Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, we know there's plenty happening when it comes to
swimming in the Northern Territory. And what is some very
exciting news is that our Australian Dolphins are heading north
for one last camp on Australian soil before they jet
off to Singapore. It is part of the preparation for
the World Aquatics Championships which is taking place this month
(00:21):
and it's going to see Territorians able to get in
the water and swim with Australia's some off Australian swimming's
biggest names now joining us on the line to tell
us a little bit more. It's nt swimming CEO Warren Dobson,
Good morning to you.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Warren, Morning Katie, how are you again?
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Really good mate? Tell us a little bit more about
who's coming to Darwin as part of this preparation.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Well, all the Australian Dolphins are coming at some point
with the World Championships obviously is that are in Singapore
and so yeah, it starts through the open water guy.
So they're actually arriving on Sunday this week and they'll
be training up in Darwin up until the twelfth and
that's where you're going to have the opportunity to swim
(01:06):
with those Australian open water swimmers out at the waterfront
on Wednesday. How good.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
So that's happening this coming Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Isn't it this coming Wednesday? The nights? Yes? Do you
have to be.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
An elite swimmer to go along?
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Warrant?
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Or can anybody go and take part? Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Look, everyone can come down and have a meet and
greet with the swimmers. The whole team will be there,
the coaches will be there to be able to jump
into the swimmers. They're going to do a lap around
the aqua park, so you've got to be able to
confidently do that. But you do have to register. Obviously
they are in the middle of preparations for the World Champs,
so we can't push them too hard and have three
(01:45):
hundred odd people down there wanting to go for a swim,
So you do have to register.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
No, which is fair enough. I think that's a good
thing to do. So anybody out there listening, that's keen.
It kicks off Wednesday and that is going to be happening.
Is it three? Or get there at two o'clock in
the RVO and then the swim.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
At three thirty yeah, so the squad will be there
from about one point thirty to do their sort of
pre workout and then then they're jumping in to do
a training session for an hour and a half and
then the community swims from three point thirty to.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Four o'clock and what else can we expect then over
the coming sort of weeks, is there going to be
further training sessions happening or further swimmers coming here?
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Absolutely? So the entire pool teams are heading up for
the following Saturday, so on the twelfth, So that's all
the name swimmers that people would recognize from all the
Olympics and World Championships of sort of past years gone by.
But so they'll be up for almost a couple of
weeks from the twelfth to about the well, I think
(02:50):
they're leaving around the twenty third before they head over
to Singapore. And they're having a community day on the
nineteenth as well, which is a Saturday down at prap
Pool where everyone's available to come in and meet them,
get some selfies, have some autographs. We'll be having a
barbecue on the morning. So yeah, it'll be a big
(03:11):
community today.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
How good, now, Warren, where if people are listening this
morning and they're thinking, oh, my kids would be so
keen to get along, or maybe they're part of the
swimming community and they really want to come along. Where's
the best place for them to get a bit further info.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
So we are putting some stuff out on social media,
so if you join up or have a look for
the Swimming and te Facebook page or Instagram page, the
information will be on their Swimming Australia are also promoting
it on their socials as well, so there'll be some
information up on our website. So yeah, there's plenty of
places to be able to find it, but they're the
(03:47):
main dates of the open water dates. Wednesday the night
where you can jump in with the swimmers, and then
for the pool guys, that's the nineteenth.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Hey, and we know as well that we've now seen
it has been approved that you guys are going to
be able to construct that new facility at per Rap
as well. After the community consultation it seemed as though
the large majority of territories were absolutely happy for this
to go ahead. How excited is the swimming community about this?
Speaker 2 (04:18):
It's going to be really beneficial for the swimming community.
The you know, it's basically it's our going to be
our legacy piece in the lead up the Brisbane Olympics,
having that there for all of our swimmers and just
you know, quite exports across the border. It'll be for
the triathlons and Masters and all those sorts of guys
as well. We're going to be able to have access
(04:38):
to it. But it's it's a huge benefit to have
that right at the pool, to be able to sort
of run all of our development camps as well as
attracting the hot water sort of training camp seemed to
be the way of the future now. So people want to.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Are we see.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
People, Yeah, that's the thing.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
The elite swimmers are wanting to come to the Northern Territory.
If you want warm water, We've got it here in
the end day, don't we.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Well I was in Melbourne over the weekend and not
going to assure you, I was wishing I was in Darwin.
We had a we had a camp on last week
where we had you know, about eighty odd kids running
around in the middle of winter in shorts and no
shirts or you know whatever on caall deck. And the
(05:27):
comments that I've got from all the people in the
Southern States are that's just crazy exactly we were able to
do that. It's a great environment, it is, it really is.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Well it sounds as though it's going to open doors
up for us as well. I would imagine, you know,
when you're talking about Australian swimmers coming to the top end,
if we have got that facility that you know, once
it opens or once it's constructed, that that will also
make a big difference.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Absolutely. We've filded plenty of questions from high performance squads
all around the country regarding when it's going to be
ready to go, and I think it's going to be
a real dryly end sort of thing for them when
they are able to come up and train in the
winter and in and outdoor pool have the facilities right there.
We've also obviously fielded a lot of interest from in
(06:15):
the state people as well as international people. Have had
a few national teams sort of reach out and talk
to us about the lead up to the Olympics and
thirty two as well. So that's good. It was. It's
garnering a lot of interest around the world and you know,
having all these high performance sports people come to the
NT and you know it's I think sport at the
(06:37):
moment in the NT is really kicking some goals, so
it's really great to be a part of.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Yeah, I agree with you and our swimmers are doing
fantastically well, Lauren. Always good to catch up and find
out what is happening when it comes to swimming in
the Northern Territory. Mate, thanks so much for your time.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Thanks Katie, there's plenty on and yeah, thank you keeping.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
You busy, no doubt about that. Good only Lauren, thank
you
