Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now we know that this week Territorians are indeed being
encouraged to wear blue on Friday to take a stand
against bullying. For Do It For Dolly Day, the national
awareness and fundraising campaign was created after fourteen year old
Catherine Girl Dolly Everett, tragically took her life in January
twenty eighteen following relentless and sustained bullying and cyber bullying.

(00:26):
Now joining me on the line is Dolly's dad, Tick Everett.
Good morning to you, Tick.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Good a Katie. How are you?

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Yeah, good mate, So good to have you on the show.
As always, Now to those out there listening who who
don't know what Do It For Dolly Day is all about,
explain it to us.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Yeah, Katie. So it's just a day, you know, I
mean every day the day of conness, you know, that's
how we think it should be. But today, you know,
Friday's a special day. We encourage everyone to wear blue
and just go that little extra mile for somebody that
you might need it, or you know, somebody that you
don't even know might need it, and just encourage people
to be kind, check on your mates and you know,

(01:12):
parents to find the time to sit down and have
that conversation with their kids and or you know the
same thing. You know, some young people might just take
it as an opportunity to sit down with mum and
dad and open up and let them know what's actually
going on.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Look, I think it's such an important thing to do.
My little girl just turned fourteen, you know, So for me,
it's something that I think is really important for us
to do as parents, and I quite often speak to
my kids about your family and about your girl, Dolly.
I think you know, those conversations are sometimes tough ones

(01:50):
to have, but they've got to be had.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Definitely, definitely, Katie. I mean, they're not an easy conversation
at all. And I mean, if any words wisdom from
my sod you know, you might be wondering how or
or if you should start the conversation. But you know,
from my point of view, definitely a hard conversation far
better than you know, not being able to have a

(02:13):
conversation anymore.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
So, Yeah, in terms of what Dolly went through, I
mean for like for our listeners and for other parents
like myself. You know, Look, do you think things go
on that you know that sometimes kids feel maybe a
bit embarrassed or a bit sort of you know, they're
not they're not sure whether to raise it with their
parents too.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Oh, definitely, definitely. You know, there's it's a whole other
world out there from what we grew up as, you know,
as when we were kids. But no doubt there'd be
a little bit of embarrassment. They're a little bit of
shame possibly, And that's you know, our pro our programs
and our our beacon app and stuff like that. It

(02:56):
all sort of comes back to just building that trust
with your children, and you know, children building trust with
their parents that they can have those conversations and there
is help available. And you know, we all do silly things,
whether we're you know, kids or teenagers or young adults
or old adults, we all do silly things and at
the end of the day, yep, there's always a way

(03:19):
to talk about it and to fix it and to
get around and move on and keep going.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
So yep, yeah, that is so right. Tell me a
little bit more about some of the different tools and
some of the different things that you know that Dolly's
Stream is doing, and do it for Dolly Day really
sort of you know, can help.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
With I guess yeah, So, I mean last year it was,
you know, it was our biggest year on record, and
this year it's getting bigger, which is amazing. You know,
it just flattens us every time we see the figures.
But last year alone we got to two hundred and
sixty three schools around Australia, we de live at four
hundred and seventy four workshops and that was in front

(04:00):
of more than twenty three eight hundred students. So this
year we're obviously building on that and getting bigger. We've
got sixteen hundred and ninety something registered events for Friday
already and still pouring in. So the funds go mainly
into obviously paying for the programs that we delivered to

(04:22):
schools and into some workplaces. We're also you know flip
the table a little bit and delivering programs into workplaces
as well. Now we've got an amazing team that are
just so good at communicating and breaking the ice so
to speak. And you know, obviously funding the Beacon app

(04:44):
that we've got, which is basically you know Kates one
dreams she had of one stop shop where parents can
and young people can go for help. And then the
twenty four to seven, seven day a week support as well,
that obviously takes a lot of money to fund and
to keep up and running. So you know, every every

(05:07):
dollar week out that we raise, you know, we try
absolute hardest to put it towards delivering something back into
the community.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
What's it like for you and Kate? You know when
you look at how much has been achieved by you
guys in this space as a result of of you know,
of of losing Dolly and and and how I mean, like,
how do you think she'd feel when you look at
what you guys have done across the nation to help people?

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yeah? Mate, I mean, I mean Kate and I we
always Kate, you know, we passed the credit on you know,
we we can't do what our team does by ourselves.
We wouldn't we wouldn't have a chance. One, we wouldn't
know where to start. But two, you just can't do
it without the team that we've got and the community support,
and a lot of what we achieve and the results

(05:59):
we get is driven from the interaction within the community
and the conversations that something like Friday starts and we're
you know, our biggest thing is we don't really mind
whether you raise five dollars or or you know, maybe
five million dollars one day, but it's the conversations that
come from it that are the most important. And you know,

(06:19):
I always sort of think sometimes, you know, I wonder
what Dolly would say or do or think about what
we've done. You know, would she be embarrassed or would
she be proud? But I think at the end of
the day, she'd be she'd be pretty proud of the
amount of young people that you know, we have helped
and and potentially saved them from falling through the traps.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
So mate, And you know, I just think that everybody
around the nation, you know, they remember your daughter and
and they I think that your family, what you guys
have done is nothing short of nominal and it's you know,
it's real credit too. I know that you and Kate,

(07:05):
you know, obviously say you've got lots of people around
you supporting, and I know you do. But you know,
what you two have done is incredible and real testament
to the kind of people that you both are.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
I think, thanks Katie. Yeah, I mean it is. It's
definitely a community project, that's for sure. Yeah, But you know,
and it's one that we wish we never had to start.
But at the end of the day, you know, maybe
maybe it's for the better. So that's what we keep
telling ourselves.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
Anyway, Yeah, good on you now mate, How can we
get involved? I mean on Friday where you're blue and
get that conversation going. What else can we do? Where
can people head do if they want some INFI made.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
These this way as always. These days is the good
old Internet, So the all thee w's and thedollystream dot
com jump on there. I mean, all the socials have
got it. We're getting really trendy these days. We've even
got TikTok accounts up and running, so you know, people
can jump on there and do the hashtags and stuff.

(08:07):
But I'm very good at that.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
We're clearly not that with it, mate. I don't even
know if people say trendy anymore.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
There's a bit of that time. But I mean anything
and everything, Katie. I mean, as we said, just one
conversation can literally save someone's life, and that's what it's
all about on Friday. And you know, if you can
take someone's bad day and make them smile, well, I

(08:37):
mean that's you might get anything else done for the day.
But I'll tell you what if you can turn someone's
stay around and make them smile. Well, you've done a
pretty bloody good job.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
I reckon, absolutely that is so true. And you know
I always say to my kids as well, if you
if if you're some like if you don't feel strong
enough to speak up, sometimes even just being there standing
next to somebody who's maybe not in a good space,
or you know, giving someone a little touching of the
hand or you know, letting them know that they're not alone,

(09:06):
goes a huge way as well.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
Absolutely. You know, even if you're at school on Friday
and there is another student that's doing a bit tough,
for a bit quiet or a bit sad, you know,
just go and park up the side of them and
have a bit of a yarn or you know, share
lunch or or you know walk to the school bus
or something. You know, it could it could be the
smallest little act that literally saved somebody's life.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
Yeah, your spot on well tick. Thank you mate. As always,
I always love a chat with you. Please it and
a big thanks to you and Kate for all the
work that you guys do. Always love catching up with you.
Thank you again for your time.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Good on you, Katie, We really appreciate your support, and
thank you to everybody else that's getting involved. It's very
very humbling and we appreciate it. So thank you, Thank you.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Tick Everett there, good on your tick. Thank you
