Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now we know that a teenager is in a serious

(00:02):
condition after he was stabbed at the Royal Darwin Show,
with the alleged defender now in custody. The Northern Territory
Police said the boy, age fifteen, was assaulted with a
knife by another fifteen year old at the showgrounds after
an altercation. Now joining us on the line is Northern
Territory Police Superintendent Paul Morrissey.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Good morning, Paul, Good morning Cody.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Thanks so much for your time this morning. Paul. Can
you talk us through what happened?

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Yeah, it's a bit as you just said. It's at
about eight twenty pm on Saturday night at the show,
two fifteen year old males known to each other engaged
in a physical fight. During the fight, one of the
males produced a knife and stabbed the other one once
before fleeing the area. The injured mar was attended to

(00:51):
by police security in Saint John's and taken to Royal
Darwin Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Do we know, like, do we know if he's had
to undergo surgery? Do we know? You know how he
is at this point in time.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
My updates are that he has had some surgery, but
he is still serious but stable condition at the moment.
He's still in nice of you.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Now you did touch on this. I think he said
that those two boys were known to each other.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
That's my understanding. They had a bit of a history
of conflict between the two Paul, do not.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
Like are they part of some like you know, I
don't know, some kind of suburb gangs.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
No, but I don't believe so, I don't believe it's
again related.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Okay, Now they were known to each other. We know
the alleged defender, they'd fled the scene. How did the
police manage to track him down?

Speaker 2 (01:49):
The Earfender's family reached out to police and he surrendered
to police that evening.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Okay, Well, that is I mean, that's obviously a positive
thing that his families made sure that he has done,
you know, done the right thing in terms of handing
himself in what's he been charged with.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
He's been charged with recklessly endangering life and possessed, possessing,
caring and using a controlled weapon.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
And is he due to I'm assuming he's due to
appear in court fairly soon.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Yeah, he was reminded over the weekend and he's due
to a pear at the Youth Justice Court today.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
Okay, Now, do you know if he was on bail
or if any of those involved were on bail or
known to the police.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
I don't. I can't comment on the victim, but I
can certainly as I understand that the offender was not
on bail at the time.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
And known to police at all.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
I'm sure of his background.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Now, I mean, tell me a lot of families, a
lot of people sort of asking how on earth you
know were we in a situation where somebody's armed with
a knife at the show. I understand that there was
some wanding and that kind of thing happening.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Yeah, I believe wanding was conducted by security at the
front of the show, and I think wanding is an
effective tool, but it's not the bee on end all
of a knife violence.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
So it wasn't so the police didn't have like a
wanding operation happening or anything at the show on the weekend.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
It was an authorized wanding event, but wanding was conducted
by security at the entrance.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Okay, I mean, Paul, how disappointing is it that something
like this happens at what is supposed to be a
family event that brings Territorians together. I mean, I know,
I feel like half of Darwin's teenagers were there on
Saturday night, and it's an utterly frightening situation for everybody
to witness.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
I agree there would have been a lot of kids around,
a lot of family people. As you mentioned, I suppose
the only point would be that the parties are known
to each other and it's not a random event.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Do you know what that sort of plan to meet
up to fight.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
I don't believe that's the case, Paul.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
In terms of, you know, the rest of the show
and behavior from others. Were there any other incidents that
were of note from the Northern Territory Police?

Speaker 2 (04:25):
From the running sheets that I've seen, it appears that
it went pretty well. There were some other minor events
that occurred, but all in all, it was well attended
and well behaved.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
I mean, how disappointing is it then when that is
the case for then police having to deal with this
situation that is such an incredibly serious one with a
teenager stabbing another teenager.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Oh, it is concerning for all the people involved, everyone
at the show, and it's been concerning for any people
that witness similar event, whether it be at the show
or elsewhere.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
Well, are there further like you is, they're further investigating
still to be done on this incident from Saturday night.
Are police still calling for witnesses?

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Yeah, we would call for witnesses if anyone has seen
the incident, if they could call one three one trip
le four and let police know. Any occurrence of this
significance requires investigation via Crime Division members, and investigations are ongoing.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
Well, Superintendent Paul Morrissey, I mean, have you like the
only other thing I do want to ask is there
is footage of the incident circulating on social media. I
mean it's sort of spread far and wide. Are you
concerned about that?

Speaker 2 (05:50):
It is concerning, but I suppose it's part of today
that things that happen and get to social media straight away, don't.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
They Well, yeah, it's and it's shocking, and then you know,
you sort of view the vision and I just think
to myself, like, I hope that it doesn't encourage other
people to behave in that way. I mean, the thought
of teenagers being armed with knives and then like actually
using them is just horrific.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
It is, and hopefully we can make this young man
accountable for his actions and just put that message out
to the community that this behaviors not to be tolerated.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
It really isn't well. Northern Territory Police Superintendent Paul Morrissey
really appreciate your time this morning. Thanks so much for
joining me on the show. Thanks, thank you.
