Speaker 1 (00:00):
There's a brand new series coming to screens this month,
telling the story of an Australian's journey of survival throughout
World War Two and how it affects his life through
the following years. Take a look at The Narrow Road
to the Deep North.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Starring Jacob Alrdie, Simon Baker and Odessa Young. The series
is already gaining rave reviews from right around the world.
I was lucky enough to catch up with the all
star cast a little earlier today. Jacob Odessa Simon, Welcome
to the Morning show. How good is this three Aussies?
You're home getting to promote an absolutely beautiful project.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
I mean, how does it feel to be doing that?
Speaker 4 (00:39):
It's so good.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Don't all speak at once? No, it's amazing, is it.
We were talking and you said, this is so good.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
No, it's genuinely surreal to be working with such great
Australian artists and to be a part of this show
and to be able to come home and promote it.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
You are to be able to do that You've got
family who you're watching? I knowing, right, steering right.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Actually it was a bit of pressure, but that must
be really lovely to have family around.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
Yeah, so it's kind of the first time that I've
been able to have everyone in one place.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
So, yeah, do they keep you grounded?
Speaker 4 (01:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Would your mum be saying, sit up straight? I'm just
I love that. It's so terrific for you to be home. Yeah,
it's lovely, It's really nice. What's the best thing about
being back Just.
Speaker 5 (01:30):
Getting to see my family. I mean, they're not here
watching me today, but.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
It's okay, hold of at them. I don't love you
as much. I know, I know, that's okay. I love
you guys too. Yeah, it's just amazing.
Speaker 5 (01:44):
I don't get to see my family very often, being
you know, at least twenty four hours away from and yeah,
it's just lovely to be able to get every minute.
My sisters and all my parents came to the premiere
last night test to grab it. Tell us about Narrow Road.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
It's been described Jacob as a show as much about
love as war.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
How would you describe it and what made you say yes?
Speaker 4 (02:07):
Yeah, I mean, at its core, it's it's it's an
incredibly human story and for me saying yes just came
straight from it being held by Justin Curzell. I wanted
to work with him my whole life. So it was
like he could have handed me any project and I
would have done it with him.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
It's adapted from an award winning book. Did you which
came first? Did you read the book and then go
I would love to do this one day?
Speaker 2 (02:31):
No?
Speaker 3 (02:31):
I never.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
I'd never read the book, which a lot of people had,
so I had no kind of kind of idea, and
Justin gave me the book, and then when I realized
that that's what we were going to make together, it
was just yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
You devourt it. Yeah, Simon aware of a similar vintage.
Do you remember.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Do you remember when Ghillippoi dropped the Mel Gibson Mark Martley? No,
we did, We didn't drop it is so new, But
do you remember I remember going as a as a
schoolgirl history and went and sort with the profound effect
that had on me as a piece of Australian storytelling.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Do you feel similar about this? Look?
Speaker 6 (03:08):
I think there's some sort of similarities that you can draw.
I mean at the essence of Gillimpilly was this love
story between two to mate and that heartbreak of lost
in that story. And I think this Richard Flanagan's book
and Justin's what Justin's done with this is his balance
that the atrocities and the harrowing hardship of war with
(03:35):
a love story, but not just a love story within
you know, back in, but a love story between friends
and the notion of Matshif And that's that's what's really
powerful and moving about it.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
The wall side of it is the story of course,
of the Burma Railway. Physically, how demanding was that, Jacob,
because prison of war and that that comes with, you know,
obviously physical constraints.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
As an actor, what was that like?
Speaker 4 (04:05):
Yeah, I mean it took it took a lot of
dedication and care from all the boys that sort of
had to go through it. But I mean it's not
even remotely close to the the sort of actual circumstance,
so there's always an element of you know, you're not
quite there. But it was demanding and grueling, but it
also it just made us fall deeper in love with
(04:26):
each other and the bond was kind of made immediate.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
You know, someone you've played so many international roles, good.
Speaker 7 (04:33):
Play Nay, Yeah, I've played a few of them at
late And you know, it's interesting because the scene Jacob,
like early in young in his career coming back here
and helping getting something going.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
I have a lot of respect for that, you know.
I think that was.
Speaker 6 (04:54):
Doing that kind of thing for me was when I
initially went to the States in the nineties and you know,
the nineties, my goal was to always be able to
come back here and get stuff done because we don't
make a lot of stuff here and it's sometimes difficult
to make projects here. So it's important that we see
(05:15):
our lives reflected on the screen and told from our perspective.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Congratulations on it all. It looks amazing.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
I think people here in Australia will get to see
it later this month. If they want to sneak peek
of you, Jacob, they can pick up Vogue Australia.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Some really terrific shots.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
If you're taken by your sister, it was an amazing photographer.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
She's an incredible artist.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yeah, and so usually the relationship between talent and photographers.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
Like oh yeah, work a baby, it looks amazing.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
But it's it's like get out of my it's.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Like move to the lift box, you know.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
With her, I'm like, come take a picture of me.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Oh really, my sister is here? Is he needy. Is
he needy? She's you know what I didn't give.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
You five years old again?
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Work Congratulations.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
It is a beautiful it's a beautiful tale and it's
it's one absolutely worth saying.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
Congratulations, Thank you very much. I'm welcome home.
Speaker 4 (06:11):
Hey, thank you, thank you.
Speaker 3 (06:13):

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Yes, I know my twenty year old nieces are very
jealous of me at the moment.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
What I loved was was that you respected his personal space.
It was maybe two feet distance between the two of you.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
I sat in my chair until.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Until you've got a photo after the chat, which you
guys have been dating for three years?
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Can God bless his little cotton socks. But he pulled
me into the yes he did.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Was there waiting.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Its a hard lord, and then you've got the you've
got the friends and family there.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Remember I was waiting for obviously I wanted one of
the four of us with Ardessa and Simon, and it
looked look I just had to do what Jacob told
me to do.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
That extra photo was just so it didn't look creepy.
That that's my that's my look.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
They were very generous with their time. They were on sunrise.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
They stuck around for the morning in their personal space
and oh, look, I'll be putting that on the GrITT
It things like stay shued, it'll be there.
