Speaker 1 (00:00):
But we discovered a couple of things over the weekend,
number one about shanetaking photos. But most importantly we got
to revisit something that all of you were instrumental in
helping us with at the end of last year, where
basically Mel Dezeldi, one of our radio family but South Australian,
was really really struggling. She'd fought off cancer a number
of times, but then MND motor neuron disease had got

(00:22):
her and she'd moved into the Mary Potter Hospice and
for her it was always about Christmas for her and
her three sons in her family and christs Eeldi a
voice that a lot of you are probably familiar with.
But unfortunately it didn't look like she was going to
be able to be around for Christmas last year, so
we got stuck into bringing Christmas to her early.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
What is MND, Yeah, you basically get trapped in your
mornie for some of me, is your minds still the same?

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Radiotherapy isn'tentirely covered up how much she needed alone he
is thirty five thousand. We are bringing the spirit of
Christmas to Mel. She wanted to get home desperately that
is now not possible, so for her it is Christmas.
Wouldn't it be amazing if we could actually get Oprah on.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
Well, we just wanted to give you blessings and greetings
because you are such an inspiration.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
You are the greatest human spirit. We've never met a
woman like your banside.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah, I'm going to give to an interesting this beautiful cause.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Well, maybe fifty thousand dollars would get you a long
way towards being out of debt, but the generosity has
been amazing. Seventy eighty seven hundred and ten dollars.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
You live with something for so long you don't you
notice it. Yeah, we didn't know what we were going
to Oprah.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Wow, unbelievable. I mean, Oprah Winfrey got involved like it
was just the whole thing was just absolutely incredible. We
had our local stars, Hans Willsie, we even had the
Hiccup kid coming even singing a Christmas carol. It was beautiful,
and it was beautiful because so many of you helped
out somebody other than yourselves and really cleared the debt
that existed because of those medical bills and brought Christmas

(02:03):
to mel early. And then yesterday we caught up with
the one and only Christas Eldi after the celebrations that
basically his beautiful wife's life had been honored on the
national stage. Well on Saturday night, I had the absolute
privilege on behalf of every single one of you listening,
to be able to call it up with Shane on
stage to receive an ACRA this is the Australian Commercial

(02:27):
Radio Award for Best Community Campaign. And then I had
the absolute pleasure of picking up the phone and facetiming
Christis Eldi, who was back here in Adelaide, and he
joins us, now, hey there mate.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Hey, their congratulations guys.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
No congratulations to you. This is and Am. We're saying
that because that was Mel was such a radio nerd
that that was one of the things she said, if
this bloody doesn't get an ACRA.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Oh yeah. She was so aware of the work that
goes into something like that and she just wanted you
guys to get some recognition for it. And for those
who don't know, like the acres come along every year
and people who work in radio sort of mixed feelings
because you're all your eyes because there's a lot of
work that goes into just making a submission, but you

(03:12):
know you've done some good work, so you want to
get the chance to be recognized for it. But sometimes
you've got to distill like weeks and weeks of work
and audio and video and the different people you've spoken to,
and you've got to get it down to something like
sixty seconds and then you put it in and then
you might not even get nominated. So yeah, I know,

(03:33):
I know you guys were absolutely thrilled to be even nominated,
but to get the win and to have it presented
by Amanda Keller on the night just fantastic. I can
feel Meals directing the whole thing.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
From a bathroom and there's no doubt. I mean, Hans,
we have Willsie, we have a hiccup kid, And of
course amount of Keller was part of it, and that
was the best. I mean, it was just full circle.
Her getting to say this one was very very close
to me and be able to call this out. So Chris,
I guess how are you? I mean, we were very emotional.
There are a lot of tears on Saturday, and how
are you going?

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Yeah, I'm I was going okay up until I just
said that package. Yeah, no, I'm going okay, and I'm
just thrilled and delighted that you and all the team
got that recognition and that you know, you really deserved
it because you came along, You guys came along possibly

(04:24):
the lowest point for us.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Yeah, man, we know we want a freaking trophy. Man,
stop making us cry. The reason that we are really
toughed about this is it because actually isn't because of myself,
all Shane. This is about your family. It is about
all the listeners that were part of this because that's
where it happens, and all the people behind the scenes
that work so hard, including your extended family up there

(04:52):
at Power FM. They were the first people that contacted
us and we contacted and it was just a massive
celebration of what the most important thing, which is Mel's
life and her love for you and her boys and
her wider family. So Chris, congratulations, This one is for
you and her just as much as it's for anybody else.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Oh well, congratulations to you guys too, and so thrilled
for you all, and thanks for all the hard work.
You know, it's something that I'll never forget.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
And also this thing you know you're involved in Cares Week.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
At the moment too, there's two point six million Australians
who are caring for family members and friends, and about
a quarter of a million are under the age of
twenty five and they've still got.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
To go to work and look after their own mental
health and go to school or whatever. So it's a
week where we can just you know, shine the light
on them a bit and be aware of what they
have to do.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Well, I'll tell you what for it to happen in
this week that Mel Dezeldie is still producing from up
there above. Absolutely people can find out more information on
National Cares Week, how to support the cares of the
Cares Week website just caresweek dot com dot a year.
And also a massive shout out to the high team
at Mary Potter Hospice. I know how special they were
to you and how special they were to so many

(06:05):
families in South Australia. So Chris, you and I are
going to catch up and we might take this trophy
down to the entire team.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Hey, oh, that sounds like fun.
