through Darwin CBD ahead
of the action at Hidden Valley. So the Track to
Town initiative was launched last year, it's returning this year.

(04:44):
The Supercar Convoy though, is also going to travel from
Hidden Valley to the Espanade and I think that one's
kicking off about four o'clock. Just talk us through this,
you know, this initiative, I guess first off, and then
I do have a couple of listener questions about the supercars.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
Sure thing. So I think it's really exciting that we're
going to have the supercars to be able to be
even more engaging with Territorians while they're here. I mean
you've seen people like line the streets when they come through,
and you know now there's even more opportunity to be
able to engage them. Like you said, the twenty five
cars and their teams. I mean, it's what better way
to ask one of your driver favorite drivers a question

(05:24):
about being in the VPS. Of course, there's lots of
events leading up to the v eights as well, let
alone the jam packed weekend that we'll have, and so
I think no matter where you are in the top end,
you'll have a chance to either meet one of the
drivers come say high.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
Now, in terms of the time at which some of
these things are happening, Alan had called in to ask
you what time is the Tractor Towns Supercars event happening?
Surely not four pm? He reckons it's too hot, kids
are going to be heading home from school, people will
still be at work. What happened to the six pm
from last year?

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Yeah, I think I'll have to have a look at
the exact timing about Katie, I don't have that right
in front of me now, but of course we want
to try and make us it as accessible as possible people,
and you know it does go on for quite a
bit of time as well, so I think everyone's going
to have their opportunity to be able to get out
and take a look and hopefully meet one of your
favorite drivers.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
Well, Marrie Claire Boothby, the Minister for Tourism and Hospitality,
really appreciate your time this morning. Thank you very much
for having a quick chat with us.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Thank you, Katie, thank you
