Speaker 1 (00:03):
Well, good morning. Crowds have gathered in Saint Peter's Square
to wait the puff of smoke from the Vatican chimney
signaling whether the conclave of Cardinals has elected a new Pope.
Let's go live to europe correspondent Jackie Robson, who's at
the Vatican. We're just seeing the black smoke come out
of that chimney right now, Jackie, which means they haven't
quite yet decided, Eddie.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
It was an extra long wait to see that black smoke,
and those hours of waiting had speculation running wild that
maybe the one hundred and thirty three cardinals had already
come to a consensus, a two thirds majority, and elected
a new pope. But now we know that that is
not the case, signaled by that black smoke you can

(00:48):
see right now. And it's not unusual that we haven't
seen a new pope on the first vote. The last
time that happened was more than eighty years ago, back
in nine teen thirty nine with Pope Highus. Earlier, we
saw the cardinals sequestered into the Systeine Chapel where they

(01:08):
took their oath of secrecy before that voting got underway
among them was our Australian Cardinal McColo Bichok, who stood
out in in a black headdress. He is a Ukrainian
Greek Catholic. That headdress obviously tied to that particular church,

(01:31):
but earlier today the day started with a mass at
Saint Peter's Basilica, where all the cardinals were praying for
divine guidance on how to elect a new pope. The
Dean of the Cardinals urged his peers to put their

(01:51):
personal feelings aside and only think of the Church and humanity.
He also asked the Holy Spirit to provide a new
pope that we'll be able to manage the complex and
difficult turning point in history. But of course, tonight no
new pope. The next vote, Eddie, will be tomorrow morning.

(02:13):
It won't be any earlier than at ten point thirty.
We may see smoke around midday, but so far no
new pope just yet, Eddie.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
So Jackie is a live pictures we're showing you right
now of that chimney emitting that black smoke. So what
will happen now to all the people who have gathered
there in the square? Do they go home and come
back tomorrow expecting them to stay overnight. Clearly all the
cardinals will go home and as you say, regroup tomorrow
morning and have another go.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Yeah. Absolutely, So there's tens of thousands of people that
have packed here into Saint Peter's Square. It is tightly
managed by security, so they will need to move out
of the square before that vote happens again tomorrow morning.
Clapping and a lot of gasps as the smoke came out,

(03:04):
given there was so much anticipation that maybe we would
have seen a new pope tonight, but that is not
the case. As you mentioned, the cardinals will then they
will now be going to dinner and then they will
stay at the Casa Santa Marta in tight lockdown until
they can decide on who should lead the Catholic Church forward.

(03:25):
So no doubt, tens of thousands of people will come
back here to Saint Peter's Square and watch that chimney
for what happens next.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Yeah, they're not mostly remember that smoke that is conclusively black.
Of course, they're waiting for the white smoke to come
out of that chimney. Thank you so much, Jackie. That
news just breaking from Rome. No pope decided as yet,
but they will regroup tomorrow. Try the news this morning.
For the first time, the voice of Bondi Junction killer
Joel Caucci has been heard publicly at an inquest into

(03:54):
the mass stabbing that killed six people. The recordings released
by the coroner were taken during run ins with Queensland
Police more than a year before his deadly rampage. Couchi's
dad had confiscated weapons, worried his son's mental health was
deteriorating further.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
You will not returning and I have to really afford
to replacement. What kind of property are we talking? Nice? Nice? No?
I said, as like a us I mean, and I
have of for three or so.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
The inquest also heard evidence on what led to security delays.
Proceedings will continue in that in quest today. The children
of the three deceased victims of that allegedly deadly mushroom
lunch have detailed their parents' last days alive in court yesterday.
They emotionally described what it was like to see their
parents deteriorated hospital. Don and Gail Patterson's daughter Anna wept

(04:44):
as she relived the moment she raced to Dandenong Hospital
after they fell severely ill. Heather and Ian. Wilkinson's daughter
Ruth said she was surprised to hear her mother had
been to the lunch, saying she viewed miss Patterson as
more of an acquaintance. That trial continues today for the
Coalition leader Peter Dutton says he's making a graceful exit

(05:06):
from politics following his brutal election defeat. Mister Ducton is
the first opposition leader to lose his own seat in
an election. He's refused to be drawn on who he
believes should take his role.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Thank you in reference for a leader to succeedition, think.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
The best bottle I've seen is where leaders former make
a graceful exit from politics and maintain their graceful silence.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
So that'll be my novel.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Susan Leon Angus Taylor are the top contenders to replace him.
