Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sunday is of course Mother's Day and the Mother's Day
Classic is back. It's going to be a wonderful event
as always. It's starting at East Point and it raises
money and awareness for breast cancer. It's also an opportunity
to support those battling cancer and to one of the
loved ones that we've lost. Now joining me on the
line to tell us more about this year's event, the

(00:23):
chair of the Mother's Day Classic Committee in Darwin, Jordan
to It. Good morning to you.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Jordan, Good morning Katie. How are you going?

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Yeah, really good, lovely to have you on this show. Now,
what can we expect at this year's event?

Speaker 2 (00:38):
This year's event, we're changing things back a little bit.
So everyone loved east Point last year, so we're still there.
We've just moved into the larger grass area and I'm
glad we did because the registrations.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
Are looking very healthy.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
So we're expecting about seven hundred Darwin community members with
us to celebrate Mother's Day, but also to raise much
need advance of breast and ovarian cancer. Katie, if we
brought in the ovarian cancer fundraising efforts from last year,
I'm moving forward.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
That is great. I think it's wonderful you know that
everybody gets together on Mother's Day and not only raises money,
but you know, there to support each other, celebrate Mother's
Day and also honor our friends, family, all the loved
ones that we have lost to breast cancer and those
that are battling it and ovarian cancer.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Exactly. There's still you know, there's still sixty three people
every day in Australia diagnosed with breast or avarian cancer
and about twelve of those still do sadly lose their
lives to these diseases. So it's a great opportunity to
you know, raise funds for these causes, but come together
as a community, celebrate all the mums out there getting
the pink, get in the tail, go for that walk

(01:54):
or run. It's nice and accessible abilities of all ages,
bring the prams, bring the kids. We're really looking forward
to having everyone there on Sunday, and we pushed the
timing back a little bit this year just to give
us a little bit more light. So the runners will
be racing off from seven thirty am. The walkers will
be heading off at seven forty five am for the

(02:16):
five k, and the two k walkers will be leaving
at about ten past eight, and.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
Can you register? Can you still register? Like I know
that you said about seven hundred people. I Darwin is
notorious for registering late, Jordans, can they still register? You're
as spot on.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
We love a late registration, So you still can register
through the Mother's Day Classic website and just navigate through
to the Darwin portal. Registrations will be available on the
morning of, but if you can please register the day
before and then we can just organize bib collection. We
do have bib collection. Sorry, I should mention this on

(02:56):
Saturday at East Point, So just by the East Point Barbie,
Wendy and the volunteer team will be there, so anyone
that has registered and hasn't been able to get a
bid you can collect them from Wendy.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Awesome. Well, I will make sure that I collect mine.
And I was one of the late registrations yesterday as
well myself and my daughter, so I know that lots
of people will be registering late. Jordan. Tell me, I
know that you know you can run all walk as well.
I know you touched on this a moment ago, but
you don't have to sort of be a fast runner.
You can just go for a leisurely stroll, can't you.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
You absolutely can not. All of us are built like
yourself and your daughter, Katie. So look, my mum does
my two four year olds there in it. It's for
all ages, so we've got a big suite of people
from newborns all the way through to their eighties registered
to do the event, So you do not have to
be a fitness enthusiast. You can just want to be

(03:51):
there for the atmosphere. The two K is a really
good opportunity if you do have young kids or you're
just not quite prepared to do the fight, so absolutely
no pressure and if you do want to, you know,
just sit around the event religion instead, decide not to
do the wrong walk on the morning of.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
You can do that too.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Well.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
This is the thing. It's always such a nice atmosphere
and and you know, you see so many families there.
They're they're walking for somebody or they're running for somebody,
and that somebody may still be going through their cancer
journey or they may you know, they may have lost
that loved one and it's just such a beautiful feeling
I think for Mother's Day as well, to all sort

(04:30):
of be there for that real common goal or common
you know, common reason.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Everyone seems to know someone or is someone or has
a family member that has been impacted by breast cancer
or a varian cancer. So the morning of, I mean,
there's there's there's a celebration being Mother's Day, but it
is an emotional one as well for a lot of people.
So we do have the tribute walls and the opportunity
to you know, speak with the MC and share your

(04:58):
stories on the day of, just to kind of bring
that community field. But it's a very emotional day for
a lot of people.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Yeah. Now, Jordan, I know that you have been working
with an awesome group of volunteers to make this all
happen behind the scenes, haven't you.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
Yes, we have. Look, Darwin really do rally behind their events,
but these events do not happen without a committee and
dedicated volunteers. So I have to absolutely shout out our committee.
This year has been absolutely incredible and I think that's
a testament to the registrations that we've had. We've got
some excellent prizes on offers, so the Darwin community of

(05:35):
Rally Behind has got a bit of a raffle going
this year. So We'll be walking around so if anyone
wants to bring some change, bring some small notes. We've
got a raffle going. We have a Smoothie bike with
all donations being paid back to Mother's Day Classic. We've
got face painting, kids' activities. Lucy b Bubbles is going
to be there. We've got music, we've got the works,

(05:57):
so it's going to be a fantastic morning for family. Everyone,
come on down. We'd love to see you there and
raise money for two very very very important causes.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
They really are and a beautiful way to spend your
Mother's Day. I'll be there Jordan, lovely to catch up
with you and we'll see you Sunday.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Thank you, Katie, look forward to seeing you there.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
Thank you.
