Speaker 1 (00:00):
We've just spoken to the Northern Territory firefighters and found
out a bit more about how things went from the
Fieries perspective. Joining us live on the line right now,
So John Ambulance Territory Response Manager Craig Garaway, get a Craig.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Good morning, Katie.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
How are you not bad? Probably better than you and
all of our first responders who I know have been busy.
Even even if people do behave it's still an incredibly
busy night for our first responders on Territory Day.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Yeah. Look, it is for a number of reasons as
you said. Obviously everyone down enjoying the other fireworks and
obviously a lot of social gatherings going on who normally
wouldn't have in the middle of the week. So a
bit going on kept our first responders, all of them
are very busy all night. And yeah, thankfully big clean
up to though not thankfully I suppose we clean up

(00:50):
by the day on City Council today.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Yeah, and we look. We spoke to the Sea of
the City of dar On a bit earlier this morning.
She talked us through some of the cleanup. We've just
spoken obviously to the Fieries one hundred and thirty two
fires they were called out to Craig, It sounds like
you guys had really quite a busy night as well.
Can you talk me through some of those injuries.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Yeah, Look, as you said, we weren't busy with another
you know. Obviously the fireworks accounted for some of those infants.
Obviously had a couple of car crashes as well. But
we had a number of injuries in Bellomack, Welgeman and
Gray last night. The first one being at thirty seven
year old male was a significant burn to its groin area,

(01:33):
and in that incident we also had a young infant
that had a minor burn as a result of that.
So obviously two people injured there, but the groin injury
obviously around the groin area was quite significant. Anti Police
arrived on scene first at that one and applied some
first aid first up until we arrived, and then pretty
much followed straight on after that with a nineteen year

(01:54):
old female had burns to a face and leg as
a result of another fireworks. I'm not really sure what happened,
but obviously not going where it was meant to go.
And then the last one was a six month old
with some facial burns. Again, not really sure what's happened there,
but obviously at little baby with some facial burns as

(02:16):
a result of fireworks, and we obviously had our critical
response unit respond with our paramedics to that one.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
Oh that is awful. What do we have any idea
where that where that incident happened that was involving the
six months old?

Speaker 2 (02:33):
No, we actually met a car. I believe that we're
bringing that baby in, so I'm not really sure exactly
where it happened. I don't have that information from the cable.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
How terrible, But the baby is okay.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Yeah, baby's okay, got very good treatment by the family
and obviously by the paramedics that were involved.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Yeah. Then taught me through the incident with the bloke
getting hit in the groin with the firework. What was
going on there?

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Look, I think there's a lot of big fireworks out there,
and obviously some of them I think misspire. I don't
have the exact details of what's happened there, but the
majority of what we see is you know, firework to
the missfire will fallen over and obviously having gone up
in the air like they've meant to, and obviously there's
people standing around and sitting around, and this is how

(03:23):
people have become INJUREDI with a ship.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Yeah, that is not good. And I mean in terms
of all of those injuries, Craig, do we have any
idea if they, like, you know, were they severe or
on the on the on the sort of more minor scale,
any idea y the.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
One the thirty seven year old a nine year old girl,
they were quite significant burns or serious burns. I would
suggest they weren't just minor burns. The other ones were
more in the line of nature. Thank. Yeah, unusual for
us to see burns. You know, that bad. You know,
obviously these people make for recovery, but you know, it's
painful injury and any type of burn and it's typical

(04:05):
around the groin area. I've been burnt there many many
years ago as a young lad, and I can see
you now. It's not the most pleasant thing in the world.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
No, it would not be at all, Craig Garaway. You're
always full of surprises, mate.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Yeah, well that wasn't a surprise. I really wanted to
have to be honest with him, but it got me
out of.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Was that a fire cracker incident as well? Craig.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
No, I wish it was a cup of tea early
in the morning.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
Oh dm A, I won't make you reveal anymore to us.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
That's appreciate.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
It does not sound like fun at all. Look, let's
go to some of the other incidents from overnight. A
pedestrian was also hit by a car in Parat.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah. Look, we're having a lot of pedestrianship by cars
over the last few months. I seemed to be reporting
them regularly. And in that Prap area as well. Seems
to really really bad area. Obviously, it's a busy area,
you know, a lot of traffic gets through there. It
is a little bit dark as well, and I suppose
you know, most people aren't expecting someone to step out
in front of them. So yeah, look, be careful anywhere

(05:14):
you're driving. Be aware that you know, we're in school holidays.
You know, the most unlikely things happen, unfortunate with the
kids pushbikes, you know, and then if alcohol is involved,
it obviously had the whole new dimension.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Yeah, you're spot on, and unfortunately as well, from what
I can see, there was also a road rage incident
directed at our paramedics.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
Yeah, because we had a really funny night. Last night
we had a couple of our paramedics sort of assaulted
in the suburbs at a residence, which seems to be
happening more and more often. Then obviously followed on with
this where one of our command vehicles was tailgated down
the brama there and not really sure what the people

(05:57):
were thinking in that vehicle, but yeah, not a great
thing to be curring. You know, I saw a road
ray incident on Sunday out of how it springs. I'm
not really sure what's going on with people. It's not
the tropo season yet, but yeah, you know, some of
the behaviors on the road, I think I reported last
weekend eight crashes, seventeen people take in the hospital. So

(06:19):
you know, just need to be a bit smarter out theading.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Yeah, you spot on. So what happened in the incident
where the paramedics have gone to someone's home.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Oh, look, you know we have this happened quite readily
where we go in to help people and unfortunately people
you know, turn on our paramedics for some unknown reason.
Where we're very lucky we have some jurist systems within
our you know, security for our staff to obviously catch
every class attention and our attention. We had two parameds

(06:51):
solars the other night trying to hold someone on a
stretch that didn't decide they didn't want to be in
an ambulance. You know, it's just unbelievable what our people
are having to go through at the moment.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Dead set like that is terrible, Craig, Like, are we
talking alcohol related incidents or not? Always?

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Look, I suggest most of these are either alcohol or
drug related. You know, most people are really happy to us. Yeah,
I think that's they want us there, but then they
don't want us there. So you would suggest that people
who are thinking rationally and aren't affected by drugs or
alco whole probably do these things. I would suggest, well, Craig.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Look, we appreciate the work of our Saint John Cruz.
You know, right from the call takers to the paramedics
out there helping people. They should not be in a
situation where people are carrying on in this way when
they're there ready to help. But look on behalf of
the community, and I know that so many, so many
in our community really appreciate the work that you guys do.

(07:53):
So thank you for the work that you do. A
big thanks to all of you for the work that
you put in last night as well for Territory Day.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
Yeah, thanks Katie. And look, I'd just like to put
a big shout out to all those first responders and
in particular all our volunteers who came out last night
to help support the community. Without those volunteers supporting the community,
a lot of these events can't happen. And these people
are unpaid I call them unsunk heroes, unpaid heroes. They're
out there every day, every weekend supporting the community.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
Yeah, absolutely, spot on, Craig. And you know, without those volunteers,
a lot of those events couldn't happen. And we're just
talking about this as well with with the fieries, even
with bushfires in Tea and all of those volunteers that
were helping last night as well. Without all the volunteers
across the board, we wouldn't be able to have Territory
Day in the.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Way that we have it. No, you wouldn't be able
to be at Mindle Beach and you wouldn't be able
to be a lot of these big events. And this
goes for everything motorsport is covered by our volunteers. You know,
you're right the ant bushfires, you know, they're out every day,
you know, doing something, you know, and there's a lot
of those guys with the volunteering as well, a number

(09:00):
of our paramedics a volunteer push fire fighters as well,
so you know, without them, we just can't get through
every day in the Northern Territory.

Speaker 1 (09:09):
Well, Craig Garaway, thank you. Thanks so much for your
time this morning. I really appreciate it. And sorry we
didn't have you on yesterday. I had a day off.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Yeah, that's all right, Katie. I thought i'd take today
off so you're talking. I thought i'd replicate what you did.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
Get Good on your mate, You've earned itsh. I'm sorry
you're still going to do a radio interview on your
day off. Thank you, Good on you, Craig.
