Speaker 1 (00:00):
So as we know, it is nate Ok Week, which

(00:02):
is a chance for Territorians to celebrate and recognize the history,
the culture, the achievements as well of Aboriginal and Torres
Straate Islander peoples. And earlier this morning, the city of
Darwin held a flag raising ceremony and a breakfast on
Larachia Country, kicking off a week of events and celebrations.
And joining me in the studio is Anti Indigenous Business

(00:25):
Network Advocacy and Membership manager on a deadly Territorian that
I think a lot of people will know, Steve Cardoner,
good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
To you, Good morning Katie, and happy Nadoc Week.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
A Happy Nadoc Week. It is a fantastic time mate.
What does Nadoc Week mean to you?

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Oh? For me, it's about us coming together, mainly our
mob coming together, putting away our differences and walking together,
sharing stories together, sharing the journey of the legacy that's
been built over the fifty years. You know, we've had
those lead in the past that have sent the foundation

(01:02):
now for us to celebrate. What Nadok is now is
the celebration of our culture, families and to the future.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
The card Owners have a very long history in the
Northern Territory. A couple of years back, I was m
seeing the Into Sports Awards and I think, was it
your uncle or your grandfather who was recognized as like
a hall of fame legend for what he had done
in sport, you know, all those years ago and crossing
those boundaries that a lot of people never thought would

(01:31):
be cross.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Absolutely, that was my grandfather, RUBN Cooper. He brought the
AFL to the territory. He was also the first anti
swimming champion. He played water polo, he played cricket. He
was an all rounder and like you said, he said
a legacy of playing the game through the racism and

(01:53):
through all that as well. He created football and brought
football to territory to day's boundaries.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
And I, you know, I love the way that sport
can do that. And I remember as I was reading out,
you know, his history and what he'd done in the
Northern Territory. Even for myself, someone who obviously had never
met him, you know, you feel such immense sort of
like you feel really proud hearing that kind of history
of a territorian.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
Absolutely, and you know, we go to prat Pool and
there is photo his photos there on the wall at
prep Pool standing as the first anti swimming champion and
it's good to say to my daughter's there's your grandfather.
And also on the sport. Away from the sporting side,
him and my nana went up to arnam Land where
they started the sawmill.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Oh wow.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
And this was around the World War two, World War two. Yeah,
And what they did is employed the Aboriginal community to
work with them and was the first ever saw mell
out in Nan.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
How cool that opportunity.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Hey, that's so cool now that you're obviously with the
Indigenous Business Network now and it's kind of you know,
like that real sort of full circle story with that.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
Yeah. I think it's in our family just to help people, yeah,
and help people do better. And that's where with myself
now from a PT now to my long title role
as the Advocacy and Memberships manager is helping ourbriginal businesses
to grow. And that's what we're all at the NTIBN.
We want to advocate for ourbriginal businesses. We want to
watch them grow and support them anyway we can.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Steve.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
What's the theme this year for night Orc Wake.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
This year's theme the next Generation, Strength, Vision and legacy
and like I said, it's it's like taking the legacy
from the last fifty years and putting it into the
next fifty years to be led by our youth.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
Yeah, which is a great thing to do.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
And that's what you want to say, right, we want
to see our youth leading the way. What's planned to
celebrate the milestone because it's fifty years of Nate, Ok,
that's incredible.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Well, the NTIBN we've got a breakfast on tomorrow seven
am at Columbay. We're in almost at full capacity, so

Speaker 3 (04:19):

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Anyone can attend.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
So Culum Bay, what time should they sort of get.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
There, Oh, just before seven seven to nine yester morning,
and it's up there near the turtle end. That's all.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
I know. Awesome And what are you hoping that people
sort of take out of tomorrow's event as well?

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Ah, we've got three amazing youth getting up and speaking.
So it's about everyone, like I said, coming together and
listening to our next generation and let's see what they
can build for us moving forward.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Yeah, that's a great thing to do.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
So three youth getting up and talking, that's that's a
big thing for them to do as well.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Absolutely, in front of probably about one hundred business people. Yes,
So our main facts this year is not on our business,
is on is feeding the youth, empowering the youth to
lead the way for the next generation.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
When we've got some fantastic youth in the Northern Territory.
You know, we very often get kids on the show,
young people on the show teenagers to talk about the
incredible stuff that they're doing. And you know, we've got
incredible sports people, those youths. You've got these you know,
like incredible young people involved you know, in their academia
in different ways, music, art, you name it.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
We've got some awesome young.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
People absolutely, you know, and good credit to the programs
that are in schools right now for the girls and
boys academies. They are showing the way for the planning,
the seeds actually for these youth on what careers they
can take. And that's what that's what's needed in the schools,
which we never had when I was at school. And
it's great to see.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
Hey Steve.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
If anyone's after any further info about the Anti Indigenous
Business Network or any of the great work that you
guys do, where can they go to?

the waterfront.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Very iconic that power, isn't it?

Speaker 1 (06:23):
