Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now we know that a free community session in Darwin
is happening well this weekend. It's going to brief Territorians
on how to lawfully and safely carry oc spray and
that follows the recent legislative changes allowing for its use
for personal protection. Now Neighborhood Watch NT and Personal Protection Strategies,

(00:20):
as I understand it, they're teaming up to run the
safe carriage and Handling session it's happening on Saturday. And
joining me in the studio to tell us a little
bit more is Veronica Larson from Neighborhood Watch. Good morning, Veronica,
It's lovely to have you in the studio. Now tell
me what's the we'll tell us a little bit more

(00:40):
about the aim of the session.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Sure, this is the first Oathy Spree training carriage and
handling safety session that we've done by itself, a standalone
and we are hoping that will get a lot of
people that have chosen to carry Oathy Spray coming to
meet us and behrama from ten to twelve this Saturday,

(01:05):
integrated training and what we'll be doing is going over
the legislative policy requirements safe carriage, storage and transportation of
this new personal protection tool, this item that people are
now carrying around. We go over risk assessment, situational awareness, handling,

(01:25):
and even decontamination practices and where to accidentally go off
or be used.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
Now I know everyone because some people listening what't be thinking?
Is it still going to happen if the STELLCLO in
comes but at these stays.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Is at this stage we are planning ongoing forward. But
anyone who has signed up or chooses to sign up
after hearing this show, we will contact them on Friday
and let them know either way whether it's safe to
go forward or not.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Now tell me what can people expect if they attain
the station.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
We are, as you said, partnering with Personal protect Strategies,
so we're really the leaders in personal safety in the
Northern Territory and they have specialized accredited certified OC spray
training instructors who will actually lead the course. So we
will do that in tangent that they will go over
the parts that they are actually accredited to provide yep.

(02:20):
And we'll chat about legislation, we'll chat about use. But
obviously neighborhood watching teeth position is just a neutral one
and we just want anyone considering to carry OC spray
or already carrying OC spray, to get that information to
do so safely.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
One hundred percent, and make sure that they know what
the rules and regulations are, make sure they're doing it safely,
and make sure they sort of know, I guess how
to use it in the impact that it's going to
have if they have to.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Use it right, it is an item of personal safety,
and it is a pepper spray, so even though it's
a vegetable, it probably wouldn't feel very good no getting that,
So we want to make sure that they understand the implication,
just like you were saying, this is serious, and you know,
in our personal safety sessions, we've also implemented a significant

(03:08):
portion of the time around OC spray and we'll share
a shorter version of this OC spray training happening on
Saturday and every single one of our personal safety sessions
throughout the year.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
And ver Aniqua, do you find like even with the
personal safety sessions, you know, with that identifying people, is
it mostly sort of women saying us, who would take.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Gosh, it's everyone? And what's really fantastic about how we've
kind of maneuvered the personal safety sessions so we can
do anything. But what we love to do is offer
a community session so anyone and everyone is welcome and
feels comfortable. There's also women specific personal safety sessions for
those people that would feel more comfortable in a women

(03:53):
only environment. And then we also of course have a
senior's personal safety session, and we just really like to
tailor some of the specific needs to make sure that
the audience is obviously getting you being able to capitalize
on how much of the information as possible and it's
actually applicable to them their marini.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Yeah, I reckon it's such a good idea, and particularly
with some of the scene is because we have seen
from time to time and I know even in Ellie
Springs at the moment there's concerns that scene needs are
being targeted. So I think it's really important that people
are able to attaind those sessions and look at different
ways that they're able to keep themselves a little bit
safer and protect themselves if the need arises.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah, that's it. And with Neighborhood Watch, what we really
love about those personal safety sessions. It's important that when
we're talking about OC spray and yes we're hosting trials
to provide that safety education piece because that's what we do.
We're already doing that, and we want to make sure
that people are equipped with the information to stay clear

(04:52):
of potentially dangerous situations. That's really the biggest message. Absolutely,
get people equipped with the escalation tools or awareness pieces
so they're like, oh, that looks like potentially hazardous situation.
I'm going to go ahead, and all the way. We
even chat about things like ego, you know, because that's
that's if someone turns and bumps into you and they're like, hey,

(05:13):
what where you're going, and then your you know, ego response,
your immediate response is to turn around and say something back.
And sharing personal protection strategies is just great. She really
spends a lot of time on a phrase called she
says do not engage, and it's honestly my favorite thing
about the entire session. So there's so many things that
we can avoid doing or being a part of, or

(05:34):
putting ourselves in harms way or a potentially threatening situation
that could be escalated just by walking away. We're de
escalating and hopefully the idea is that we get out
of a situation before it gets to a point where
you would need to employ something like a tactile functions
such as using a personal safety device or physical.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
And you want to be trying your base to avoid that, Veronica,
if I or anybody out there listening this morning, obviously
it is at this point in time that Saturday session
is continuing on. But I know it's not the only
session that you guys have. You also have the other
personal protection well workshops. I guess you'd call them. Where
can people go? What's the best way that they can register?

(06:19):
Is there's still the chance for them to do that?

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Yes, the best way to do that is visiting our
website in hwn T dot org dot au. You or
you can email our amazing admin and marketing wrapt admin
at nhwn T dot org dot eu or Google orc Spray,
Safecriage and Handling Workshop. Again, it'll be the Saturday from

(06:43):
ten to twelve and barrama and agreeted strategies.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
Awesome, well, Veronica Larson from Neighborhood Watch. Lovely to speak
to you this morning. Really appreciate you coming into the
studio and letting people know about this workshop.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Pleasure, Thank you for having us, Thank you, thanks so much,
