Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now we know that's cricket fever. Well, I think it's
(00:03):
already set in in the Northern Territory, but even more
so this weekend and there's going to be a fan
day happening ahead of the return of international cricket to Darwin.
Now joining me in the studio is Northern Territory Cricket
CEO Gaven Dovey. Good morning, Gas, Katie. Mate, how exciting
You've got so much going on.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
I'm so excited, so excited. This has been a long
time coming, and we are literally on the cuffs.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
So how are you feeling just days out from international
crickets returning to the Northern Territory. Like it's massive?
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Yeah, it's huge. Yeah, so much energy at the moment.
It's so much excitement and South Africa's already been training.
Ossie's already yeah, drip feeding in Yeah, I think I
think fel the boys are actually out fishing at the moment.
I think if you've come in early to have a
fish and the rest arrived tomorrow and yeah, just building
the excitement towards.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Sunday, Mate, remind us what he is planned for Sunday?
First off, for the actual match.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah, So Sunday, first T twenty ever held in the
Tea Ritory. International cricket back first time seven nine years
and we're officially starting the Australian summer cricket right here
in Darwin. Yeah, so amazing. So that's a trifecta to
put into perspective how big it is and the Aussie
team that's coming is so good. Just chatting some before
(01:17):
Glenn Maxwell, Josh hayes Wood, Mitch Marsh, Tradhead, Cam Green,
like you know, superstars of the game. So it's going
to be such an amazing night on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
People just going nuts, like how the ticket sales looking unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
We will be sold out for Sunday by tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
So how many people is that?
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Ten thousand? So there'll be ten thousand packed in there.
That's the official capacity for a cricket game at the venue.
And I reckon we've got four hundred tickets left for Sunday,
so that they'll be gone by tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
I've never been to a game of international cricket. What
is it like the footy where you've got fireworks and
stuff going off?
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Well, particularly T twenty cricket, you know, like a Test match,
is a long, slow, sort of good book that you
can sort of ease into and you don't have to
sort of catch every moment, whereas T twenty it's just
action pack for three hours. So I'm already even though
I've consumed an extraordin amount of cricket in my life
too much, I just can't wait to get there on
(02:16):
Sunday and have Cagizo Robata, who's like one of the
world's best bowlers Forst of Africa, steaming in boiling to
Glenn Maxwell or Trapehead and just six is flying everywhere
with a full house. It's going to be amazing, how.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Good and that the crowd is going to go berserk.
I reckon. I think Territory is going to absolutely turn it.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
On, certainly judging by the ticket sales. I mean everyone
has been telling the Territorians by.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Late Yeah, you know, it's going to be like you've
sold about.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Already before Sunday, which is just phenomenal. But you know,
someone reminded me early today, well, you know this is
international sport. Don't know, there's not a heap of international
sport here. You know, we get an AFL, we get
an NRL and a few things like that, but this
is you know, this is international cricket and so I
reckon it says that the Territorians, you know, they want
a lot more of it, so we're hopefully going to deliver.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
It's going to be fantastic. Now in the leading as well,
there's a few other bits and pieces happening. But there's
an actual fan day, isn't there.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Yeah, a fan day on Saturday afternoon down at Darwin Waterfront,
so beautiful setting. The whole Australian team is coming down
for that, which is again just unprecedented that doesn't happen.
So really grateful to Cree Australia to support that event
and get all the Aussie boys down there. The event
will run from four thirty to seven. I think the
(03:30):
Aussi boys are training that afternoon so they won't arrive
until about five thirty. But get on to the Anti
Cricket website because you need to register, and already we've
got over a thousand people that are registered, so it's
already yep. So we're starting to sort of like go, okay,
this is getting quite big.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
Oh for a giggle mate, because people rock up a lot,
people register late and.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
I know it won't register, but you need to got
to register. Yeah, so that's gonna be awesome. So we
have all those guys down there that'll be signing autographs,
playing some game of cricket stuff to do for the kids.
And Westpac, new sponsor of CA, will be down there
running activation as well. So yeah, it's going to have
been an awesome community event for all the cricket fans,
(04:12):
sports fans in just.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
An enormous number of eyes on Darwin internationally as well.
Like this is something that's so good for us tourism
wise and like sports tourism wise.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Yes, huge, and I think we spoke about it last time.
This will be the most watched sporting event that's ever
been played in the territory. So we're absolutely stoked that
not only can we get ten thousand people through the turnstiles,
but you're going to have this huge global audience. The
Indian broadcaster goo Star has three hundred million subscribers, you know,
So it's two big ticks. Great for the territory and
(04:46):
we think cricket can really be a vehicle that markets
and promotes this place.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
Gave any idea whether you've got like as part of
the tickets that have already been sold. Do you have
any idea how many of those people are coming from
into state or overseas.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Yeah, we're in the thousands. That information comes a little
bit slower than the sort of the big number, but yeah,
I reckon we'll have at least one to two thousand
interstate people. Looks like I think a lot of Victorians
are coming up. So obviously you know those Coulder climates
down south, so that interstate visitation is really good. We've
got some people coming from the UK, the US, India,
(05:19):
so the overseas visitations there as well, which is again
great for the territory.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
And what do you think it means as well? And
I speak to you about this quite often, but what
do you reckon it means in terms of local cricket,
particularly for our juniors here in the Northern territory when
you're seeing these kind of matches, these kinds of players
here in Darwin.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Yeah, it inspires that next generation. And as a parent
we talk about it all the time. Just you know
the power of being able to take five ten year
old along to the cricket to a fanda and be
able to meet Glenn Maxl a travhead can just have
such a huge impact on someone that sort of loves
that sport, watches that sport on TV, but maybe doesn't
get that opportunity to get that up and close to
(05:58):
the hero. So that's really really good. And then we've
produced talented crickets here in the territory, your Darcy Shorts,
Kane Richardson's Jake Weatherold who's pushing for a back of Green.
You know, the territory produces talent and sometimes again getting
that opportunity to see these guys up close and see
that elite level can be just what kicks them along
to sort of keep going and chasing their dreams, so
really important, I.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Reckon, it's fantastic. Gave mate. How are you going to
be ready to fall in a heap by Monday? You
must be Buket.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
We've got the top ends here is starting you know,
on the Thursday, so I've got a couple of weeks
in me yet. But yeah, it's been a huge effort
from our team who have worked just tirelessly, I think
on the opportunity and we've got so much great support
either from the community or from the government ant major events,
anti tourism, so many people in the community. As you know,
besting about this place is everyone just pulls together makes
(06:45):
this stuff happen. So we couldn't be more grateful for
all the help we've received to sort of make this
opportunity possible. And now we just want to see two
great nights of sport in the territory and then hopefully
that can weet the appetite to get some more here
in future years.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
Now where can people go if they're wanting to register
for the fan day as well?
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Get to the Anti Cricket website to register for the
Fan Day four point thirty seven on Saturday afternoon down
at the waterfront, and then you know, certainly get to
the Cricket Australia website to snap up those last remaining
tickets for Sunday. But good news easy if you miss
out for Sunday or if maybe you had a great
night and you want to go again, there's still tickets
available for Tuesday night where I think we're roughly around
(07:21):
five thousand for Tuesday, so stell tickets available for Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
Well. INTI Cricket CEEO Gavin Dovey always good to catch
up with you. Thank you very much for your time
and I reckon it's going to be a spectacular a
couple of days. Yeah, lots of lots of excitement, I
think right across the board when it comes to cricket. Great, thanks,
good stuff, Good on you, Gav, thank you,
