Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's talk crickets.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
We know that Australia well has come out on top
in the first international cricket match played in the Northern Territory.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
In seventeen years.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
NT Cricket CEO Gaven Dovey joins me on the line.

Speaker 3 (00:14):
Good morning, gave morning Katie.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Oh mate, how did it go last night?

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Yeah, Well, for anyone who was at the game, they'll
tell you it was an unbelievable night for cricket and
sport in the territory. And yeah the game had everything,
lots of sixers, some great wickets, some incredible catching and yeah,
just just an awesome night, as I said, a sport
in the territory.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Ten thousand fans there to watch that game at Morara Stadium.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
I bet it went off.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Yeah, there wasn't a spare seat in the house, Katie.
It was just an unbelievable atmosphere and Mitch marsh the skip.
He set the tone with smacking the first ball for
six and the crowd went nights and yeah, just just unbelievable.
So great to see territorians and interstate people who traveled
up have a phenomenal night.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
But town was absolutely pumping over the weekend like, there
were so many people around the city, and I know
the Darwin festivals on as well, But how many visitors
do you think you may have had from interstate or
overseas or is it too early to tell?

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Yeah, well, across the two games, we've got about I
reckon you know, somewhere around two thousand inter state and overseas.
I think it was about six hundred Victorians alone that
are traveling up for the game. So yeah, its fantastic
to get these types of international sporting event here because
we just obviously know the impact and I mean the
night last night, dry season August, there's no place in

(01:42):
Australia you'd rather be and so I think just fantastic
to know that people only had a great time at
the stadium. But you know, we've got to see the
best of what Darwin.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Has to offer, absolutely and of course Australia coming out
on top. How like how things looking for the match
on today? Is it sold out yet or have you
still got a few tickets available?

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Yeah, we've gone past the seven k marks, so there
is still a few available. With their moving so fast,
and particularly after the experience people would have had last night,
and I expect that's going to continue to accelerate. So yeah,
the message is still the same. Get onto the crick
Australia website. I get tickets twenty bucks for an adult,
forty for a family pass. I mean, just fantastic price
point and real noticeable thing last night, Katie, which I

(02:27):
think people are talking about is a lot of the
time when you get some of these other sporting events,
uppy people go as in neutral. They may not be
a supporter of one of the two footy scenes. Whereas
last night, you know, when Mitch marsh hit that first
four for six, the entire stadium erupted getting behind the
Aussie So the energy in the atmosphere was very different

(02:48):
and just yet incredible experience would.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Have been electric.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Now, mate, I can't not ask you about not only
action obviously you know that was happening out on the
on the pitch, but we saw, you know, we saw
one of those balls get smashed into the crowd and
one of the Darwin locals, well, I can only assume
he's a dar With local to be that talented. He's
holding two beers, he catches the ball with one hand.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
That was classic Territory got and I think that made
us all pretty proud, to be honest, was left. Yeah
that throws a left hand too, so Shimmy's right hand
got those hands in the right and he just you know,
calm as you like. I think, how how he said
on the commentary just made it look very very easy.
So I think we need to try and pluck him
out of there and get him into our pathway because
he's obviously obviously he can play. So yeah, that was

(03:39):
that was terrific. The great thing of me, that tricket.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
But I was thinking territory and of the month mix
one O four nine territory and of the month for
having that kind of skill. But you know, I also
I also thought to myself, like, you know, eyes from
all over the world watching.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
And then to see that kind of skill in the crowd, Yeah,
it was just great.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
Yeah. Surprised he wasn't drinking it if you caught it,
but but yeah, and to be honest, you know, I
had Mitch Marsh texted me this morning, unprompted, say that
that crowd last night, the atmosphere was amazing, you know,
and they obviously play around the world in a lot
of different crowds, but to sort of hear that from
the players and they absolutely love their time up here,
which which is again, you know, fantastic to hear that

(04:27):
they're really enjoying their time in Darwin. And I think
just the fact we get two games. You know, everyone
would have had a great time last night. There were
kids everywhere, you know, having a ball hanging over the fence,
meet meeting their heroes. And then you know, we get
the chance to do it all again tomorrow and you know,
let's see what happens, but there'll be I expect plenty

(04:47):
more ball flying into the crowd. So old mate that
you mentioned to set the bath, let's see you complete it.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
But you know, that is fantastic as well.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
To hear that the Aussie players absolutely loving the atmosphere,
like that's a really big thing. And you know, when
you look at different teams, different you know, for different
sports coming to the Northern Territory, if the teams enjoy
it and if they get a really good experience out
of it, it does go a long way in terms
of them coming back.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
Absolutely, And I've been on the other end of it,
you know, when I used to tour with the boys,
you know, and you go to different places, you wouldn't
always have a great experience for different reasons. So the
feedback we've got from the South African team is they've
absolutely loved their time here, the facilities of being first class.
They can't quite get their head around the fact that
there's no chance of rain every day. And then the yeah,

(05:42):
as I said, the Aussie boys have absolutely loved it.
A few of them have been here before, but a
lot of them haven't, and they've brought their families and
their kids and it's been terrific here. And they've been
a few of them men out fishing and getting down
the markets, and I think they just they just love
the relaxed nature of the place. And hopefully that all
again comes together and helps us put a case forward

(06:03):
that we think cricket's got a real role to play
here in the future of the territory.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Oh good stuff, Well gave great to speak to you
this morning. Your voice is sounding a bit croaky, mate,
lots of cheering last night.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
I can only assume, yeah, that's right, no drinking for cheering.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Good stuff.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Well, if you can catch the ball like the bloke
in the crowd did holding two beers, we congratulate you
as well.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
Gave. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, I'll do my best.

Speaker 1 (06:27):
Good on you mate.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Lovely to talk to you, Thank you, and all the
best for tomorrow night. I'm sure it'll be another sellout.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
Yeah, fantastic, Thanks Katie, good stuff, Thank you,
