Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, road safety has definitely been a key theme on
the show today as we head into the Easter long weekend,
and continuing that talk, but in a bit of a
different context because a number of local youths at the
Slide Dance Theater Company are going to be presenting a
production in May. It's aimed to address the escalation of
teenage road debts. Now, I'm pleased to say that. Joining

(00:22):
me in the studio right now, just make sure I've
got all those microphones on. We have got Amalia Baker,
good morning to you, morningater, lovely to have you on
the studio. We've got Chloe Kela Kajaris, good morning to you,
and of course we've got Grace Hendry, good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
It is wonderful to have the three of you in
the studio now. You are all part of the Slide
Dance Theater Company. And this production was last year the
first time that it had been presented.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
So time was originally made in twenty eleven, it was
redone in twenty fifteen. Yeah, we were then going to
do it in twenty twenty. Obviously, COVID unfortunately happened, so
we didn't do it then, and then we obviously had
a very successful season last year and this year we've
decided to bring it back again.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Well, it wasn't just successful season, it was totally sold out,
is my understanding to rave reviews. You know, like I
had people who went and said it was just incredible,
And I mean, Chloe, the audience that you're really trying
to aim for as well. It's something for everybody, but
really for young people too.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Yeah, no, so what the people that should really see time? Like,
it's for everyone, but we're really trying to aim it
at novice drivers and people who were you know, starting
out on their l's, at their peers, and you know,
just warning them about what can happen if you make
that wrong decision of getting into a car, or just
even reminding them to drive safely on our roads, considering

(01:58):
how dangerous it can be if it escalates.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Well, look, some people listening might be thinking to themselves,
how do you bring that road safety message into a
beautiful dance performance? Is how I envisage it, Emilia, How
do you do that? I'm assuming in a really meaningful way.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
Well, it slight prefers to show rather than tell, yep,
so re really benefit off the individuality of our audiences
and their personal experience, so we allow that to impact
them more.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
And from all accounts, not only like a beautiful performance,
but a really moving performance. What's some of the feedback
that you guys received after last year? Who wants to go?
I'll go.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
We've had such incredible feedback from so many important people,
people like the police commissioner, the Minister for Education came
and saw it, which was fantastic, and last year the
feedback was just so incredible that they all said, you
have to do this again. So that's why we're doing
it so soon after we've just done it, because it
was so successful and so many people saw it and

(03:13):
very important people said you need to do this again.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
Well, and I'm assuming as well young people saying that
to you as well and talking about the impact that
it had on them after they had come and watched.
For those, you know, who don't really know what it's
all about, give us a bit of a you know,
give us a bit of detail in terms of what
they can expect if they come along and watch Time.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
So Time follows the story of a teenage girl who
makes a dangerous decision to get into a car with
an intoxicated intoxicated driver. Sorry, Yeah, And the show basically
explores the lasting impact that her choices make on her friends,
her family, and the wider community.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
But it just, you know, it.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Highlights how one decision might seem like it only will
affect the life of one person, the person who got
to the car, but it show this show, sorry, this
show time shows people how you know, it can affect
many many people over a long period of time, and
when one life ends, so many have to continue on

(04:22):
and get on with their lives.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Is it quite like is it quite a moving performance
to be part of Emily?

Speaker 4 (04:28):
Yes? Absolutely. As a novice driver doing my first time,
it really changed my perspectives driving. And it is also
hard as dancers to go force ourself into that state
of mind so often and then have to leave it behind.

(04:51):
It can be hard to transition.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Our cast members are so incredibly supportive of each other.
We're like one big family, so one is ever not okay.
We all check in after every show make sure everyone's
all right, so we're all good.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
But it is how many of you are there in
the cast, If you've got that involved with the top
of your head, we do.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
We're a very big, lovely family of fifty.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
That's so cool. And what ages you know, like, does
it vary from.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Yeah, our youngest is thirteen, and then we have some
lovely dancers who play Charlie's parents. She is our main character.
So I don't know if I want to tell you
how old they are, but they're very wonderful.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
Yeah, right, And I mean, like, the thing I love
about that though, is that this is literally it is
a show that's being put on for people of all
ages to come and watch. But you've got fifty Territorians
involved in it. Like, that's a fantastic thing. And people
as young as thirteen involved in something that hopefully is

(05:51):
really life changing and attitude changing for young people to
come and watch. That's something you guys should be really
proud of. I thank you. It's you know, like, it's
a wonderful thing to see young people involved in really good,
positive things. And then to look at the year number
of you involved in it, I think it's wonderful. We

(06:12):
know it's sold out last year, the tickets are already
selling fast. Where can people go to find out more
and to get themselves a ticket?

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, So our show season is from the seventh to
the ninth of May at the Domin Entertainment Center and
you can book tickets through their website. And we are
so excited to have more new people in our audiences.

Speaker 4 (06:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
How many shows are you're putting on this time round?
Do you know? Is it a few? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (06:38):
We're putting on five shows. We're doing two matinees yep,
three matinee sorry, yeah, and two evening performances.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
Is that more than what there was last year? Do
you know?

Speaker 2 (06:49):
I think it might be less than last year because
we're up on the wonderful playhouse stage this year, so
we have a bigger capacity for more audience, so we're
doing a few less shows, how or.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
So well, it is wonderful stuff and wonderful to see
you incredible young ladies back in the studio all the
very best. I hope that it goes. I know it's
going to go really well. Do you block to your
dance all year round? You three? Are you always training,
always practicing?

Speaker 2 (07:18):
How off?

Speaker 1 (07:19):
Like, how much work just from a behind the scenes perspective,
how many hours a week would go into really putting
together a show like this?

Speaker 3 (07:29):
So on average when you know we're starting off in
a show season we do about eight hours a week,
but then as we get closer to showtime, that bumps
up and we do extra rehearsals and when we have
extra people join our shows, we you know, use that
time to really collaborate alls one company. But yeah, we

(07:51):
do three shows a year, so yeah, and those we're
doing five shows for Time as you know, but some
of those can range from a show season can have
six shows to eight shows like we did for.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Time last year.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
Yeah. But yeah, anything.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
You want to add grace and like juggling that with
work or school and everything else, all your other commitments.
Good on you.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
Yeah, it's so fantastic. SLID do an audition every year.
So that is how all of our company members are chosen.
And we are very lucky enough to be able to
employ local mentors, national mentors, and this year even international
mentors have come over from New Zealand to join us.
So our mentorship program is pretty incredible for artists all
over the world now to come and join and inspire

(08:36):
our young people that we have in the territory.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
How wonderful. Well, good on you three, It is wonderful
to have you in the studio. I reckon these shows
will sell out again, so get in quick, jump online
and get your tickets. It is wonderful to catch up
with all three of you this morning, Emiliah Baker, Grace
Hendri and Chloe Kellakajaris. Thank you so much for your time.

(08:59):
Lovely to speak to you all.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
It was so great to be here. Thank you so
much for having us.

Speaker 1 (09:03):
Thank you, no worries at all,
