Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, we know, the world's richest fishing competition, the Million
Dollar Fish is back for season eleven and free registration
opened earlier this week. Keen anglers can start fishing for
prize tagged barrow from Wednesday, the first of October, but
you have to be registered to be eligible to win.
Now joining us Live on the Line, Northern Territory, Major

(00:22):
Events Company Executive Director Amy Luxton, Good morning, Amy.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Good morning Katie. How are you? Yeah? Really good?

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Lovely to have you on the show, Amy, Red Joe
opened on Monday, g and Off. We've had quite a
few people register already.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
We have had a huge response. We are happy to
say we had over four thousand people registered on the
first day alone, which will is huge, huge interest and
we're ahead of last year. Where we are now and
over thirty percent of those are interstate, which shows keen
interest in fishing here in the top end.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Bloody hellful one thousand on the first day. Yeah, so
I know the numbers did they keep going up after day?
What where do we are now?

Speaker 2 (01:10):
I think, well, we're getting close to seven now, which
is very exciting and on track. Last season we had
the most registrations in the history of the competition over
sixty thousand, So I think we're headed in that right direction.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Well, yeah, because I reckon most people sort of. I mean,
if there are anything like me, you think about doing
it and then you don't until it's kind of opened
or until you go out fishing.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Well exactly, you've got it. You've got to be registered
to win. You know, you don't want to be there
with a barrow in your hand and not have registered.
So I think people are getting on early, which is fantastic.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Now in terms of the interstate numbers, how many of
those did you say we're registered from interstate.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Which is fantastic. Yes, So yeah, we're really pleased to
see that. And you know, people coming up here, they
know the borough fishing is food anyway, and this is
a very good reason to come at that specific time.
So yeah, it's great.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Are there any other sort of trends that you're starting
to see or any from last year that you're hoping
to capitalize on for this year?

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Oh well, I think certainly. You know, across that season,
you know, we saw after record breaking first week of
fishing last season, and over seventeen fish in total were
caught across the last season so I think people know
they can kind of come anytime. We're seeing fantastic visitation
on the back of those registrations. We had nearly nine

(02:32):
thousand of the participants were from interstate last year, so
last season, so yeah, I think you know, word is
really out there about this competition.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Now, remind our listeners again when exactly the competition gets underway,
and you know some of the different things we need
to be aware of.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Absolutely. So yes, like you've said, you have to be
registered in order to win. Registrations are open right through
the competition, but fishing start on the first of October
right through to the thirty first of March next year,
so that's the window to catch those barriers. You do
have to be over eighteen in order to win, but

(03:14):
you can win things throughout without even going fishing. We've
got fantastic prizes this year, things like and off light voucher's,
top end holiday packages, Shamano fishing parks, lots of merch well,
all sorts of giveaways throughout. We'll have a bit of
a twist on that that we'll announce in the coming weeks.
We'll also we've got eleven barriers that will be carrying

(03:37):
the one million dollar tag this season, so eleven for
season eleven, which is fantastic. Nine of those will be
from season nine one from last season and then the
new ones for this season, so that's fantastic. But yes,
to register, which is free Million dollar Fish dot com
dot au and follow all of our channels for some
of those you know, tips and tricks.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
Yeah, we're exactly remind us of those spots, those locations
where the tagged barrow can be found.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
So the process is underway. The across the top end
sort of fishing regions is where the tag barrow can
be found. But we do know there's some hot spots
and I think we will share some as we get
closer to the first of October, you know, where people
can pick them up. But yeah, top end, across the top.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
End, across the top end. Well, Amy, good to catch
up with you, and a million dollar Fish dot com
dot au is where people need to go to register.
I hope, I hope we see the million dollar Fish
go off again.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
I reckon.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
It's fantastic. When it happened me to.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
One an exciting time that was, so yes, we hope
to see it again and thank you.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
Yeah, good to catch up with you Amy, no doubt
we'll talk to you again soon.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Absolutely, thanks Katie, thank you,
