Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, we've got a full weekend. When it comes to
sport and the Darwin Salties wheelchair basketball team, they are
in Sydney for the national titles. As I understand it,
they are going to be hoping, well, they're certainly hoping
to defend their title. Their first game is tonight and
if they win, the team will then go on to

(00:21):
compete in the Sunday Grand Final. Now joining us on
the line is their coach Tracy York. Good morning Tracy,
Good morning Katie.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
How are you?

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Oh so good?

Speaker 1 (00:32):
How is the team looking? You guys have arrived in Sydney.
You're all settled in ready to get on the court today.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Yeah, that's right. No, we arrived last night. We actually
just finished what we call a shoot around or a
light session on the court today that we're going to
play on tonight. So yeah, we're all ready to go.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
So looking to defend your title, but you've got to
get through this knockout match first, is that correct?

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Yeah? That's right. I mean, if the loser tonight gets
to play tomorrow, do you again, they have to win
tomorrow to play Sunday. So either way, if you win tonight,
you I guess get a rest day tomorrow and you
play Sunday. If you don't, we play through a game
tomorrow and then for Sunday for a chance to play Sunday.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
How pumped are you? How pumps the team? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (01:19):
No, yeah, we're definitely pumped. The guys really professional group,
very experienced. You know this this is my first year
with the team, and these guys are going for a
three peat, which is very very tough to do in
any sport. Yeah, but that's the plan and you know,
and we've been working hard towards it.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
So who are you up against tonight?

Speaker 3 (01:39):
The Woole Goong roll of Hawks. Who have They've played
in the last two Grand finals and last year they
won with a buzzer beater by captain Tom O'Neil thorn
by three points, so we know it's definitely going to
be a tough one.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
Yeah. Now tell me, like, how's your final run through
sort of gone? Are you feeling sort of settled, confident
or how are you feeling?

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Yeah, Look, we tried to make the whole season that
we play the same way, we train the same way,
so that you know, nothing changes too much. I know
in finals, you know, like mindset you do and you know,
pressure or sort but we've just tried to keep things
as normal as possible, play and train as hard as
we can so that when we get on the court's
that's our usual type of play.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
And in terms of the team, like the makeup of
the team hasn't differed much over the last couple of seasons.
When you have been really successful. You know, how's the
team looking. Have you got any injuries or anything that
you're concerned about.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Yeah, I think there's just been minor changes over the
last couple of years. We did have one of the
good players from the team, John ty Brown, went and
joining the opposition team. But we got a very good
import from Spain who Tom plays with when he's overseas,
and he's been fantastic for the league and our team,

(02:58):
so that's very exciting. We do have an injury to
one of our starters, but we've always this season tried
to put everybody through position so that they're ready to
step up if it's their turn. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Now Tom's there right now, isn't he? Yes?

Speaker 3 (03:13):
He is? Does he want to have a quick chat
to me?

Speaker 1 (03:15):
I'd love to thank you, Thanks Tracy, thank you. Oh Tom,
can you hear me all right. So Tom O'Neill thorn,
now you are also you're also on the Australian team. Tom,
how how good is it playing for the Salties.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
First off, Oh, it's incredible. You know Dwn bay Rup
grew up there and to be able to play for,
you know, your home team in the national stages is
incredible and that played for. I wasn't able to play
for the mt as a kid, and you know they're
watching those teams. You know, we have to kind of
you know, fipe everything they get. So to be able
to play, you know, for a senior national team here
and you know we're playing pretty well. So to be

(03:53):
touching above our light and performing as we are, it's
pretty pretty exciting mate.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Making the Northern Territory so proud I think, you know
in terms of, like you said, being homegrown talent and
then you're on that stage you're also you know, part
of the Australian team. It's incredible stuff.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Not bad. You know, you have to know, pinch yourself
every now and then when you're flying around the world.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Yeah, I bet mate. How's the team looking? How you
all feeling today ahead of the game.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Everybody's feeling pretty good, as Straty just said. We had
a shoot around this morning and went I think pretty well,
everybody get out of bed. I think not too sleepy,
which is good. And yet we're feeling good. We haven't
played wool Goong since round one, so I think we've
kind of been building towards this game, and I think
both teams have had this date circled in the calendar
for a while and so we're feeling pretty prepared. Unfortunately,
one of our one of our starters went down last night,

(04:43):
so he's a semi wid it's unavailable, but you know
we've got a young up and comer on Alex Blackmore
was so he should you know, splot right at that position,
which is good. We're super scited, ready to be ready
to play.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
And what kind of team is Woollongong. I mean, obviously
you're all very physical those games. I mean to anybody
that's been to watch one, they are incredibly physical. You
guys are tough, there is no doubt about that. What's
the Woollongong team like and what are you sort of
going to be looking out for and trying to avoid
from them? I suppose yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
I mean we've we've played them in the Pastagram Finals
and lucky to beat them in both. So I think
this year they kind of took that a bit personally
and have really loaded up. And you know, they stole
one of our best plays from last season, Johnnie Brown,
and he's going to have gone to the dark side there.
But I'll say that they just really technically sound and
you know, break teams down through their their strategy, and

(05:32):
they've got a couple of unbelievable shooters, some of the
best shooters in the world. I think we're probably a
bit more athletic and fast paced than them. They like
to slow down the game and you know, so we'll
see it's gonna be tough. I mean, they got us
in one of the games in Darwin, so I think
we're a bit bitter about that. They'll be feeling pretty good,
but I think it's going to be in an unreal
game and we'll see how we go.

Speaker 1 (05:51):
Well, tom On behalf of everybody listening in the Northern
Territory this morning, make good luck. We are behind you, guys.
I hope you have a fanantastic game.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Thank you, and we will see you guys next year
at the Croc bub again.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Wonderful yeah, yeah for sure. Good on you mate, Thank
you so much, and good luck for tonight.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Thank you, thank you,
