Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now step Out Disability Services in Catherine. They've partnered with
the local Arts and Culture Center on a project that
explores people's thoughts and feelings about disability now the interactive
art work Well, it aims to get the community involved
by sharing their insights as well as their experiences with
disability through quotes, poems or sketches and joining us on

(00:23):
the line to tell us a bit more. Is Step
Out Disability Services Community Access Coordinator Gareth True Good morning
to you.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Gareth, morning, Gertie. How are you going.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
You're really good? This sounds like a wonderful initiative. Gareth.
Can you paint a bit of a picture for us
of this art project for our listeners? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
So.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
The piece is inspired by the projects by Yoko Ono,
which are members of the public to reflect on and
celebrate their mother's maternal love that they experienced your in childhood.
And I thought that exhibition then thought that it would
be a really great fit for a topicbout disability, because
I know that disability can be tricky to talk about. People.

(01:06):
Can you feel a bit afraid of thinking the wrong thing,
or saying the wrong thing, or asking the wrong sort
of questions? So, yeah, I guess I wanted to create
a space where people could explore and express their feelings
about disability without judgment.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
It's a really nice thing to do, and you know,
you're right, I think sometimes people are a bit worried
that they're going to say the wrong thing or do
the wrong thing. What has been some of the insight
that you've sort of gained so far?

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, so we've had a lot of really different and
really interesting responses. So one of them was a lady
pointed out that that prefix this has a lot of
negative connotations, like you know, disgusting or dishonest, and that
maybe you know, we should think about another and another
phrase or word to describe disability. Yep, somebody else sort

(01:58):
of wrote something around reflecting on the journey of acquiring
a disability, So you know, initially maybe the loss and
the trauma and the grief of having a disability and
then sort of moving moving through to a state of
acceptance and just sort of moving through the world that way,
I guess, And then I guess from a personal perspective.
I also participated in the project, and I've got a

(02:21):
neurological condition, and thankfully that plays a pretty small part
of my life, but it doesn't affect me too much.
But so I guess my reflection, to be honest, was
that it was a bit boring for me personally, like it, yeah,
just another aspect I suppose of life. So yeah, really
really varied input from the community, which was great.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
And why was it something that you sort of, you know,
you really wanted to do.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
I think, yeah, I think it because a couple of reasons.
I guess so because disability can can be tricky to
talk about, so I wanted to get people that opportunity.
And also, you know, in cash and we have a
really amazing community and it is really accessible for people
with disability, and I think maybe that's not something that
maybe even the town recognizes, but also I don't know
if that's more broadly known across the territory. So sort

(03:09):
of wanted to celebrate and recognize that as well because
we've got a really amazing community here.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
Has there been quite a big response to the projects
so far.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah, there has been, which is terrific. We've had schools
come and get engaged, We've had members of the general
public come in, and we also had the opportunity for
people to participate online and I think we got someone
from Germany cool debating and letting us know their their
thoughts on disability. So that was Yeah, that was really cool.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Yeah, that's awesome. I love this. So is it only
are the only people that are in Catherine are able
to sort of access it, aren't they? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (03:47):
So we've been posting some responses on our on our
social media with the hashtag direct Perspectives. But yeah, mostly
it is people who can physically go into the Art
Center who get to check out what responses have been Gareth, how.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Can people if I mean, if they are thinking to themselves,
do you know what this sounds great? I'd love to
come and check it out. Or I'd love to see more.
Can they jump on Facebook or what's the best way
for them to sort of find out a bit more?

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Yeah, so our Facebook page is step Out Disability Services,
so they could jump on there and have a poe
true and see some posts the art Center gotting money
with resuts and Culture Center. They're also on Facebook as
girag for sure, so Gyra double s and they will
also have some you know, some pictures of posts and

(04:31):
things there as well. So yeah, people are keen to
check it out and then definitely there's some stuff on
Facebook there that they could look at.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Well, Gareth, I reckon it's a lovely thing to do.
I think it's it sounds like such a nice project
and like an all inclusive project as well for everybody
to be involved in, which I think just sounds marvelous.
So good on you, and I'm sure it's has everybody
finished contributing now or is there still sort of time
to contribute as well as come and take a look

(04:58):
at it.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Oh, they've got just till Friday if they wanted to contribute,
not to come and check it out. But it's yeah,
we've had such an enormous response and the wall is
pretty full, to be honest of responses, which is great
and lovely to have that level of engagement that is
really nice.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
Well, Gareth, it's lovely to speak with you this morning
from step Out Disability Services, the community Access coordinator. Thanks
so much for your time.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Thanks Katie, appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
