Ediot Woodmark, Anthony Elwenzi's first official visit to both Vanuatu
and the Solomon Islands since being re elected. That deal,
if finalized with Vanuatu, could see five hundred million dollars
over a decade flow into development, climate and security priorities there.
It comes as China has emerged as a major player

(04:24):
in Vanuatu. Australia wants to be the major security partner.
Anthony Albinezi and the Vanuatu Prime Minister Jothamnapat will then
fly together onto the Pacific Islands Forum in Honiara, the
capital of the Solomon Islands. The opening ceremony was held
yesterday with plenty of pageantry and we've seen a lot
of gifts flowing. There was some sixty one police cars

(04:47):
provided by Australia, but not to be outdone, about one
hundred given by China, with plenty of soft power on
display here. The Prime Minister will arrive in Honiara tomorrow.

a decision by west Point Military Academy to sell an

(07:00):
awards event honoring actor Tom Hanks. If the US correspondent
Rob Scott rob the President clearly not a fan of
the Oscar winning actor, no Eddie.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
But look, the feeling is very much mutual because in
the past Tom Hanks has been a very vocal critic
of Donald Trump, describing him as a self involved gas
bag and if he ever got elected, that would be
a dark day now. Hanks was said to receive the
Sylvanus Thayer Award from the prestigious west Point Military Academy
later that this month that to recognize all the work

he's done through his acting and producing career, basically to
portray America's armed services and its veterans in a positive life,

West Point says the decision will allow it.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
To focus on its core mission, which is all about
getting its cadets ready to fight and to win wars,
and Donald Trump is cheering the decision from the sidelines.
He says, it's an important move and we don't need destructive,
woke recipients getting our cherished American awards. So it appears
the actor is yet another victim of the political climate
here in the United States at the time when military

(08:03):
academies like West Point are in the president's crosshairs because
just a couple of months ago, the administration ordered an
end to diversity and equity programs in federal institutions. So
while we know the ceremony is off, what we don't
know yet is where the Hanks is still going to
get this award, perhaps in a private event or some
sort of other format that remains to be seen.
