Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now, last week we heard from some of the Northern
territories young talented swimmlers who were battling it out at
the World qualifying titles in Adelaide. Well, we are now
set to see twenty two of the Northern Territories masters
swimmers heading off in August for the World Aquatic Masters Championships,
(00:21):
and two of them joined me in the studio right now.
Two of the territories most talented masters. Michelle Coleman, good
morning to you, good morning, lovely to have you in
the studio. And Sandy, Hi, lovely to have you in.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
The studio, good morning, Thank you for having us.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
It is wonderful to have you both in the studio.
I love sport and I love seeing people do sport,
play sport involved in sport of all ages. Now have
I got the youngest and the wisest in the studio
with me this morning?
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Do you think the for the swimming or a bit
of both? For Darwin stingers we've got.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
I think from their twenties right through to their eighties competing.
What's amazing and what I love about masters swimming is
that age is really no barrier. We've got those swimmers
who are in their eighties that just jump in the
pool and do a four hundred meters butterfly like it's
a walk in the park. And it's just so inspiring.
And I just think, if they can do it, well,
(01:21):
why can't we.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
There's no excuse for us, right, there's absolutely no excuse
for us. My father was a swimming coach and he
swam at the Masters on many occasions. But even after
he was diagnosed with cancer, he said, do you know what,
I'm still gonna swim and he still went and swam.
And that's the attitude of our Master's swimmers.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Right exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
Yeah, you continue to give it a go and I
love that. Now, tell me a bit more about the
carnival that you're heading away for, Michelle.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Well, we head off in about seven weeks, exactly seven
weeks today, so we're both competing in a range of events.
For me, it's the fifties ever competed in a World
Masters event. I competed in the Nationals last year because
it was in Darwin, so I'm not really that experienced actually,
(02:09):
but I'm really excited about it. It's just such a
unique opportunity to go and compete on a world stage.
And just give it your best. Try, you know, try
and learn as much as you can as a mature athlete,
and then just give it your best. And I think
it's just a great mental and physical exercise to go through.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Oh absolutely, so, Michelle. What races are you competing in?
Speaker 3 (02:32):
I'm competing in all the fifties, yep. My main focus
is the fifty freestyle. I also enjoy the breaststroke and backstroke.
I'm not quite sure why I've entered the fifty meter
butterfly because I'm not even swimming butterfly at the moment,
but hey, why not?
Speaker 2 (02:49):
Why not? Why not you as well?
Speaker 3 (02:52):
But I love the feeling of I'm still sprinting at
my age, so it's really fun when it feels good.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
It's great, absolutely, And how good to have a goal
and something that you're training for. I think it's fantastic. Sandy,
what are you competing in?
Speaker 4 (03:07):
I'm competing in two hundred preston back and one hundred
preston back.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Wonderful. What's your favorite rest stroke?
Speaker 4 (03:14):
Two hundred? Yes.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Now, in terms of you know, in terms of the
type of people that you're going to be competing against,
what are you expecting, how stiff.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Is the competition going to be Oh.
Speaker 4 (03:25):
I'm quite sure that the competition is going to be
really really stiff. My age group is seventy five to
seventy nine, so that's who I'll be competing against. But
just the magic of competing in the world, I know
it will be a lifetime experience.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
It will be yeah, once in a lifetime. Now, you
ladies told me as you came in this morning as
well that you both actually used to train as juniors
at the Valley in Brisbane many years ago. It's at
different times, but you're both members of the club in
your junior days. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yeah, it's nice to discover that about each other because
we get along really well and have lovely chats at
the pool. We both love our breaststroke. And then just
through this process of going and doing the intervie, we
discovered that we both trained at the Valley this morning
this morning. That was yeah, really, you know, really fond
memories there.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
We have another member in their eighties also that used
to swim at the Valley Swimming Club.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
How incredible.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
It is, so incredible, Like I love seeing people involved
in sport at every age, but honestly, after you know,
going to the Northern Territory Swimming Championships and seeing some
of the people that were swimming in the master's category,
I'm fairly sure there was someone who was either in there,
definitely either in their eighties, possibly even in their nineties.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Would that be correct in national Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Well here in the Northern Territories, yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
We did have competitors in their nineties. We didn't yeat,
we did and it's quite incredible. Yeah, it's actually amazing
to see how they swim in the pool. There was
one lady who got out of the pool onto her walker.
You would have no idea looking at her swimming.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Isn't that so awesome? That is mind blowing. I love that.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
Now, in terms of the training and the preparation that
you're both doing with seven weeks to go, can you
talk me through what you're up to at the moment.
Are you pulling some big kilometers? For me?
Speaker 3 (05:29):
Not so much big kilometers. I'm focusing on strength and
explosivityp you know, forty five, but trying to trying to
find that and it's yeah, it's interesting. So more fifties,
twenty fives and Jim and mobility work for me.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Yeah, awesome, what about you, Sandy.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
Mine is mostly pool work and concentrating on breaststroke and
backstroke rather than freestyle. And look, we have some great coaches.
They're all different, but you all benefit from their advice.
And so we're swimming under a coach and at the
moment it's the pointy end, so we're doing a lot
(06:13):
of sprint work, etc. And I think now I'm swimming
six days a week rather than five.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
How awesome.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Yes, what's it been like for you both as well?
After swimming as junior is maybe having a bit of
a break and then coming back to swimming.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
What's that been like or did you ever have a
break Sandy?
Speaker 4 (06:33):
A huge break?
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Oh? Did you so many years to have?
Speaker 4 (06:36):
Well, I'm seventy four at the moment, and I guess
I was swimming until I was maybe thirteen.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
And then when did you restart?
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Well only recent seven years ago with Darwin stingers.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
How cool.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
But once you learn to swim.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Yes, seven life you can.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
You can.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Literally, it is a skill that you've got for life.
That's right, That's so incredible. What about you, Michelle?
Speaker 3 (06:59):
I was just going to think. I think it's interesting
because as adults you go into the exercise or the sport.
Because you have a goal, you.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Want to do it.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
No one's making you do it exactly, so it's quite
it's quite different and great like that. But yeah, we
do have some amazing coaches that really support and help
us through technique, through our fitness, through our dives, and
they just go above and beyond to help us. So
we're really lucky, very lucky. We've got a great club,
(07:31):
the Darwin Stingers, and there are other clubs that are
competing in the World's as well, the Darwin Buffalo's.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
Yes, yeah, yeah, And we're getting some race practice now
every carnival that comes up. Yep, we're competing in just
to get that race practice.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
How wonderful. Good on you ladies. Now, have you got
any specific goals for the carnival or are you just
going across and having a crack and see how you
go or would you like to come home with a
with a medal.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
I don't think there's much chance. My goal is I
do have a goal time, but it's honestly to have
a good time, that's my goal, and to have a
good experience in the race for it to actually feel
as good as it can physically. In my body and
(08:24):
that's actually my goal.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
How awesome. And what about you, Sandy.
Speaker 4 (08:28):
Oh, look, it's going to be a life experience and
just like magic, So I'll be just hoping to do
personal best and just having the camaraderie of other Australians.
I think there's maybe two or three hundred Australians altogether
going over so and just the comaraderie and meeting other
(08:49):
people friendships. The motto of the Master's Swimming is friendship,
fitness and fun.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
How wonderful.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
And do you know what I love as well about
people of all ages swimming, whatever your sport is, is
you know your children, watching your grandchildren, watching the pride
they must feel. But also you're setting such an example,
you know, for everybody around you as well, that it
doesn't matter what age you are, you can have those goals.
You can go overseas and be competing at a carnival.
(09:19):
What a wonderful thing to be demonstrating to everybody around you.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
I agree.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
It's just that exercise doesn't end when you're a parent,
you're a grandparent. It continues and just continues to be
part of the joy and health of life no matter
where you're at Hey.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
If anybody's listening this morning and they're thinking, do you
know what I want to be part of the Darwen
Stingers Masters Swimming Club.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
What can they do? Where can they have a look?
Speaker 3 (09:44):
They can head onto the Darwenstingers Facebook and Instagram pages.
They can contact us there, or there's also the Masters
Swimming NTE pages. Yeah, we will definitely respond.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
They can get involved, or they can just come down
to the pool on your Tuesday Thursday currently at eight o'clock,
but after next week it'll be eight thirty in the morning, thirty, yes,
and there'll be coaches there and swimmers there and just
come and have coffee with us.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Wonderful stuff, ladies, all the very best. I might catch
up with you before then anyway, but all the very best.
I hope that you smash those goals and we can't
wait to hear how you go while you're away. Thank
you so much for having Thank you wonderful to speak
to you both. Michelle Coleman and of course Sandy Hide
