Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now, there is always plenty to discuss in this studio.
But yesterday I got a message that came through and
it said, Katie, I just wanted to let you know
that we've got girls heading across to Japan to play
rugby union and it's a fantastic achievement and you know,
are well done to everybody involved. And I thought to myself,
(00:20):
well I read that message, I thought, well, why don't
we get these girls in the studio because I want
to find out a little bit more about how they
got selected, who they're going to be playing and all
the good stuff. And I'm pleased to say that some
of them join me in the studio right now. So
from Palmerston Rugby Union Club, I've got Megan Barker and
Cassidy Cassidy White, Good morning to both of you, goodring girls.
(00:46):
And then I have got Emma Healey from the Darwin Dragons.
Good morning Emma. It's so great to have all of
you in the studio. And I will also say that
I've got the Palmeston Rugby Union Clubs well president as well,
Jacob Brandt. Jacob will how are you this morning? Mate?
Great to have you in the studio as well, now, girls,
(01:06):
first off, tell me which age group are you? What? Well,
how old are you?
Speaker 2 (01:13):
I'm sixteen? And the other girl who's not here right now,
she's on a school camp, Peyton.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
So that's Peyton. So Peyton's also selected, but she obviously
is on a school camp. So you guys are sixteen?
Now what about you two?
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Eighteen?
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Yeah, we're both both eighteen, so you're heading across. How
did you get selected to go across to play in Japan?
Speaker 4 (01:36):
Well, we did last year. We did the Brisbane Pacific
Youth Festival YEP, with like all Nations and the same
United Yeah Nations, United North Queensland. We first joined up
with them because they reached out to us and then
(01:57):
we did that comp and so they've kind of reached
out again this year to do another comp, but instead
in Japan.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
How cool. So you must have played well, like you
obviously played fantastically then to get selected to go across
and play in Japan. Is this like the first time
for some of you that you're going overseas? Yeah? Yeah
for me it is a rugby year.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Yeah yeah for rugby yea.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
How exciting? So who, like, who are you actually going
to be playing for? Are you playing for Australia or
is it like a regional Australia team.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
We're playing for a team called Nations United North Queensland.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
And the black founder, I guess of the club. She's
a mum of a lot of girls. She actually got
me inter rugby, like originally yeah, and she's like, doesn't
like how there's not a lot for girls, so especially
in the top end area like North Queensland and Northern Territory.
So she's really trying to boost rugby up here.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
How awesome. I love like I you know, I speak
about this often. I love seeing young people do good stuff,
but I love seeing young women then playing sports that
sometimes people may not actually expect that you're playing. Now,
what position do each of you play in rugby union?
Speaker 4 (03:10):
For when we go over there, I'll be playing flanker,
hooker and I think lock.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Awesome, so pretty tough, pretty physical. What about you, Megan,
I've got.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Lock and flanker down back. Could you anywhere in that forward?
Speaker 1 (03:26):
You give it all a crack? What about you, Emma?
Speaker 2 (03:29):
I'll be playing flanker, lock and center.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Wow, So you girls are physical like you are going
to be having a real crack. How much do you
love playing rugby union? But how exciting is it to
get an opportunity like going overseas to play?
Speaker 2 (03:43):
Yeah, it's good.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
I really enjoyed, like last year's and also all the
just like the NT trips for the union. Yeah, and
I've been playing for a long time, So how long
you've been playing? Maybe since I think under fives or
under seven's real?
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Yeah, really excited. Do you come from a rugby union family?
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Is?
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Oh, you just somehow got involved.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
We kind of follow it, but I think my mum
just put me and my brother down for it when
we were young, and we just stuck with it.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
That's awesome. I love that. And now look at you
going over like going overseas, that's so cool. And what
about you meeg And I know I've interviewed you before
before the Grand Final last year. You obviously love your
foot eye. You must be excited to be hitting across
out like you're juggling that as well with school obviously.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Yeah, I'm keen. I'm like super excited for it, Like
it's just an opportunity that I didn't think i'd get.
But it's pretty cool, especially being under the coach. We
have because she was she captain Samoa back in the nineties,
so she's like played in the World Cup. She's got
a lot of knowledge and I'm keen to learn that.
And that's what I want to learn is from her
(04:50):
and just how she would play and how she wants
me to play.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Yeah, that's wonderful. Yeah, I reckon, it'll be so exciting.
And what about you, Emma, you must be pumped to
me going away.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Yeah, and I'm obviously part of the younger groups. We're
not only going to learn from the older girls, but
like seeing how the university's are over there play yep,
and then knowing so like when I get older, when
I start moving forward with it, like the opportunities that
could open up for me.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
So when do you all head off?
Speaker 3 (05:16):
The seventeenth, sixteenth sixteen to Cans and the seventeenth we're
heading over to Japan.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
How awesome? How long are you there for? And do
you know how many games you're going to be playing?
Speaker 3 (05:27):
We have twelve days we're there. We got three games
so eating girls aversing the university teams, while our sixteens
versing the high schools that are attached.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
How good? Now, tell me, has it taken a heap
of fundraising because I know that going overseas to play
any sport or going into stage even is so expensive,
you know a lot of the time to try and
raise the money to go away. How has that been going.
Have you been doing some fundraising? Yeah, we've done.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
I think we've got a payton sip and we've also
I think on Saturday, this coming Saturday, we've got a
car wash at FX Fuel in Palmiston. Yeah, so we'll
be all down there doing that.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
Twenty bucks a car wash.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
Love us.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
No, I was gonna say, encourage.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
It gets done really well. We did it last weekend.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Yeah, so twenty bucks. What day, Saturday? Saturday? What time
do people need to be there? Nine till one, nine
till one. Alright, I'll try and get out there. I
reckon and get my car washed. That's fantastic, you know,
I think it's awesome that you ladies are getting the
opportunity to go overseas and play rugby union at that level,
and you know the experience that you get from it,
(06:39):
both on and off the field is just wonderful to see.
And then all that fundraising, you know, everything that you
do in the lead up. It's just such a great
life experience, such a wonderful experience. Now do you have
like anywhere else If people can't get out there to
get their car washed, is there any other way that
they can potentially support you.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yeah, so we are still looking for black sponsors and stuff.
But also we've got a painting set.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
So a lady like my mum's friend, she's coming up.
She's gonna like bring a bunch of canvases. It's fifty
dollars ahead, yep. And that involves you paint an abstract
sunset I think. And it involves drinks for the night
and a security board.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
How wonderful, good stuff. So if they is this, they
can probably jump on the club's Facebook page, do you
reckon and to get that info Jacob.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Yeah, we'll be sharing everything.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
If anybody wants to donate anything or get involved, then
absolutely reach out to us and we we can head
it off to the right people.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
Oh well, how good girls. Congratulations on the fact that
you're going over to Japan to play and being selected,
I reckon, it's just wonderful. Hope you have the best time.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
Thank you, thank you.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
It has been wonderful to talk to you this morning.
Thank you for coming in and telling me more about it.
Thank you, thank you, good on your girls. Thank you,
