Speaker 1 (00:00):
Just taking you across right now to NT Health's public
health physician, doctor Ashiesh your Dove. Good morning to you, doctor.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Your dove, Good morning, Katie.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Now, I understand that there are concerns at the moment
over the number of flu cases in the Northern Territory.
The latest numbers since August until mid October, there have
been one two hundred and thirty six reported cases in
the territory. Are those numbers the most accurate or where
are things at?

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Yeah, as of now, until yesterday, in this whole year
twenty twenty five, you've had more than four thousand, three
hundred cases in the NT so far, and I admit
that this number of cases is much higher than what
we saw in previous years, especially after COVID, but it

(00:54):
is still under control and it is not an outbreak.
We did see a spike back in July, but then
since August onwards, the cases have been decreasing and the
situation is well in control.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
Right. Well, that is good news that those numbers are decreasing,
doctor Dove. Can you tell us how many people have
passed away as a result of the flu in the
Northern Territory this season?

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yeah, this year we've had fourteen deaths, unfortunately, compared to
ten deaths in twenty twenty four and then thirteen deaths
in twenty twenty three. But that happens like when we
have such high number of cases. But I can ensure
that all these deaths have happened in people aged sixty

(01:45):
years and above, so those people are the ones who
have likely other serious illnesses going on. So yeah, none
of these, none of the deaths have been reported in
anyone less than sixty years.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Doctor Dove, what is your advice for Territorians this morning
when it comes to the flow.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Absolutely, I think what we have always said is just
continue to practice basic hygiene. If you're sick, if you
have the symptoms, if you have a runny nose, tiredness, fever,
sore throat, just stay at home, stay hydrated, and take

(02:32):
take lee from your work. And then yeah, just sometimes
people do get do need some medication, So talk to
your GP in case you're feeling any of those symptoms.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Well, doctor Asheisha Dove, the Northern Territory Health public health physician,
I really appreciate you having a quick chat with us
this morning. It's much appreciated.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Thank you, Thank you, Katie, thank you,
