Speaker 1 (00:00):
There has been a lot happening when it comes to
swimming in the Northern Territory recently. And joining me in
the studio is the swimming and CEO Warren Dobson. Good
morning to you, morning, Katie.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Great to be back.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
It's good to have you on the show. And there
is so much happening when it comes to swimming in
the NT right now.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
There is a lot on.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
There is a lot busy, man, and you've got the
Dolphins here at the moment now, not the footballing Dolphins,
the swimming Dolphins.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
The Australian pool team here is here at the moment.
So they've been here since Saturday and they're here until
next Wednesday. So they're loving the weather. Obviously, they've all
come from places where it's in some instances below zero,
so they're absolutely loving it here at the moment.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Yeah, that's awesome. So they're here obviously to train and
to acclimatize before they go to Singapore for the World chaps. Yeah,
So talk me through like have they how long have
they been training here for and what kind of you know,
like what kind of hours are they doing at the pool.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Everyone's obviously different. They're training morning and night every day.
They arrived on Saturday when the open water team left. Yeah, yeah,
they left Saturday morning. These guys arrive Saturday afternoon and yeah,
it's basically been doubles every day. Obviously the intensity changes.
Last night was quite an intense set for all of them.

(01:20):
They were all looking a bit worse for wear yesterday afternoon,
but today was a bit This morning has been a
bit light on.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
No, they're laughing at it. And I said, it's really
interesting to watch, and some of the kids that are
training in the morning before them, it's fantastic for them
to see.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
It's so good for the young ones to see, you know,
like that saying you can't be what you don't see
is so like, it rings so true. And I think
it's really awesome for territory kids to have that exposure
to these elite athletes.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Absolutely, and the guys have been so fantastic and giving
up their time as well while they're preparing for training
to talk to the kids. And you know, more of
that will happen on a bigger scale tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Well, that's right, So tomorrow there's an event that's lined up.
Tell us a little bit more about it.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Just so it's a community opened a it's been builled
as a pool party. I just want to clarify that
it's not actually an in water but yeah, no, there
will be a couple of hours there from eight o'clock
till ten o'clock tomorrow morning where you'll be able to
meet and greet the with the dolphins and have a
chat to them, get their autograph and selfies, and there'll
be a few giveaways and all that sort of stuff

(02:22):
as well.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
So yeah, come along and how did the event with
the open water Australian swimmers guy?

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Yeah, really good. It was absolutely packed down the water
that day, so it was there. It was really great
to see and good to see that the Australian guys
jump in the water and they took some of the
kids and some of the older guys came down as
well from the master's side of things, and there was
a couple of people from the community right there that
just said, oh can I jump in? Absolutely right our head.
So no, that was really really good and it was great.

(02:49):
They loved it up here as well and water and
acclimatized and it's obviously worked well for yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
Oh and they're going quite well aren't they talk us
through some of those results at the moment with the
Open Water World Championships underway.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
Yeah, So Kyle Lee won a bronze medal yesterday in
the ten k. That was his first ever individual medal,
so that was fantastic. And then Milusha Johnson's just literally
twenty thirty minutes ago, won her second gold medal, So
she won both the five k and the ten k.
It seems crazy to me that you can back up
one after the other and win gold medals.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
That's yeah, fantastic achievement and it's great to know that
they had the lead up in here with Darwen and
they've gone on to have such great success.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Yeah. Like, I really like the fact that Darwin is
sort of becoming this hub at the moment. And I
don't know whether it's just because it's coinciding with some
of these major championship events being in warmer places like Singapore,
but I really love the way that we are seeing
Darwin utilized by different you know, different sporting groups as

(03:48):
a real hub to come here, bring their athletes here
and to train. It's a fantastic thing to see.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Yeah, I look, there's a lot going on in sport
in the NTA at the moment and it's really great
to be a part of. And you know, with the
training facility that we're working through at the moment, all
the head coaches for all the performance squads are very
very excitful when it comes up and they're already trying
to book in places for next year.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
So and does it mean as well? And I like,
I don't know, but does it mean as well when
you look at different sports and when you look at
those training facilities and when you've got your international teams
or your Australian teams going away for international meets coming here,
then you've got the swimming body or the you know
whatever a sporting body it is prepared to contribute and
be part of it. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Absolutely, Swimming Australia have been fantastic and contributing a lot
towards the gym with the equipment and because there's been
a little bit of delay that it's actually worked in
our favor for the gym because they're actually providing more
stuff now they've been up here and they see what
they need and what they can fit in. So it's
been They've been really supportive all the way through the process.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
That's good. It is really good to hear. Hey, So
tell us just for tomorrow what times it kick off again?

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Kicks off at eight o'clock in the morning. Yeah, got
till ten. There'll be a probably about a half hour
opportunity to get some signatures and some selfies. Then you'll
be able to watch the guys in the pool while
they switch over because they're operating in two sessions, and
then again there'll be another half hour session at the end.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Talk us through some of the names that we have
got here at the moment.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Kaylee, McEwen, Cole Chalmers, Mollio Callahan. The entire time, everyone
that you know is here. It's incredible just to just
me being there during the week having conversations with them all.
It's great and seeing them interact with everyone that's it's around.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
I consider myself to be pretty fit, and whenever I
see people like that training, I'm like, oh wow, generally
very inferior.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
I'm trying to hide in a room while they're all outside,
definitely so I don't get thrown in the water and drown.
So yeah, it's it's really it is.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
It's so good. Hey, one of the other announcements that
we've seen over the last couple of weeks is the
Northern Territory government announcing that they're going to be providing
funding who will employ an all abilities swim coach. Have
we got much detail on that at this point.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Look, it was a bit of a surprise, a great surprise, obviously.
It's something that we're looking to get more involved in
that all ability space and para space before that. We
do have the para team coming up here as well
in September, so that'll be a great tie in with that.
But yeah, it's very very new. We're working through it
with the government and hopefully we'll be able to work

(06:28):
with them and the NTSA to sort of finalize what
that actually looks like. But yeah, it's a great opportunity,
and we are running an anti swim ability program we're
calling it, which is starting next Thursday, which was already
on the cards anyway, but it ties in very very well.
So if there is anyone out there with a child
with a disability, have a look on socials or come

(06:51):
down to Casarina Pool on Thursdays and we're going to
be having some sessions down there for a four thirty
five point thirty every afternoon on Thursday.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Good stuff. Well, good to catch up with you this morning,
Warren Dobson. Of course the swimming en t c e
I

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Awesome, Thanks Coty, thank you,
