Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now the top end is gearing up from motocross spectacle
as the MXGP of Australia raws into Darwin's Hidden Valley
Raceway from the nineteenth to the twenty first of September,
marking the FIM Motocross World Championship's highly anticipated return to
Australia after twenty four years. Now, as as that final

(00:23):
round of the Championship series comes to Darwin, it is
set to witness really historic, a historic, on purpose built
one point six kilometer world class track with three twenty
twenty five World Championships to be World champions, I should say,
to be crowned on home soil. Now joining us on

(00:44):
the line is Motorcycling Australia's Chief Executive Officer, Peter Doyle.
Good morning Peter.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Good morning Katie.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Lovely to have you on the show mate. It must
be pretty exciting knowing that the World Motocross is back
in Australia after twenty four years. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
I was fortunate enough to bert the last one at
Broughtford in Victoria and it's been been a long time
between drinks and there was a lot of work went
in behind it. But yeah, we're glad to see it
back and great to see NT major events get behind
it and bring it up up to the territory.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
I mean, give us a bit of an idea of
what it looks like, you know, what it looked like
twenty four years ago, and the kind of spectacle that
we will say.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yeah, look we I was on the other side of
the fence back then. I was a team manager at
Kawasaki with a writer called Andrew McFarlane back in those days,
and we actually got a podium at that Grand Prix
at Broadford and it was the launching pad for Andrew
McFarlane and Chad Reed and Michael Byrne with their performances

(01:53):
there in both Australia and the Grand Prix against the
world's best that really launched their international career. Is so,
but you know it was it was pretty raw back then.
It was really just like a lot of people at
a motocross track with a few signs up and about this.
It'll look a lot different in this day and age

(02:14):
with the way the companies market and I.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Mean by the look of the timetable, well it's been released,
it looks like there's going to be action right from
sort of the juniors up to the biggest names in
world motocross. Who can we expect when you talk about
some of those big names and what we're going to see.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
I look, all the all the top riders will come,
you know, being the last round of the year, we've
got to be a bit a bit wary that. You know,
motocross people do suffer, suffer injuries, but you're all the
world class riders from m xtre people be coming in
all categories m X one, MX two, MXW three days.

(02:57):
We've got qualifying, we've got qualifying races, we've got junior supports,
We've got Australia's best up and coming talent as the
support categories. So yeah, look over the three days, you're
going to see the next generation and plus the current
world champions. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
I love that and I think to myself, Gee, it
must be exciting then for those juniors to be, you know,
to be there, to be on the same track as
those that are absolutely at the top of their game. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Having them, having them been able to participate in front
of all the manufacturers and all the global teams is
something that you know, it's been missing in motocross in
this country. But you know, you get out there and
you perform well, you get noticed. And when once you
get noticed by those big teams, you know, the rest

(03:50):
is up to you to lift your game and hopefully
it creates that pathway into the into the World Championships.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Now, Peter, I understand there's also going to be state challenge.
How will that work and what can people expect?

Speaker 2 (04:06):
So each of each of the states that we have,
which is seven states and territory, are selecting their own
team for the two categories. So each state will be
represented by six riders that will get selected from each
state in the two classes, and they will race for

(04:27):
points for their state. So we'll have the junior the
eighty five CC class with the juniors there, they'll race
for their own Plus we'll have the MX three locals
which are under eighteens, and they will race for theirs,
and then they'll also be a combined point score for

(04:48):
the winning state.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
Do we have any idea how many riders we are?
You know, we could potentially see competing here in the
Northern territory.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Look where again, coming back to injuries, you're expecting probably
seventy five to come from Europe, maybe seventy five or
more to come from Europe and we're hoping to put
ten wild cards into each class if we can. That's

(05:21):
what we're pushing for. We haven't been accepted, but it's
I think we'll get ten wild cards per class. So
you would see thirty odd Australians in the world, plus
you're looking at another eighty odd riders in the two
support classes.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
How big an opportunity is that for those wild card writers.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
To perform, to perform in front of an international audience,
international teams, manufacturers, and also just to be there in
the atmosphere, see how they operate, see how the world
champions work, how they ride the Our thought are that
the local writers going there now they're our next potential

(06:06):
world champions.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Yeah. In terms of you know how many people we
could see head along to watch? Are we like can
the Northern Territory, can I starwin residents? Expect to see
visitors from all over Australia and indeed around the world.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Yes, you're I would expect well, people from every state
will be coming to watch. There's huge interest within the
motocross community and I would suggest to you that a
majority of ticket sales and are all coming from the
interstas now because you've got to plan your trips to

(06:44):
the territory and you know whether you're driving, flying, camping,
taking extra holiday, all the interstages. But you're also talking
about anywhere but up to a thousand people coming in
from overseas. So we've got TV production, you've got the riders,
you've got the teams, and then you've got you into Asy,

(07:07):
you've got the spectators that may decide. You know, it's
actually closer to come down from some parts of Asian
than it is to come from Melbourne.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
Well, i'll tell you what hopefully we I mean, we're
all hoping that we see a lot of people here
in the Northern Territory.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
I think you're going to find the town is selling
up rapidly and we're still three months out.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
Yeah, good, well that is good to hear. Well, Peter,
I'll tell you what. It's been interesting for me to
have a chat to you this morning. I don't know
a huge amount about motocross, so for me, it sounds
like it's going to be so very exciting. I know
a lot of our listeners are going to be super
super keen to head along.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Well, if you're if you're if you're free that weekend.
Let me know and we'll take you out for.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
A bit of a tour in oh Sounds like a plan, Peter,
great to talk to you this morning, mate, I really
appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
Thanks Cattie, thank you.
