Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now I tell you what, there's plenty happening when it
comes to hockey in the Northern Territory. We know that
the Grand Finals are happening this weekend, right from the
under thirteens all the way up to the Premier League
as I understand at Marara Hockey Center. But that's not all.
They've then got the combined Malaysia Stingers Team Malaysia Slash Stingers.

(00:21):
I should say I made it sound I'm confused a
matter of airports. I'll in Troy you early and they're
taking on the Black Sticks in a blockbuster international clash
on that same day. Made it is all happening.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Yes, can be a busy weekend, but we're excited.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Well, and I should introduce you the CEO of hockey
here in the Northern Territory, Jason Butcher. Mate. I have
never imagined you to be though, somebody who doesn't go
at things all guns blazing, and it sounds like that's
exactly what's happening this weekend.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
Yeah, look at the Grand Final day is our biggest
day of the year, no matter what it's. Our community supports,
lots of other people coming. It's a massive day all
day and Yeah, Now we book ended it with this unique, special,
crazy game against the iconic Blacksticks.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
So let's talk about that whole day first off before
we talk about what's happening next week as well. So
essentially you've got your finals this weekend Saturday, right from
the under thirteens all the way up to your premis.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Think it's about eight o'clock in the morning, so early
in the morning, we go through all.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
Day all day. How excited is everybody about those Grand Finals?

Speaker 3 (01:29):
As I said, this is the biggest day of the
year for us. Our community love it. They all get out.
We've got a unique situation where Tigers are playing East
in both the men's and women's TPL Grand Finals. So
four o'clock women's games, it's got men's game and then
obviously the Black sits.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
Game at eight o'clock.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
So it's just going to be an exciting pack schedule
all day from early wake up.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
And you'll be the whole day you'll be living at
at the stadium. Now tell me in terms of then
this game that's happening with the Malaysia and the Stingers
team which has been selected to them take on the
New Zealand Black Sticks. Have we ever seen you know,
have we seen a game like that in Darwin before?

Speaker 2 (02:07):
Yeah, I think it's quite unique. Just in general.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
We've got eight Malaysian Development squad boys playing their senior
teams playing in I think it's called.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
The Hero Cup.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
So we've got like their emerging group which is going
to be exciting and nerve wracking for them as well.
And then we've got a fifty player squad which is
for our Malaysian Hockey League campaign and the series against Indonesia,
And essentially we've had to select out of the players available.
We've got a big contingent in Perth all playing finals.
We've got a lot of our strong players playing in
the grand final at six o'clock and so but there's

(02:40):
opportunities for some young guys. And we've brought back a
couple of veterans and we'll park the bus and have
a swing.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Who do we give it a red hot crack? I
love that sounds like me every day in this studio, mate,
me and Chrystal.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
It's a metaphor for the life of hockey.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
Now, tell me, like, who are we keeping an eye
out for in that game?

Speaker 3 (03:04):
I think probably our senior players are going to hold
the young because, as I said, the Malaysian guys are
young as well. They're flying into a foreign country, so
we're going to have to make sure they feel comfortable
and we can just let them show their talent. So
Rob Dugold is one of our great Stingers life member
and he'll be holding it together. And our captain Aiden Parkin,
who's one of our standouts in the Malaysian Hockey League campaigns,

(03:26):
who's one of our senior players, and we've bought back
Jared Lockley hasn't played for the Stingers this decade, so
it is great leader, part of the great Lockley family.
So you know, bring back some of my old boys
who I trusted?

Speaker 1 (03:40):
How good? How good is there Grandad Don? Yes, Oh,
I've known him for years. He is a great fella. Yeah,
and done so much in the community, like for so
many different things. How wonderful. That sounds like it'll be great.
Tell me in terms of then the New Zealand Black
Sticks team, like are they bringing their top notch you know,
the best?

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yes, it's a good segue into the Oceana Cup. Yes,
historic biggest event that hockey's ever held or hosted, if
you like, And it's World Cup qualification. So we're talking
about two teams the top six in the world. It's
not just get to the World Cup, but they're teams
that are trying to win the World Cup. So you know,
we've had some amazing events and some international stuff starting

(04:21):
to come into Darwin. But these are two of the
best teams in the world. And we've got the men
and the women. So four are the best teams.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
In the world. How awesome. And so in terms of
the Oceana Cup, when what day is it kicking off?

Speaker 3 (04:33):
So we have a function on the Tuesday, which is
our launch. They've the Black Sticks men are here now,
so they'll start coming in the next couple of days.
The first game is on Thursday, which I think is
the fourth of September, and that is six o'clock and
eight o'clock and then we have games on Saturday and Sunday,
so it's a three game series. So you've got four

(04:53):
days of action.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
How awesome. So have we got have we got Territorians
young Territorians taking part in the Oceana Cup as.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Well, So it's all about Jeremy Hayward coming home. Yeah right, yeah,
So this.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Is sort of a great bookend to his amazing career
home homegrown boy gets to do something like this at home.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Is he pretty excited about coming here?

Speaker 2 (05:12):
You're super excited?

Speaker 1 (05:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
His brother Leon, who didn't get picked for the Black
Sticks but is still trying to get into that World
Cup group. He'll be playing for the Stingers against the
Black Sticks. So we've got both of them.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
How awesome. I mean siblings like playing sport against each other,
don't they.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
It was pretty unique when you get someone playing for
New Zealand or someone playing against each other. It's very
Jeremy's a drag flicker and Leon's a goalie, so they're
often one on one.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Against the Wow.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Does it get pretty interesting?

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yeah? Well there's always interesting with those.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
Two will They're both phenomenal, aren't they. Yeah, they're good lads,
unbelievably talented and how great to see them play. But
I think it also sort of exemplifies for everybody listening
this morning the kind of talent that we're going to
see on display.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Right, we're talking about some of the best players in
the world hockey.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
Yeah, so can anyone head along.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
To go on?

Speaker 1 (05:55):
What?

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Yep?

Speaker 3 (05:55):
So tickets are reviving go to our website. There's a
pop up screen there. There's an ad in the End
News today as well with a QR code, and we'll
be really ramping up the promotion around how you get
your tickets. Speaking to one of the young maintenance guys,
a Maldi guy this morning, he's going to bring his
family along to.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Support the Blacksticks.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
How good.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
So yeah, we want to get that Australia New Zealand
field and feeling and also get all of our community,
whether you're a hockey fan or not. We don't get
to see events like this in territory very often.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Like Wood, you and I have spoken about, you know,
bringing those sports to the Northern Territory on numerous occasions.
We had Gavin Dove on just a couple of weeks ago,
you know, talking cricket. Yeah, that's exactly right. Like we've
got the motocross that's coming up in September as well.
We're really like we really seem to be punching when
it comes to our sport in the Northern Territory at
the moment and trying to do more in this space.

(06:45):
And I think that it's not only about developing our
juniors and about the sporting opportunities, but it's also like
it is a bit of a tourism opportunity as well.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Yeah, it all ties together and it ties towards that
aspirational piece where kids get to see these people, and
I think of our sports are doing really creative things
to up the ante with that, which is amazing or
kudos to all of us, because we want to uplift sport.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
It's important part of the territory culture.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
But also you know that government and NT major events
called they're backing this stuff, which we're all really grateful for.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
Absolutely, and i'd seen recently as well. I think you
named some of the stingers squats, correct me if I'm wrong.
I saw some fantastic young names in there, some of
the girls that go to athletics as well. I just
think it's wonderful to see them out there.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
We've got some amazing young talent. In the last three years,
as you.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
Know from our journey, we've been really rebuilding hockey and
what we're trying to do is put these this is
the Northern Gateway Initiative, put these events and these opportunities,
so it's not just come and watch hockey, but it's
pathway related and rebuilding the spirit and energy and I
guess the whole hockey machine.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
Yeah. Absolutely well Jason Butcher, CEO of NT Hockey, good
to catch up with you this morning. Good luck for
the next week or so. Mate, got to be busy, busy.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Thanks Katie, grateful as always.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
Thanks
