Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, Ice Hockey Australia has announced the national team roster
for the upcoming Women's Power World Championships happening in Slovakia
in August, and in what is some very exciting news,
a Territorian has made the team. Now the squad showcases
a mix of experience, emerging talent and representatives from five
(00:23):
states and territories, highlighting the growing reach and inclusivity of
women's para ice hockey in Australia. And joining me in
the studio is para ice hockey player Sonya Numa. Good
morning to you.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Mate.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
I'm very excited. I'm like, this is the coolest thing. Ever,
how did you make the Australian ice hockey team.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Yeah, it's a bit crazy coming from Darwin. Hey, that's
about I love the most about it, I know, right
and rural Darwin at that, so no, look, it's an
amazing opportunity. I did a lot of work with Invictis
Games back in twenty seventeen twenty eighteen. From that, I
(01:14):
made some friends in the sporting community worldwide, and yeah
I got a contact after that sort of finished, and
one of the laters from Canada, from the Canadian team
messaged me and said, look, we're really trying to build
this sport and we really wanted to become an Olympic sport,
so can you help us out, Like, let's get at
(01:35):
building in Australia. Little did we know that it already
was kind of bubbling under the surface. Yeh, dip my
feet in or my foot in and it's it's amazing.
I wouldn't look back. It's such a crack.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
And sport how cool? What so was that the sport
that you were playing when you're at the Invictor skate?
Speaker 2 (01:54):
No wheelchair, basketball, swimming, a volleyball.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
So you're good at everything. Basically, you're all round.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
I just enjoy sports. I enjoy being active, and look,
I'll give anything a crack. And I've got two younger kids,
so I just wanted to show them that, you know,
like a few things in my life are different now,
you know, with my ambitation and that body hasn't doesn't
stop you from getting out and enjoying life and living
and doing some things that you know, whatever, if you
(02:27):
get an opportunity to come your way, don't don't you know,
don't pass it up. You've got to grab it. Hey,
that's it.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
You've got to grab it with both hands and get
into it. So how are you training for ice hockey?
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Yeah, well we've I've got sleds up here. Yeah, it's
sleds on ice and anybody google it because it's amazing.
It's full contact, so it is really hardcore. Nothing's off limits,
which can be a bit scary at times, but it's fantastic.
But like a lot of just fitness, core training because
(03:03):
you need to be able to get yourself back up
because you do come out of the sled a lot
or not out but fall off. And a lot of
core training and general fitness. And yeah, Jeff down at that.
I think he's been amazing. He lets me slot in
there on Saturdays and Sundays and training sessions. But we're
also looking to get some more training sessions in there
(03:24):
for proper team events. So need some more people to train.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Yeah, which is fair enough. So Sonia, tell me where
are like with the players in the team, Like, where
are they from? Are they from all around Australia?
Speaker 2 (03:37):
They are? Yeah, No, We've literally got We've got people
from Newcastle, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Brisbane. We had a training
camp in Newcastle. The first week of June and that
was a selection camp for the team and it was
just phenomenal to see the skill and the passion and
the drive that some of these ladies have. So it's
(04:00):
a it's a real it's real shot and arm to
be picked and if you're part of it all, to
be honest, yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
It must be. What was your reaction when you got
that call, when you know, when they called you and said, hey.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
It's a bit it's unreal. Yeah, you need to think that,
you know, Like, I mean, it's not like we have
this in our backyard and everything else. But I just
I love the idea of it being, you know, showing
people that whatever, even whatever you think is out of reach,
is still reachable if you if you put things in
place to make it happen.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
And you know what an awesome frame of mind you've got.
But I don't, you know, I just think to approach
life in that way, and you know you touched on
before obviously your amputation and then you know, when an
opportunity presents itself, taking that opportunity and running with that,
(04:54):
go on with that. You know. I just think that's
such like it is such a great way of looking
at life.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Thank you appreciate it. Yeah, kind of for me, I
feel like there's no other way. That's just what you do,
you know.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Yeah. Now, in terms of your preparations, when your head
overseas talk me through some of that.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Yeah, well, I mean, now, there's it's a lot of
it's a lot of training and the hardest one for
us to do is to do a lot of the
stick work and get rid of, you know, get used
to chasing the puck because obviously that's you know, a
big part of it. A lot of that will be
done on synthetic ice at home and just under because
(05:40):
you pass underneath the the slurd and stuff like that,
so that'll be hand eye coordination and anything that does that.
On top of that, I'm trying to get some ice
tyme at the Darwin Ice Hockey Center. It all costs money.
It also costs a lot of money to get over
to Slovakia in the first place. The whole team has
(06:01):
to raise our whole team funds and flights and accommodation
and fold and all of that.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
So you're doing quite a bit of fundraising at the moment.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
We have just hit the around running. Since he got
announced yesterday. We've got until the eighteenth of August, which
is the day we leave.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
So I mean, anybody out there listening this morning, who's going?
Do you know what? Sonya? You sound like an awesome
person and I'm keen as to support you. Have you
got a link up yet or is it still sort
of still.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
We're still very scratchy. If you could do a search
on the Australian Sports Foundation just for Sonya Newman, Sonya
with a wife, that should come up. Failing that, I
know that the awesome Michael Horn has put a link
up on the Reeling Veterans Facebook page, so that's an
easy one to find. Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Well, and I know he's supportive. I reckon all the
other all the other veterans and even though Servings still
would be really bloody proud of you and be thinking
what an awesome thing that you are set to in
bark On.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Yeah, thank you. I just I like the idea of
highlighting sport as a way to move forward when things
can be challenging. Yeah, do you know.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
I love sport. I love it for so many reasons
and I say that very often on the show. But
your approach I just think's incredible and I know people
listening this morning will feel exactly the same. So just
remind us what date exactly are you heading overseas and like,
how are you feeling about do you reckon? Some of
these other teams are going to be rough as.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Oh absolutely so, oh yeah, nervous. We leave Australia on
the eighteenth of August, and then we have a sixty
training prior camp in Poland and then yeah, we get
to Slovakia and the twenty third of August. I think
(07:51):
through till the twenty six He's a competition.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
So it's all of it.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Yeah, and the teams USA and Canada they've been playing,
you know. I mean some of these people have been
playing since the babies, so they're going to go hard. Yeah,
they're not going to take it easy on us, so
you know, but we've got Norway, as I said, Usa, Canada, Norway,
(08:16):
good you others yeahs.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
Sonya, you are going to have to keep us up
to date while you're away, Okay, we're going to need
some updates to find out how it's going. Once again,
a massive congratulations to you. You send us that link
so we can let our listeners know where they can
jump online as well and support you if they're keen.
But a huge congratulations of course on making the ice
hockey Australian team, the power Australian team. I just think
(08:44):
it's so cool. I can't believe that we've got an
ice hockey player across to the World Champs. I reckon,
it's amazing.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
Good on you, Thank you
Speaker 1 (08:52):
Thanks so much for your time this morning.
