Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now.

Speaker 2 (00:00):
Earlier in the week, NT fire crews responded to a
large bushfire near Tenant Creek with the Juno Horse Center
and Workers Camp were under threat. They worked tirelessly through
the night on Tuesday to bring that fire under control,
with members still on the fire ground the next morning.
Now joining us on the line is the Tenant Creek

(00:20):
Acting station Officer, Matthew Morrison.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Good morning, Matthew, Good morning Katie. How are you yeah?

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Really good? Good to have you on the show. Mate.
Tell us about what happened on Tuesday night.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Cool. So, a fire starter at around ten thirty pm
sort of behind Battery Hill was burning towards the Bartley
Workers Camp and the Juno Horse Center YEP, under extreme
fire conditions. It was pushing quite fast. But it's important
to note that the workers Camp and Juno both had
really well managed firebreaks, so firefighting cruise overnight were able

(00:53):
to use those brakes to basically prevent the fire from
getting closer to the assets, which meant it went really well.
There was no evacuations from the camp or from Juno.
We did move some stock out of one of the
paddocks closer into the Juno Center area just to get
them further away from the file. As you said, crews
were there all night and pretty much continued all through

(01:15):
the next day as well.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Yeah, sounds like it. Sounds like it was a bloody,
pretty fullorn file. Like how big are we talking here?

Speaker 1 (01:24):
I think we went back out today to try and
map it as best we could, as probably best guests
would be around six hundred hectares. A couple fences that
we had to sort of get around, so we weren't
able to map the entire thing, but yeah, quite large,
quite large.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
And Matthew, tell me how long were the cruise at
the scene responding to that blaze and how many are
we talking?

Speaker 1 (01:45):
So from about ten thirty pm overnight cruise were there
until we rotated at about eleven am. Was the first
rotation two members overnight, and then another two members the
next day as well, and then we pretty much had
it all wrapped up finished back on station by that
four clock four pm, so in total, almost eighteen hours

(02:09):
the top of my head.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Yeah, yeah, Hey, it's been a busy time for you guys,
hasn't it. I Mean you've had some pretty you know,
some some tough sort of conditions over recent weeks.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Yeah, yeah, we have extreme fire conditions. It's it's the
Buply north and south of within the by danger period
still and this these conditions will persist. Everything is pretty
much ready to light so anyone that's dropping matches or
dry lightning anything like that, it's going to cause quite
large fires in the area.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
So what's the advice to locals in the area this morning,
I mean in that in the Barkley region, I guess
make sure you're not doing any of the things that
you just mentioned.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Yeah, so that and obviously they're have your firebreaks prepared.
If you do own property and you have large fence lines,
make sure you have those formula firebreaks either side. That
way we can actually protect your property, protect your house.
Do that, stay up to date with every all the
fire weather conditions, get to know the Australian warning system
and that way you'll be on top of it.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Yeah. Well, make good on you guys, you know, for
making sure that there was no sort of no property damage,
no lives at risk or anything like that. I know
it's been a busy time and I know that the
people of the Barclay would appreciate the hard work that
you guys have been doing. So thanks so much for
having a chat with us this morning. Matthew No as well.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
I'd just like to say obviously also thank you to
our volunteer members. Thank you to push Bys MT. They
came out and assisted us. Anti police were out there
helping as well. Also landowners. We were very fortunate that
one of the local station owners was able to fly
over us and provide aerial support, letting us know if
any containment lines had breached. And that community awareness is

(03:50):
really helpful and really good.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Oh what a crew. I love it. You know, like
in those hard times, that's when the community gets together, right,
you rally around and you look out for each other.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
That's right, definitely, and it shows in these small remote communities.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
It would, Matthew great to speak with you this morning.
I really appreciate your time. Thank you you too,
