Speaker 1 (00:03):
Look at these sends.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
The new pontiff is Cardinal Robert Pravoss, their first ever
American pope. He was greeted by a jubilant crowd at
the Vatican. Pope Leo the fourteenth appeared on the central
balcony at Sir Peter's Basilica around seventy minutes after white
smoke billowed from the chimney on the Sistine Chapel. Let's
(00:25):
go live to our team of reporters who were right
there first, to europe correspondent Jackie Robson at the Vatican, Jackie,
History in the making. And you were right there in
the middle of that crowd.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
What was it like to be there?
Speaker 3 (00:38):
There was almost like the crowd took a collective breath,
questioning could it be that the cardinals have elected the
first American pope in the Catholic Church's two thousand year history.
But this is the moment Cardinal Robert Prevost emerged on
the central balcony as Pope Leo the fourteenth. Now, there's
(01:11):
often been a taboo about electing an American pope, given
the power, the geopolitical power that the US already wields.
But given that Pope Lego the fourteenth spent much of
his time in Peru. He will have been seen as
a more universal candidate. His name follows Pope Lego the thirteenth,
(01:34):
through championed social justice. He would have been on many
lists had he been Italian, given that he heads up
a powerful a powerful Vatican department that appoints bishops, but
the bookies hadn't backed him because of his American status.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
He was.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
He is sixty nine years old.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
He was born in Chicago and spent much of his
time as a missionary in Peru. That means he'll have
a deep understanding of poverty and migrants. Tonight he spoke
a lot about peace and continuing the work of Pope
france As although we are learning that he'll be a
more discreete version and not just a carbon copy of
(02:15):
the late Pope. He was appointed cardinal by Pope Francis
in twenty twenty through three. He said the Church needs
to build bridges and bring people together. He speaks multiple languages.
Tonight he was speaking Italian. He also spoke in Spanish,
giving a shout at to the people he worked with
(02:35):
in Peru. He also spoke in Latin and emerged in
the traditional dress, but he is considered a moderate. Let's
take a listen to how the crowd reacted.
Speaker 5 (02:46):
It's a surprise. Emvery a pontificate comes with a surprise,
and I'm sure that many people are surprised, if not
everybody is surprised that it is Padinal Robert Prevos. This
means that the church we go back, always forward, always forward.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
I was expecting ed Italian. It's okay, let me see,
we need time.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
I'm glad he is from America. The US President Donald
Trump has reacted almost immediately, saying it's a great honor
for the country and he's excited to meet the new pope.
This will be seen by Catholics as the Holy Spirit
bringing them a new pope to lead the church.
Speaker 6 (03:29):
Forward on an amazing moment.
Speaker 5 (03:31):
Thank you, Jackie.
Speaker 7 (03:33):
Let's go to Andrew McCormack in Melbourne. So maca Australian
Catholics are expected to flock to church early this morning
for Mass.
Speaker 8 (03:43):
That's a right chervo. Unlike the one half billion Catholics
right around the world, most of the five million here
in Australia would have been fast asleep when this announcement
was made. And that white smoke rose over the Vatican,
so many of those Catholics in Australia waking up to
find that there's history and the first pope ever born
in the USA. So we'll get a feel of what
(04:05):
Ossie Catholics feel of this new appointment this morning with
Mats here at seven am at Saint Patrick's Cathedral here
in Melbourne. Of course Anthony Albanezi as well visited here
when Pope Francis died last month, so we'll get a
sense of obviously the PM as well reacting. But at
this stage on social media so far, a lot of
the archbishops right across Australia welcoming this new announcement.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
S thank you Maca.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
He's been called the least American of the Americans.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
He has Italian, French and Spanish roots.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
His first words were peace be with you, and of
course he spoke in Italian when he said that.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
Yeah, lovely, let's get some mornings.
Speaker 7 (04:42):
Now here's mom.
Speaker 9 (04:43):
Cheva, Matt, thank you, good morning. We go straight to
breaking news and a shocking drive by shooting has unfolded
in Sydney's West. Let's go straight to Liam Tappa, who
is live in Mount Druitt.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Now, Liam, what more do we know?
Speaker 6 (04:57):
Yeah, good morning, min Well, I can tell you that
this is a huge crime It's a whole block. Police
have cordoned off here because they've got a number of
police officers now going from house to house because at
this stage they're not clear whether this was a targeted
attack or if it's a completely random shooting where a
black Hatchback has been driving down frank Street and Mount
(05:18):
drew it because we're hearing reports from a number of
neighbors here who say that a car was shooting randomly
at houses. So police are just trying to firm this
up whether that is the case or there was one
particular house that was that it has been targeted, because
forensics are focusing in on one of the houses here
because that seems to have had the most gunshots into
(05:38):
the front, into the front windows and the front walls.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
But at this.
Speaker 6 (05:42):
Stage it's unclear if those people in that house were targeted.
Fortunately no one was injured, but this does remain a
huge crime scene. Forensics and detectives actually have just arrived
here within the past few minutes, so they're really ramping
up their investigations here that mode. But at this stage
a black hatchback was seen leaving Frank Street and Mount Jewett.
So those people responsible right now are at large. So
(06:04):
two operations for police, the crime scene here, but also
trying to track down those gunman Monds.
Speaker 9 (06:09):
Yes, all right, keeps informed throughout the morning, won't you,
Land Thank you? Breaking Overnight a truck fire has closed
a major motorway in Queensland. As many as eleven fire
crews were called to tackle the blaze. Let's go live
now to Georgie. Chumney, Now, Georgia. Do we know if
anyone was injured?
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Good morning one.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
Well, remarkably, when you take a look at these photos,
the truck driver managed to get out safely without any injuries.
This was a huge blaze overnight. It started just after
twelve thirty and as you said, are required a huge
number of firefighters to put it out. Eleven trucks, including
water tankers were brought in this stage this morning. The
(06:47):
Logan Motorway westbound lanes remain closed. That is going to
cause huge traffic chaos as we head towards peak hour.
Behind me is the Pacific Motorway and traffic is already
banking up. So commuters coming from Logan as well well
as the Gold Coast. They are in for a very
slow commute today. No word yet from police as to
when that rob will reopen. Has been so intense that
(07:08):
firefighters have been required to continue dousing it as reckers
have been trying to take away that truck wreckage.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
So a very slow day. Commuters heading in towards Brisbane.
Speaker 9 (07:17):
Sitting camera nightmare shocker. All right, thanks very much, Georgie.
Accused mushroom murderer Aaron Patterson choked back tears in court
as her daughter's pre recorded evidence was played before the jury.
Let's golf to Teagan Doling. Now, who's in Melbourne tea
and good morning to you. What did she reveal?
Speaker 1 (07:36):
Yeah, good morning mon.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
The nine year old girl, as we know, is giving
evidence in her mother's triple murder trial. And the interviewers
said to her in this pre recorded interview, do you
know why I want to talk to you?
Speaker 1 (07:47):
She said, is about the lunch.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
She then went on to reveal that her mum said
that she was inviting her grandparents and Ian and Heather
over to talk about adult things, and that she and
her brother went to McDonald's and the movies.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
The day of the lunch.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
She also revealed to the jury that they did in
fact eat the leftover meat the night after, but saying
that her mum was feeling quite sick in the guts
and that she went to the toilet at least ten times.
We also heard from paramedics, doctors, and police in the
witness box yesterday.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
The police officer who attended that welfare check.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
On Aaron Patterson insists that the accused was very compliant
and actually led him to the red lidded bin outside
which had the leftover beef Wellington in there that he
was then able to take to the hospital. There was
a nurse who treated the accused when she arrived at
the Lee and Gatha Hospital. She told the jury that
she didn't actually think Aaron Patterson looked that unwell when
(08:39):
she was comparing her to obviously Heather and ian Ian
at that time couldn't even lift his head off of
a pillow, and that mom. There was also a paramedic
who gave evidence she was the one who had to
transfer and Aaron Patterson from len Gatha Hospital that ninety
minute journey to Dandylong Hospital. She said, despite the diarrhea
symptoms she didn't need to go to the toilet.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
One she complained of.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
A headache, but she was very chatty during that transfer
and mom, is actually every chance.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
That this trial could wrap up early.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
The jury heard yesterday the judge telling them that it
is expected it will conclude before the six weeks.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
That it was set down for Aaron Patterson maintains.
Speaker 9 (09:17):
Her innocence, Teagan, thank you. Just Enterprise has announced that
she's leaving the Nationals Party to join the Liberals, with
reports that she's seeking a leadership position within the party.
Let's go live now to Isabel Mullen, who's in camera now. Isy,
this has angered some of her constituents.
Speaker 10 (09:34):
Yeah, it's an interesting time here in Canberra. Mon, good morning.
There are those reports this morning that Disenterprise is actually
looking to run as Angers Taylor's deputy, leaving the Nationals
for the Liberals as that leadership race heats up Bankers
Taylor and Susan Lee are broadly tipped to be the
front runners in that race. But there is concern within
(09:55):
the moderate faction of the Liberal Party at least about
Just Enterprise's mag comment in the election campaign where she
said that we need to make Australia Great again, sounding
a lot like Donald Trump, but later denying she made
that comment. A lot of hurt and upset within the
National Party today.
Speaker 7 (10:15):
It's very sad because I think just since has done
enormous damage to her reputation. I think, but she's going
to be elected as a senator sitting in the National's
Party and that's what she stood at the election for.
And I don't know, Shari, how you can go to
the people one week and say I'm going to represent
this party in the Nation's Deparliament and then the very
next week turn around. So I actually I've changed my mind.
(10:35):
I'm going to go a different side.
Speaker 10 (10:37):
Liberals will decide their new leader and deputy leader on
Tuesday at ten am.
Speaker 9 (10:43):
All right, easy, thank you. King Charles has called Anthony
Oveneasy to congratulate him on Labour's election victory. Overnight. The
Prime Minister posted on x saying that it was an
honor to speak with his Majesty and thanked King Charles
for his heartfelt congratulations.
