Speaker 1 (00:00):
Coming Out Black is recorded on unseated Aboriginal land. We
wish to acknowledge and pay our respects to our elders
past present, and extend that respect to mob listening today.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
My name's Matigue a Little and my name is Courtney Hagen,
and we're two queer Indigenous women passionate about representation for
our community.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
We've created this podcast to share our stories and we
want you to join us on the journey. You're listening
to Coming Out Black.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
In the same room today, I know, I'm so excited.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
So it's been a hot minute.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
It's been a couple of hot minutes.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Sorry about it.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yeah, you know, it happens. But I was saying to
Courtney before we recorded, I was like, let's not beat
ourselves up about how long it's been since we've done this.
We would have full time jobs. We both do a
bunch of stuff in community. I was in my uber
on my way to your house today and I was
just like, I'm really excited, Like I'm really looking forward
to recording today, Like, and it's been a while since

(01:02):
I've been excited about stuff. Like, you know, it's easy
to be overrun when you've got this project that you
want to do, but then like all of these other
things in your life happening. So it's the first time
in like a little while that I've been like really
excited to record same.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
And I must also say that it's really weird to
look at you physically and look.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
At your eyes.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
It feels almost too intimate for us because I we're
just recording like virtually, but it is really cool.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
It's so excited today. This is very exciting.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
So yeah, let's do a little life update. I don't
know how long it's been. Let's not acknowledge it's.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Been a while. If you want to tell us on
Instagram how long it's been. Good for it.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
We went out to get milk. We're back now we've returned.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Yeah, life update. Oh my god. So I think last
time our life update was like, well, actually, you know,
the interesting thing is you haven't heard an episode in
a very long time. I swear to you. Courtney and
I have recorded episodes, like throughout Lockdown, we've recorded episodes,
but for whatever reason, either it took a just to

(02:03):
like edit and then I was like, oh, the time's gone.
Now it's no longer like fresh on people's minds. We
have recorded, Like I want to say, at least like
four episodes. That's not a lot. So we've done life
updates then, but never actually posted them.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
And to be fair like, given the like the time,
I think they can just stay in the vault.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Probably, I think definitely. Yeah, So what's been happening, tell
me all about it.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
Let me feel you in.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Okay, new job, new city, and I live in Sydney,
I work in a different sport.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Yeah, really loving it.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Still spotty lesbian there. I can't get that up.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
No, I can't. That's really about it.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
My like my dog's a little bit older, I'm still
just an absolute noodle all the time.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Still in love.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
I was saying to you the other day that I
love that we have reviews the wrong but like we
have like your review of meeting the partner that you
have now, like oh yeah, I want to say it.
She's like didn't you call her like sunshine or something
at the time, Like I love that we have that
in an old episode and now you're still in love
and like technically living together. But she'll move here eventually.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
Yeah, or you'll move together, yeah, like upon reflection like
oh cringey. But then I'm like also I'm like, oh, well,
like you know, I love love.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
It's cool.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
Like people that listened to it asked me about her,
and like I remember when we first met and we
were like releasing stuff as it was happening.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
We're like, oh my god, like how's things going?

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Like what? Yeah? But yeah, I know, like that's cool,
but yeah, what about you? What's your life update?

Speaker 2 (03:39):
My life update? Well, first of all, I mean obviously
we also have me meeting Teagan or starting to date
Teagan on the podcast as well, and I've definitely had
like people be like, oh, I was listening to your
old episode of the podcast, and every time we talked
about a girl, I thought like, oh, is this Teagan?
You've met Tigan now? And then it wasn't. And then
they finally got to the episode, but they're like, oh,
you're dating even now, and I was like, oh, that's

(04:01):
a bit funny, but like, is this Teaken not different?

Speaker 3 (04:04):
Girl?

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Don't worry about it. But that was funny and I
are good. Yeah, we live together now as well, which
is really exciting. Yeah, with Neil my cousin who everyone
on the podcast has met as well, so that's fun.
And kit Kat, my little kitty, she's with us and
it's nice. I also changed jobs. Yeah, I work at

(04:25):
Marty right now. So like I think of myself as,
you know, Queen of the Gays. Like formerly now I
was always Queen of the Gays, but now it's a
proper title. I'm gonna walk to office the office tomorrow
and be like, and can we just change my title
on the website Queen of the Gays. So that's going well,
doing heaps of like really amazing. I think we're lucky

(04:48):
to have jobs that we are genuinely so passionate about.
This is the first time since literally the first episode
of the podcast in season one, that we've been recording
in the same room together.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
It's that insane that was like January of like twenty
like nineteen twenty nineteen. I reckon, yeah damn right.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
So just to think of like all the episodes we've
been able to put out since then, I'm kind of
still proud of us.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Anyway, So the topic of this podcast for the day,
I wanted to wait in not to do something too serious.
So I wanted to have us chat about queer media time,
not queer media in terms of like a serious queer
media of like we need more representation, but a queer
media in terms of like who was your first celebrity crush? Yeah,

(05:36):
like when was the first time you saw like a
gay person on a TV show? And how'd you feel
about that? And all those sorts of things.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
I want to start this whole section by asking when
was the first time that you remember seeing or knowing
someone that's.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
Part of the LGBTQ community. Do you remember your first.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Time in the real world or on TV?

Speaker 3 (06:00):
Ooh either all whatever came first.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Hmmm. Oh, that's tricky because I feel like maybe in
my head as a young kid, I was just like, yes,
this person's in love with me, and I'm in love
with them. But it's like the Pink Power Ranger, it's
just not a gay character. I don't know. Oh, but
the Yellow Ranger is now remember vibes. Yeah, I mean
they're rainbow guys. The Power Rangers are a little bit freeey.

(06:23):
I love them. But the remember how they remade the
Power Rangers movie, and I was really excited because I
was like a massive I wanted to call my little
sister Kimberly after the Pink Ranger.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
That's how much I loved that character.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
And I'd watched it all the time, and then they
redid the movie like a few years ago or something,
and the Yellow Ranger is gay. I don't know if
you know this everyone, but my favorite color is yellow
and I take every opportunity I can to remind people
about that. So I was like, Mom, I called her.
I was like, the Yellow Rangers gay. She's like, that's
so nice. You wanted to be the Yellow Ranger. So
that's not really the first gay person I saw a media,

(06:55):
but definitely the first crash that I had in media.
And then I'm trying to think of, like the first
gay person was probably like Ellen. I'm assuming like there's
not anything significant that stands out before seeing like Ellen
as a TV host? What about you?

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Speaking of colors, I feel like the Wiggles definitely on
track to having an LGBTQ like member.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
They performed at Microgram this year.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
Yeah, because I was like, maybe someone's gonna come out
and I was waiting for it. I was like, come on,
they've gotten all this representation.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Now they got a career girl.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Now do they have like they had like a non
binary elephant or not an elephant like.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
Or something they had an elephant on stage, yeah, dancing
because the song they were doing was that the one
they did at the on Triple J or something. I
almost got to meet them. Yeah, I was in the
media bea because I was obviously working the event and
running people to and from the media bay, and the
I was gonna say, the Powerages then the Wiggles where
they're doing an interview for like Sabec or something, and

(07:54):
I was like, oh, I gotta try and get a
photo with them. But then they left with their security
guard and I was too busy being great at my
job to stop them and be like, wait, can I
furder the.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
Chokeholder that they have on Australian culture right now?

Speaker 2 (08:06):
Insane?

Speaker 3 (08:07):
Scary, and I think they're huge overseas too.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
It's so weird, Like just what is It's because we
all want to feel young again, and we want to
feel like how we felt when we were just singing
fruit salad. That's pretty good.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
Times are different. Yeah, that's a good point.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
But to like circle back on the actual questions, I
just shared a thought. But my first time like learning,
I guess learning about someone that's part of the LGBTQ community.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
I was like living out in the country. Must have
been like seven or.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Eight, like, oh, that's really young.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
Yeah, And my mum had this like best mate who
was like, really cool, we'll call her more use a
real name just.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
For like, we'll call it Jane.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
Yeah, that's the name we used for everything.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
So Jane, like like like doctor lives on a farm,
really really cool, had like you know, a couple of
kids that we were all friends with. And one day
we were just like on our way out to Jane's
farm and Jane just recently hired like a nanny, and
then it was like Kate, for example. So my mom
was explaining to me that Jane's husband wasn't going to

(09:16):
be around anymore, and I was.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
Like, okay, cool anyway. And I was like, oh cool anyway.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
And then like we went to the like the place,
and me being so observed, I was like, oh, there's
like only one bedroom for like the adults. And then
I said to my mom, I was like, where does
Kate sleep. I was like, oh, we explained to me
that they were together, and your little brain was like

(09:44):
literally exploded. I think my mom used to like tell
me about it all the time. Oh my god, that's
so cute.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
Like, how is it possible?

Speaker 2 (09:52):
Like what it's like, Oh gosh, we know what that
actually reminds me they probably were gay people that I
met at young ages in real li life, but I
probably didn't put the puzzle pieces together that they were gay.
It's not interesting is where does Kate sleep?

Speaker 3 (10:07):
Where does she sleep? Understand? I'm just so concerned about her,
like well being on the couch.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
Like but yeah, but then like we were like good
family friends with them for a really long time, so
I kind of saw a relationship like.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
Yeah, which was really sweet. They were really cute.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
That's so nice. And a doctor.

Speaker 3 (10:26):
Yeah, it's like love that for them. Yeah, yeah, adopter
of animals and.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
A farm little like very cottage call. Yeah, what's what's
because obviously we now have cottage call, which is like
very girly and like a planting flowers in your guard
and then those sorts of things. What is it for
like just farm people it's like not cottage car but
like they go and get eggs from the tins. Lesbians lesbians.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
Yeah, my partner's like a farm girl.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
Oh she's a lesbian.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
I don't I don't know, I don't know how to
explain it.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
But like I grew up on a farm, but wasn't
like I'm dubbing it lesbian.

Speaker 3 (11:12):
How are you?

Speaker 2 (11:13):
Oh god, I'm not deleting it all right. So that's
our first early ish memories where there are some other
key moments within, like I want to say, like pop culture,
but just like media history in general, that were like
gay as fuck that was significant to you, because I'm

(11:35):
also thinking, like I guess, I keep having memories pop
up for me, Like I remember I had a what
are they called VCRs, I'm getting old, and I had
like all of these you know, you could record on
the TV cartoons and stuff. So I had all these
cartoons recorded, and then at the end of that cartoon

(11:55):
was just Shania Twain. That don't impress me much, you know,
where She's like we're in the leather, and I'm like,
why do I have all children's cartoons? And then just
a Shania Twain video? That's a big gay if you
ask me, because I think everyone has a crush on Shanni.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
Twain legit and no, absolutely not.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
So there's that as well. But I'm thinking more things like, oh,
the first time that I saw the L word, I
was as still in high school, but I was just
like flicking through the TV in that one day and
being like, what the fuck is this? But I'm interested
in it. Yeah, So that was my first time seeing
The L Word, and then I didn't watch it religiously,
like I still haven't seen the full original because it

(12:39):
was like when I wasn't out too, I had no
idea what the show was even called. I was just like,
what is this that I'm watching? And then like came
back a few days later at the same ish time
and be like, I wonder if that show's some.

Speaker 3 (12:51):
Know what it was.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
And then like years later we were like, oh, I
remember that, Yeah, that's what that show's called. And then
like tried to watch some of it but couldn't get
over that the way it was filmed and stuff like
it's just it's old obviously. So I didn't watch the
whole thing.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
So just Jenny ruins everything.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
I mean, I gathered this the plot line, you know,
like because we all talk about it so much within
the lesbian community. I'm like, I feel like I know
what happens.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
Yeah, my friend when my new friends now she's actually
watching this at the moment rewatching The L Word, and
we were talking about it, Like, I feel like they
didn't want to put Jenny's character in there, so they
just like made her really ship like oh, I don't know,
that's my opinion. Yeah, but yeah, anyone that watches it
just doesn't like it.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
Well when people because everyone does this obviously like oh,
you're the you're the this of the group, you're the Shane,
you're whatever. What who do people say you are? It's
a and how do you feel?

Speaker 3 (13:43):
Culture? Like lesbian culture reference. I always get data because.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
Like, yeah, oh, we're gonna love that for you, and
I absolutely love data.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
Oh really, sometimes sometimes a bet, but mostly a data.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
Yeah that's cool. I also love that she's I definitely
have a huge rush on bed that will never end.
And then people like, yeah, but she does horrible things,
and I was like, I don't give a fuck. I
do not give a fuck.

Speaker 3 (14:08):
That's a part of her. I don't identify.

Speaker 2 (14:12):
I think that I'm probably most like I always like
identified with Alice because she was like, did the whole
magazine start? Was like journalism, and I obviously studied journalism.

Speaker 3 (14:22):
So I was like, oh my god, it's me chatty.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
And then when we came back, she had a TV show,
and I was like, oh my god, Wow, it's my future.
I'm gonna have a show just like Alice.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
I think for me it's actually it started a bit earlier,
like and little things I didn't realize. Okay, have you
seen the movie Cadet Kelly with Hillary Duff? Yes, and
I don't know where the other lady's name is. Unfortunately,
they had this weird tension like the whole movie. It
was like Hillary Duff goes to like this, like I
don't really understand what she was there for, but some
kind of.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
Way a cadet a cadet.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
Like it's kind of like not military, but like she
really sucked at it. Yeah, I remember that. But then
she had this like lady who was a little bit
older than her but like very like strict, And I
was like why you so hard to know, but like
they just always got really close and that made me
nervous all the time.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
I was like, oh that was when I was young.
But like I was thought, there was tension and Lion
King so like.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
You know, there was no one can tell you that
COVID pull everyone in the Lion King. Why do you
all of your stories keep reminding me of gay ship
that happened to me as a kid, like I remember
and even now I will go on huge rants about
how fucking gay all the Barbie movies are and as

(15:37):
like as like a little femme and like Barbie was
my thing. I loved Brats. I'm really happy that Brats
have come back now, I you can, we could do
an entire fucking episode about me talking about how gay
a ton of the Barbiees movies are.

Speaker 3 (15:51):
How does she go from Kim Possible?

Speaker 2 (15:53):
Oh yeah, she didn't have a crush on her obviously.
I also had a really big crush on Shirah. And
then when that got remade and she is now gay,
I was like, this is all of the characters that
I loved as a child, I've now gay, and I
think it's a sign.

Speaker 1 (16:10):
I think it helped me develop my gator. I think
they always gave off the same.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
Energy or.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
Es.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
Yep. And then I called my mom again, like whenever
something gay happens with my childhood mar I'm like, Mom,
she was gay now, like she kissed what's the name,
I can't even remember the character Cattra at the end
of the show when she was like my mom was
like I'm sure she did. MA take her sure like
maybe maybe they hugged, And I was like, I will
send you the video right now. Don't try and tell

(16:37):
me that this isn't gay because they full on kiss
or spoiler sorry about it.

Speaker 1 (16:42):
Oh my god, I was just while was he here,
I've just googled something because when I think, I told like,
I'll fast forward a few few years. But I was
really obsessed with provial lies. I think I already mentioned
that there was like there was an out character a name.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
Yeah, I never really watched the show, but I know
what you mean.

Speaker 3 (16:58):
And she's beautiful Shane Mitchell, so pretty. Yeah, and she
was like out and it was like really nice anyway.

Speaker 1 (17:05):
And then like after high school, I think I started
to realize and then like, well, no, I knew, but
then like started to accept it, and I had friends
like recommend things to watch. And one of my best
mates she said, the first movie she ever watched was
Imagine Me and You.

Speaker 3 (17:20):
And I don't know if you've seen it, but is
that the one? Easy?

Speaker 1 (17:25):
So it's got like Piper Perabo and Lena Headley in it,
and I'll just show you while we're standing here.

Speaker 3 (17:32):
We're sitting here.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
The girl from Coyote Ugly and I'm so terrible remembering
actress's name. That's the like, oh okay, wait, this is gay.

Speaker 3 (17:41):
It is gay.

Speaker 2 (17:41):
I haven't seen that.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
Oh my god, I'll have to watch it.

Speaker 1 (17:44):
But essentially, long story shot, this like woman who's getting married,
like they.

Speaker 3 (17:52):
What happened?

Speaker 1 (17:52):
They meet this like florist at another wedding that they
were at, and then she falls in love with the florist,
and the whole movies like essentially just them like should
we should we not?

Speaker 3 (18:01):
H you know, you should get married? Like it's crazy
and it.

Speaker 1 (18:05):
Has this big ruin it but it's hell cheesy. It's
almost like a Hallmark movie. But they're just like yeah,
basically yeah, like like The Wedding Planner but for gays.

Speaker 3 (18:17):
But it was a good movie.

Speaker 2 (18:18):
That's nice.

Speaker 1 (18:19):
Nice because back then, back in my day ten years old, legally,
like all of the game movies were always like really
sad or like.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
Yeah, I feel like there's still a trope that we see,
like there's always very very few like lesbian movies. Have
I watched is one? She lesbian at the start of
the movie, and at the end of the movie, it's
always like, oh, she's straight and now she's like, oh
my god, I don't know what to do these feelings,
and then she leaves her partner or whatever. Like it's
always a finding yourself, which those stories are important. But

(18:50):
I could not name one movie to you where she's
lesbian at the start of the movie in lesbian.

Speaker 3 (18:55):
At the other movie?

Speaker 2 (18:56):
What's that movie? Someone's gonna remind me of the name.
And it's like people only have to watch it for
the sex scenes because they're amazing. Yes, I.

Speaker 3 (19:10):
Was gonna talk about that. I was like, I don't
know if I should mention this one.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
I can't believe. It's just blushing so hard right now.
Yes it was. And that's a horrible movie, Like the
scripting so shit, the scene in the car where it's raining,
so fucking dumb. But people only ever watch it because
the sex scenes are really hot. Yeah, sometimes you want

(19:34):
to watch a really bad movie but because it's gay,
you know.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
Yeah, Like now, like what is it happiest season, and
like like yeah, Stuart is just.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
Out here and every yeah, each year I try and
have like I call it Lesbian Christmas, and that will
be the film that we watch every year. Now, Wow,
and there's also I think in the world of animation
as someone who's like a little bit of a nerd,
and like, we'll watch obviously the Sheer animated series that
came out bits and pieces of animes and stuff. Cartoons
are doing incredible stuff, and obviously there are some animes

(20:03):
that are more targeted towards an adult audience. But like
as a kid, I would have loved to have watched
she With the cartoon series, and all of those characters
have different body types. There are like there's two gay
dads in the show. There are there's like lesbian couples
that are married and they're both princesses, and then there's
like Shira who finds out that she's gay and stuff.

(20:24):
I feel like we could talk about this for hours,
and it's like I'd be interested to hear what everyone
else's queer show, or like recommendations for movies or shows
that we should watch that are gay or have more
diversity and stuff as well. Yeah, because I'm here for
it all the time.

Speaker 1 (20:39):
Yeah, if you could go back and then like reorder
the way that you accessed a few things, which one
would you put it? Like the start, So if someone
was listening to this, for example, that's not out or
hasn't consumed any queer media, even though they're listening to this,
which doesn't make any sense.

Speaker 2 (20:57):
They found their way here on they didn't realize it
was like accident gay indigenous podcasts.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
Yeah, Like, which what would you recommend is like the
first thing to watch?

Speaker 2 (21:06):
That's a really hard question because obviously, like I said,
I would have loved to have those queer cartoons as
a kid. So part of me is like, oh my god,
start with these, because like you'll get everything you're in
a child ever wanted. And then another part of me
is like, god, I can't think of what movie I
would start with. Maybe that, No, I don't know what's yours.

Speaker 3 (21:25):
I think mine's the one that I watched first of mine.

Speaker 2 (21:28):
Kelly, I was trying to think of that that gymnast
girl a sticking that's not gay, But come on, you
didn't have a crushure as hell in the ice bar.

Speaker 3 (21:41):
Yeah? Stop, that was too much. That was too much.

Speaker 1 (21:46):
I literally like have always wanted to just be that athletic,
to like jump in the bath and have my eight
abs poking out that we can dreamt.

Speaker 2 (21:57):
Yeah, and I love all of it.

Speaker 3 (21:58):
Yeah, what was the show you were talking about? So
I got really distracted for.

Speaker 1 (22:03):
The rest of it. That movie Imagine Me and You.
It's like, not necessarily oh you about things, but it's
like it ends really well.

Speaker 3 (22:12):
Anyway, let's wrap this up. Yeah, let's somehow.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
