Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now, my next guest was the victim of a violent
home invasion in Palmerston. Earlier this year, Trevor Miller was
allegedly attacked in his own home with an edged weapon
believed to be a machete, by two boys aged thirteen
and fourteen, who were later arrested by the Northern Territory Police. Now,
the incident shocked the territory. The injury is so horrific

(00:23):
that Trevor spent three months in hospital learning to use
his hands again. Now Trevor joins me on the line.
Good morning, Trevor, three Kings of so Passions. Oh Trevor,
I am so pleased to speak to you because I've
got to tell you myself and the whole of the
Northern Territory were really bloody worried about you earlier in

(00:47):
the year.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Well, when I go to the court, I'm going to
tell kids that they are really really lucky because the
one charge that they're not passing is murder and that's

(01:17):
only the dous the skills of the maybe it.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
So they worked really hard to make sure that you
are still alive. Trevor. You were in hospital for three months,
is that right.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Correct?

Speaker 1 (01:41):
What's life been like for you since those teenagers got
into your home.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
My week generally is three to four nical departments per week.
It just consumes my life.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Trevor. That's heartbreaking to hear because I know that prior
to this incident happening, you were really independent before, and
you were volunteering in the community. You had a huge,
huge contribution to make to the community.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
I am passionate about my community, Trevor.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
I know it's tough. I know it's really tough for
you to be able to come on today and speak,
but you're a survivor, and I think it's so important
that Territorians hear from you and they hear the impact
that this terrible crime had on you. Now, I'm actually
not sure where this matter is at through the court,

(03:04):
so obviously I'll be a little bit careful what I
do and don't say. But what can you remember from
that day?

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Absolutely everything, Dragging out my beds, of my hair, fighting
in the bedroom, fighting in a whole way, working three

(03:39):
mm hmm, kicking of the door of a chinge ah,
getting punched kicked Trevor, the the younger boy coming in

(04:11):
something to hit me overhead with the heavy glass bottle
that couts thousands of dollars damage. I'm not worried about that.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Yeah, Trevor. What about your arms and your hands? How
are you going now in terms of being able to
use them?

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Again? My right hand less my index finger as in
used quite well?

Speaker 1 (05:03):
Okay, so you no longer have your index finger.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
My indescinger does wrong the play? No, that's haund I
can do very little, Trevor.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Again, I'm not one hundred percent sure what we can
and can't say, so I don't want to jeopardize the
case in any way depending on where it's at through
the courts. But you're the victim of a terrible crime
in which a machete or an edged weapon was used.

(05:46):
I mean, how do you feel about the discussions now
that are taking place about the possibility of banning or
making it more difficult to purchase a machete?

Speaker 2 (06:00):
Yeah, that's an incredibly difficult question. Uh. What is a weapon?
All right? Michetti? Hannah the Chile screw driver? That makes

(06:33):
it incredibly difficult?

Speaker 1 (06:36):
Yeah, well, you you have absolutely hit the nil on
the head there, Because people are using anything and everything
as weapons, aren't they?

Speaker 2 (06:48):
The one thing I would like to see because I
believe I'm not hundred birth that the police said have

(07:15):
the power stop search.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
Yeah, I think you're right they do in some instances.
They certainly do have the power to be able to
do those stop and searchers. But you know, I think
you're right. If they are able to do that on
you know, anybody, it could make a difference.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
Do you think, Uh, I think it would be an official.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Trevor. What else do you think needs to change following
your experience? Obviously you know that stopping and searching people
for weapons. You know, in light of what has happened
to you and the utter trauma that you've lived through.
What else do you think needs to change?

Speaker 2 (08:16):
H I think I don't care about age. Kids should
be accountable and not just a snack on arrest. The

(08:43):
parents should be accountable.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
Trevor. I agree with you, and I know that a
lot of people listening this morning will agree with you.
I know it's difficult for you to be able to
come on air and speak to us this morning. I
know from what you are telling me. You know, life
has been tough since that terrible, terrible morning when they

(09:13):
got into your homes. I really appreciate you talking to
me this morning.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
It has consumed my last six months. It's going to
I have three to four metical appointments each week and
that's like to carry on for the next six months.

(09:49):
I used to the top the independent. I am now dependent.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
Trevor. How hard has that been for you?

Speaker 2 (10:09):
Very very difficult internally. Yeah, for me to act for
help has not been easy, Trevor.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
Like I said, I know it's not easy for you
to come on here today and talk to us, but
I think it is so incredibly important for people to
realize the impact that crime and that the use of weapons,
the ongoing and the long term impact that it has

(10:47):
on victims, not just physically but in every aspect of
your life.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
Now, the attack has not broken me. He has only
trifled me.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
Oh, Trevor, you're a bloody champion mate. That's made me
want to cry. Good on you. You should be really
proud of yourself that it hasn't broken you. And and
you yeah, you're a good man.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
Well, less timon in this city. I'll drop some tissue.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
Off, Lucky. I've always got something here in the studio, Trevor.
I really appreciate you talking to us today. Trevor, you're
a tough You are a tough tough man and uh
and I I know that you are going to continue

(11:50):
to be a tough man and and carry that strength
through in every aspect of your life. Thank you so
much for having a chat with us this more.

Speaker 2 (12:01):
I live by a simple saying, what's that needless desperandum?
Carver on them legitimous.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
And Trevor, what does that mean?

Speaker 2 (12:17):
Don't let the bass has ground you down?
