Speaker 1 (00:00):
Great per flick with benoshe had time to grab the
popcorn and chopped offs were after the movies, say Thriller
that defined the nineties. So now it's back the remake
of I Know What You Did Last Summer? And Benochet's
here to let us know if it's worth a watch.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Kid, He smiley, Hey, you're doing so to be honest,
did it make you jump a couple of times? A
couple of times? These slasher films are all about the
jump scares, And you're right, this film was, you know,
this seminal moment in the nineteen nineties, and I think
people of a certain age when they think back to it, go, oh, yeah,
I Know what you Did Last Summer. That was a
huge movie. But I think what they're actually doing is
(00:39):
they're probably remembering Scream that came out a year earlier. Yes,
and so Scream was the real icon of slasher movies
from the nineties, meta, all of that kind of stuff.
It was amazing. I Know What You Did Last Summer
was kind of the ripoff of Scream. It was written
by the same guy, rushed into production and came out
about a year later, and in fact, the studio behind
(01:02):
Scream sued the studio that did I Know What You
Did Last Summer because they put on the poster from
the creator of Scream, which was Wes Craven, and he
had nothing to do with it. I Know What You
Did lst some And also if you think about that
original movie, like, of all casts in the nineteen nineties,
can you get a better cast than this? For I
Know What You Did Last Summer? You had Ryan Felipe,
(01:23):
Jennifer love Hewitt, you had Sarah Michelle Geller and Freddie
Prince Junior, like those four together. Unfortunately, the film was
only okay, and then it spawned, you know, an entire franchise.
There was the sequel I Still Know What You Did
Last Summer, which was set sort of on a college campus,
and then a couple of movies made for TV movies
(01:44):
after that TV series. None of them were really very good.
So now along comes It's sort of technically it's a
sequel to I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,
but it also serves as a reboot of the franchise.
They basically tell the story of the first movie again,
which for those who came in late, a bunch of
young kids get implicated in the death of a random stranger.
(02:09):
They decide instead of going to the authorities and report it,
they cover it up, vowed never to speak of it again.
And then a year later they gather back in this
small coastal town and one of them, you know, gets
a little note under the door that says, I know
what you did last summer.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Keep your guessing, Ben.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Yeah. Well, that's the thing with these movies, right like
they they put up all of these potential red herrings.
Everybody that comes onto the screen, you go, oh, they
did it. Yep, it's the podcast. It's a true crime podcast.
Definitely her, it's the mayor, it's this, it's the that
and so. And then one after another, these leads get
ruled out when usually they get murdered. That's usually the
(02:47):
way they get rubbed out of the picture. And so
the murdering, of course, is the same same I guess
method as the original movie, which you're talking about, sort
of the Fisherman. This guy dressed in sort of all
a male or female dressed in a sort of fisherman's
slicker with the sou wester hat. Andy k is a dirty,
great big hook that he slashes people with. And you
(03:10):
have to try and figure out who's doing it, why
they're doing it, and who's going to be killed next.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
Basically, what about the cast anyone we know?
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Yeah, there's a couple of people in the cast that's
worth pointing out, a young cast. The two notables Madeline Klein,
who was from Outer Banks. She's fantastic as sort of
this ditzy blonde who doesn't know what's going on. And
then you've got Chase sweet Wonders, who the name might
not be familiar, but anybody who's watched Seth Rogan's the
studio that's just been nominated for every Emmy, she is
(03:39):
one of the best characters in that show. So she
is a star on the rise. So the production getting
her at an early stage in her career was great.
Those two are amazing. The rest are only okay. The
film itself.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Anyone who love the original, is there enough nostalgia to
make them happy?
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Well, put it this way, Jennifer love Hewitt and Freddie
Pinn's Junior make a come back. But at one point
Jennifer love Hewitt, actually her character actually says nostalgia is overrated.
And I got to say, Jennifer love Hewitt, you hit
the nail on the head already.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Been out of five chock tops. How many are you're
giving the remaker? I know what you did last summer.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
There's one great dream sequence. So because and because of
those two young actors that I mentioned, I'm gonna give
it two and a half lucky Lucky to get it,
Lucky to get it.
