Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good morning. We want to get straight to breaking news now.
And the Victorian town of Yarra Junction is reeling this
morning after police shot a man dead. Officers were called
to a home on the Warburton Highway yesterday evening following
reports of a man violently assaulting a woman known to him.
Police say that they saw the man assaulting that woman
before they opened fire. Paramedics were called, but the man

(00:26):
couldn't be revived. The woman has been flown to hospital
with serious injuries. A fifty seven year old groom and
his groomsmen are recovering in hospital this morning after their
wedding bus crashed in the New South Wales Hunter Valley.
The minivan was only three minutes from the venue when
it rolled down an embankment. The pair suffered head and

(00:47):
leg injuries. The driver and three others were also taken
to hospital. Two years ago, ten people died on their
way to a wedding in a similar crash just fifteen
kilometers from this siteh Brisbane's Olympics infrastructure body has backtracked
on claims that its proposed National Aquatic Center will cost
taxpayers more than one billion dollars to build. Acting CEO

(01:11):
Nick Elliott has clarified that the price tag was an
early estimate covering multiple venues, including the revamped Chandler Precinct.
Final costs won't be known until a project valuation is complete.
There's mounting pressure on the Reserve Bank to slash interest
rates again, with the latest inflation figures bringing good news

(01:33):
for mortgage holders. Let's go live now to Josh Martin,
who's in Cambra. Josh, good morning to use. So multiple
cuts are now possible morning one.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
That's right if you're a home moment. Maybe not time
to pop the champagne bottles yet, but getting closer. We
saw quarterly inflation data yesterday, the best result in four years.
Inflation fell from two point four percent down to two
point one percent, and Reserve Bank Governor Michelle Bullock and
her team will be considering them these numbers where they
next meet on August twelve. The official cash righter is

(02:04):
currently sitting at three point eight five percent, but economists
are now widely tipping that to fall and by multiple cuts.
As you say, they held last month, which was a
bit of a shock, but unemployment has gone up to
four point three percent. These inflation numbers are the best
they've been in four years. That long period of inflation
after COVID nineteen and the pandemic has finally come to

(02:25):
an end. So good news if you've got a mortgage
this morning.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
All right, thanks very much. Joshkama, MP turned convicted rapist
Gareth Ward has been refused bail, spending his first night
in a Sydney jail. Ward was found guilty on four
sexual abuse charges last week. A judge yesterday ruled that
he should have had his bow revoked and be put
behind bars until sentencing in September. Despite being taken into custody,

(02:52):
Ward remains the MP for Kama, complete with his taxpayer
funded salary. There are now calls for Ward to be
booted from Parliament. More arrests and charges are expected over
the fire bombing attack on Melbourne's a Dash Synagogue. It
follows counter terror raids on properties across the city that
saw one man taken into custody. The twenty one year

(03:15):
old is being questioned this morning, accused of being paid
to carry out the attack. Police believe the firebombing may
have been ordered from overseas, with the mastermind behind Melbourne's
tobacco Ward chasm Hammad at the top of the suspect list.
The trio of Australians accused of gunning down and killing
a Melbourne father in Bali has been chained at the

(03:37):
legs and dressed up in disguises. Police say that they
wore it during last month's attack a twenty six year
old Melbourne man, and he's co accused and now facing
the death penalty. If they're charged and convicted of that crime, you.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
Said you're not guilty. Will you be fighting official charges if.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
They can't, Yes, what do you make of the conditions
you're facing in prison?

Speaker 1 (04:02):
The dramatic reconstruction is a sign that Balinese police are
nearing the end of their official investigation and will soon
lay formal charges. Anthony Albernesi could move to recognize Palestine
as a state as early as September, when the Prime
Minister is due to address the UN General Assembly in
New York. Yesterday, mister Albanesi said that he sees a

(04:24):
moment of opportunity to advance forward for Israelis and also Palestinians.
The PM stopped short of matching British Prime Minister Kiirs
Stamer's pledge to recognize Palestine if hostilities continue in Gaza.
An historic copper mine in Queensland's northwest has closed overnight,
marking the end of an era for the town of

(04:45):
Mount Isa. Only seven years was there as workers walked
out of the Glencore coppermine for the last time at midnight.
The site had been in operation for seven decades.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
Bittersweet for me.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
So it's been a big part of my life. But yeah,
it's going to be a shock to the town. I
think man's going to impact the town big time.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
But you know, life moves on. I guess I know.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Miners the deepest copper mine in the country, reaching almost
two kilometers underground. It helped transform Mountaser into one of
Australia's most iconic mining towns. The owner, glen Core, says
it's no longer financially viable, the town now facing an
uncertain future. The family of convicted mushroom killer Aaron Patterson

(05:30):
could soon receive compensation following a major move by the
Victorian courts. A restraining order prevents the triple convicted Gippsland
killer's property from being sold, opening the door for compensation
claims from her victim's families. So far, no claims have
been lodged. The property has become an attraction with a
steady stream of visitors since Patterson was convicted of her

(05:53):
crimes anyone. The parents of slain Queensland teen Jack Beasley
are set to launch his legacy over seats as they
take their landmark Jack's Law to the UK. Jack's parents,
Brett and Belinda Beasley, will meet with UK politicians and
Scotland Yard in a bid to reduce knife crime after
New South Wales, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory

(06:15):
all adopted the legislation. Jack was seventeen when he was
stabbed to death on the Gold Coast. Jack's Law allows
police to scan people for knives and has already seen
more than one thousand weapons taken off Queensland streets alone.
Ozzy Osborne's family have accompanied the heavy metal stars Coffin
on an emotional final journey through his home city of Birmingham.

(06:39):
Europe correspondent Ben Downey has the very latest good morning
to you, Ben Now. Tens of thousands of fans lined
the streets there to give Ozzie a fitting sendoff.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Well, it was just over three weeks ago when Black
Sabbath played the back to the beginning concert what was
supposed to be a farewell performance, but even death couldn't
prevent the Prince of Darkness one final onen core in Birmingham.
It was a blackout, thousands lining the streets chanting the
name of the godfather of heavy metal. The Brass Band
played Iron Man out of Ozzy Osborne's Coffins procession. Birmingham

(07:12):
locals brummies who felt a kinship with the rockstar, sharing
in the grief that gripped Ozzie's family, wife Sharon and
children Kelly and Jack, who laid flowers at the Black
Sabbath Bridge. I walk the same streets I saw them
live years ago, had a benefit gig right in.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
Front of me. He was It was very emotional. I
got upset about it.

Everyone's come together to celebrate his life. Lining the streets

even born after his pivot to reality TV. Proof of
Ozzie Osbourne's lasting legacy.
