Now, last week we spoke to the organizers of the
take Back the Track event in Central Australia. It suffered
a blow after some who attended were allegedly indecently touched
while at that event. Now, the event was about women's safety,
with funds being raised to buy personal safety alarms. Joining
us on the line is the Running and Walking Club

president in Alice Springs, Katie Stroud. Good morning, Katie, good morning.

How are you going?

Yeah, really good, lovely to have you on the show now, Katie,
the event was all about taking back the Track. Last
week we spoke to morgana. She told us it was
seriously hampered after a group were there doing the wrong thing.
How are the women going who were impacted at that event?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Look, I've had a chat with a couple and I
think this particular group it was children and young teenagers
and we understand that perhaps they don't understand the ramifications
of what they did. But luckily one of the participants
called the kids aside and had to chat and explain

to them that this impacts people when you do that
and it's not the right thing to do. So, yeah,
it's a bit of a difficult one to get your
head around. But yeah, they're doing all right.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
I'm pleased to hear that they are doing okay. I
know like it must have. You know, that's the last
thing you wanted to happen when you organize this fantastic event,
like you just think, oh my goodness, devastated.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
For days, I couldn't run around the river until yesterday,
I couldn't say that was just a bit grumbly.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Yeah, So how has it been over the last couple
of days. You just said, you know, you went for
a run yesterday. Was it did you feel like it
was a bit safer?
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Well, actually, the area between the underpath and the Planet gardens,
I noticed there were three mobile CCTV units from the police.
So the police have really come on board of us
and we're going to have speaking to them Friday. And yeah,
that's brilliant.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
That's good to hear. So you've got those mobile units there.
That means I mean that you can hopefully go for
a run and not have to worry about anybody trying
to do anything.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
To Yeah, and that's Scott. It's a little bit scary
because you don't have a road clost by. So I'm
really happy that they picked up on that scot being
a bit of a bit of a danger for women.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Now, Katie, the whole reason I wanted to talk to
you this morning was to find out how the fundraising
efforts went, because you guys were trying to raise money
to buy those personal safety alarms. How did it go? On?
Speaker 2 (02:43):
My goodness, five eighty two dollars? Who So we purchased
two hundred and forty two personal safety alarms and we
donated the remaining twenty dollars forty to Women's Safety Services
of Central Australia.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Oh brilliant you that's fantastic. So tell me again how
many alarms was it able to purchase?
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Two hundred and forty two? And we've been talking to
victims of crime. They might have a service twenty to
throw into the mix, so I'll have a chat with
them next week. And yeah, how good and.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
How women feeling, you know, finding out that you've been
able to raise that money and that they're going to
be able to get those personal safety alarms.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
From what I've had, everyone is just so please. You
know it's something small, but it can just mean so much.
I've carried a one personally around me to probably like
the past eight years and it's just a little sentence
extra sense of security there. If something does happen like
it can make it a very loud noise and justtraw
a chance in or to tract someone away from me.
(03:47):
So yeah, just another tool in the box.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Yeah, absolutely, well, and look, I think it's so important
that you are all able to get out there to
go for a run, to feel safe when you go
for a run.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
You've like that, right, And we have such amazing women
who are conquering amazing things out that, like they're running
anywhere between twenty to one hundred kilometers a witch and
a lot of that's probably a majority that's solo. So
we need to feel fast to be able to do
these amazing things we want to do.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Yeah, that's spot on your spot on, Katie. Have you
got any running events coming up? Oh?
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Do I ever?
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Running? We've got a Larapinage trail on Saturday. The ten
dollars from every entry is going towards the traditional landowners
towards trial maintenance. And we've got a welcome to country
from some lovely ladies when we're gonna so yeah, Emily
Dessin's Scout beautiful. And then we have the Running Festival,

so if you want to do a ten k half
marathon marathon, we've got some generous cutoffs, so wonderful you
got to go.

I love going for a run. I know so many
of our listeners do, and I'm really pleased to hear
that you're able to raise that money as well for
