Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now have you been watching the swimming in actually in
Adelaide this week. Some of Australia's finest swimmers battling it
out this week to earn selection for this year's World
Aquatic Championships. But what you may not have known is
that four incredible Territorians have been competing at the event.
(00:20):
Joining me on the line right now is the Darwin
Buffs head coach Tim fu. Good morning to.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
You, Tim, Good morning Katie and I think you've got.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
All the swimmers there as well, do you, Tim, or
at least a couple of them.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
I've got two of them. I've got James and Sarah.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Yeah, oh well Tim, before I talked to them made.
How has it been going? This is a massive event,
the Australian Swimming Trials. Talk us through it. How's it
been going? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Really good so far. So we've got four of them
down here. James and Maybe have both been to a
trials event before. They were both at the Olympic Trials
last year. For young Bailey and Sara, this is the
first Trials event so so far we've had some good results.
Sara actually walked away with a bronze medal in her
fifty breaststroke from Tuesday night I think it was. Yeah,
(01:11):
We've had Macy in the B final of the fifty
back on Monday night, and then we've got coming up
Macey's about to do a two hundred backstroke this morning,
Star's got a hundred backstroke and then James has a
big fifteen hundred on Friday night.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Now, mate, tell us a little bit about the caliber
of competition that is at this event because for some
of our listeners, you know, it sounds like it's a
massive event, obviously trialing for the world chance, but talk
us through the caliber of people competing at this carnival.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Oh, it's the best of the best in not only
Australia but in the world. So the whole selection aspect,
he is for the World Championships. That's both para and
able bodies to go to Singapore later this year, so
both all three sections of the Australian team will actually
be up in and before they go to Singapore for
the World Championships.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
So it's love for the power guys. We actually had
a world record broken last night by one of the
Power of fifty backstroke men. Yeah, so that's its top
of the world quality that they're racing now.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
It is so cool. I think it's and I just
think it's incredible that we've got these young territorians there.
Maybe I might jump across and have a talk to
James if you reckon, he's ready.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
And he's key ready, absolutely here he is.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
How are you, James?
Speaker 3 (02:34):
I'm good?
Speaker 2 (02:35):
How are you?
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Jade?
Speaker 1 (02:36):
Very good? Mate. Now you have been racing in what
many would consider the most grueling races. I think at
these trials, the four hundred, the eight hundred, and the
fifteen hundred meter freestyle. Have you competed in all of
your races already? James?
Speaker 3 (02:51):
No, so I've done the four hundred freestyle and the
eight hundred free star. I've got my fifteen hundred tomorrow night.
It'll be quite eight, probably around nine ten thirty.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
Now tell me, how did how have you gone in
the four and the eight hundred of your swam many pbs?
Speaker 3 (03:09):
No, I haven't saw many pbs yet, which is slightly disappointing.
But I haven't been far off my best times yet.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
So not all bad, No, absolutely not. I mean it's
a fantastic opportunity for you there. What's it? You know,
what's the competition been like, and have you swum at
that facility in Adelaide before?
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Yeah? So I had swam here in Adelaide twice before,
once in twenty twenty with the South Australian Country champ
yeap and then once in twenty twenty two. I think
it was at the Age national competition that was held here.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
So fifteen hundred is next a little later tomorrow night.
Did you say?
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Yes, that's right.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
What are you hoping for in the fifteen hundred? Is
it your pet event? Is it your favorite?
Speaker 3 (03:57):
It is, which is a bit strange to say because
it's the longer the film it sucks the most. I
really enjoy it. I like am able to get myself
in a rhythm, which is always nice. And yeah, I
just I find it nice and come or not comfortable
but easy to swim.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
So what kind of what's your what's your best time
in your fifteen hundred meters free style?
Speaker 3 (04:22):
I think it's a fifteen minutes thirty six seconds something
like that.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
Wait, that is incredible like that, you know to a
lot of people listening this morning, like you know, swimming
that I'm assuming that works out around what a minute
per one hundred meters consecutively then for fifteen hundred meters
like that's that is so fast?
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Yeah, it's about a one or two page one hundred,
so yeah, it's incredible stuff.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
What are you hot?
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Like?
Speaker 1 (04:49):
How how fast are you hoping to go tomorrow night?
Speaker 3 (04:55):
I'd like to go about a fifteen twenty five something
like that. Yep, somewhere in that region would be. Yeah,
I'd be really really happy with that.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Oh mate, we will all be cheering for you and
hoping that you are able to do that. Thank you
very much for having a chat with me this morning.
I might have a chat to Tsara if she's there.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
And Keene yep, all good enough.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Now, thank you sir, you mate? Are you there, Sarah?
Speaker 4 (05:22):
Yeah, I'm here.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Oh, lovely to talk to you this morning. Now, Sarah,
talk me through what you're racing in while you're away
there at the trials.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
I've been racing in. I've raced four hundred free change
and I am fifty breast shirt so far and m
fifty free style and how have you done? I went
pretty well. My fifty rest shirt was probably one of
the most memorable swims I'd say, because I got third.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
That is so good. Now talk me through. So, so,
which category are you in at the at the trials?
Speaker 4 (06:02):
I'm in the category which is S six. Yeah, and
that's the like short stature.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
Yeah. And so Sarah, tell me what are you like?
What are you hoping for with your events that you've
got that you've still got left to swim?
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Are you?
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Are you hoping to pick up another medal?
Speaker 4 (06:24):
I hope so, But there's pretty like hard swimmers in
the pool to race again?
Speaker 2 (06:30):
Yep?
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Yeah, how hard is that competition? Has it been? You know,
like you're talking the best of the beast, aren't you?
Speaker 4 (06:39):
Yes, it's hard.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
What an incredible opportunity for you?
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Though?
Speaker 1 (06:44):
Are you loving it because this is your first time,
isn't it? At the at the trials? Is that right?
Speaker 4 (06:50):
Yeah? It's it's it's pretty good. Like it's a really
good experience and opportunity to take to come here.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
It truly is, Sarah. I think you should be so
proud of yourself as all of as all four of
you should be doing incredibly well. What's the ultimate goal
for you? Are you hoping that you do qualify for
the for the World Champs? What are you hoping for?
Speaker 4 (07:18):
I'm just hoping, like just this I'm good and to
try my best, I guess.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
Yeah, Oh that is so good, Sarah. It's lovely to
speak to you this morning. All the best for your
remaining races. Thank you, Thank you so much. And I'm
not sure if we've got Tim there still we might
wrap up with coach Tim if he is there. Thanks Sarah. Yeah,
and well Tim, you must be proud of her mate.
They're doing very well.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
Oh absolutely not. Just just to get to this kind
of a level and this kind of a meeting itself
with such an achievement and let alone to go out
there and actually try and take on the best in
the country and the world. It's a bit daunting some
of the times for them, but they step up and
do what they can, so hopefully it just helps inspy
some of the other younger kids coming through the system
(08:06):
and any sport they want that you just got to
put the work in and who knows what the feeling is.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
Yeah, spot on, it's so good. Like I love seeing
our young Territorian's doing so well and swimming at the moment,
you guys are doing awesomely.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
Yeah, look, I can't complain too much. The kids have
definitely raised the bar not only for themselves but just
for their teammates as well. So we're definitely in a
very good place at the moment. It's just a matter
of building on it and seeing where we can get to.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Yep, I will Tim lovely to speak to you this morning,
lovely of course, as well to speak with James and Sarah.
Thank you so much for taking some time to have
a chat with us.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Not a problem, Thank you
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Kanks mate, thank you
