Speaker 1 (00:00):
I heartshoal Haven.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
You have to do it to know it. Like, if
you're a writer, you know the feeling. If you're not
a writer, you don't know the feeling.

Speaker 3 (00:07):
Get a Pete Andrea with you, and this episode of
I heartshoal Haven is bound to get your motor running.
Let's be honest, we all at some time have looked
into the rearview mirror and seen a pack of motorcycle
riders cruising down the highway and thought the worst. As
police target those motorcycle gangs listed as outlaw. That stereotype

(00:27):
of the big mean bikey can cause many riders to
shy away from the idea of what they call riding
in company. But here in the shoal Haven we have
a posse of socially motivated riders and there's absolutely no
pressure to patch up and pledge allegiance. The group started
last year with a simple Facebook post. The first rider
tracted about six riders. Now they've got eleven hundred keen

(00:50):
followers who all enjoy the thrill of filling the rush
of freedom that cruising shoal Haven's roads brings. Are recently
fired our own hary and joined group founders TJ and
Maddie B and about thirty riders that rained from el
players right through to the experience.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Two will die.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
Hards on talking with two of the organizers of the
shoul Haven Motorcycle Group. First of all TJ, Maddy B.
AKATJ and Maddy B. Firstly, TJ, I noticed mid last
year a Facebook post go up asking for riders come

(01:29):
along and join go for a social last you, what
about ten motorcyclists.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
What's the latest count.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
We're nearly at eleven hundred, so it's been pretty good.
The community has helped out a fair bit. As I said, Yeah,
Maddie and I were just bored one day. We've been
riding for years and we just wanted friends to ride with.
We've sat down at the front of his house, made
a group, tried to find a name for a while,
had a few weird names in there, but we settled
with Shaving Motorcycle Rise. And we've been since October last

(01:58):
year now, so it's gone pretty good.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
So what was the weirdest name that you came up with?

Speaker 4 (02:02):
Oh, John, I had an idea of Flaming Wheelie Boys
or something like that.

Speaker 5 (02:08):
Weird or something.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
We used to do a lot of stunt writing, so
and we got our stunt writing. Now it's a bit
more community, community.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Based, right.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
So the idea behind it was, yeah, getting writers together.
We're surprised at how quickly writers joined.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (02:23):
To be honest, we had a normal group.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
They were about six or seven of us, and then
it got to a point where we.

Speaker 5 (02:29):
Were I'd go to ask people. We had a joke.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
I used to just run up people and ask them
to join the page, just like run up to them.

Speaker 5 (02:35):
So people were that was up running joke.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
But then it got to a point where I asked
people to join the page and they tell me they're
already member. So I haven't asked, haven't asked anybody to
join you hasn't it hasn't already been a member for
a while.

Speaker 5 (02:45):
Now.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Are you surprised and how quickly it took off? Yeah,
very yeah.

Speaker 5 (02:50):
Very quickly. It's it's good. We love it.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
We've done it for years and to get the follow.

Speaker 5 (02:56):
We have and all the giveaways we do, they're all
all help.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
So what is it about riding a bike with mates?

Speaker 5 (03:02):
I'd say it's the freedom.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Yeah, you just can't beat it, Yeah, you can't beat it,
like it's you have to do it to know it. Like,
if you're a writer, you know the feeling. If you're
not a writer, you don't know the feeling. It's just
nothing matters. And you could have things to be going
wrong in life. You could be arguing with your wife,
your husband, whatever whatever it is. Job could be going
bad and hop on the bike for the wind in
your face and it's just your forck.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
It's very different, isn't it when you're riding by yourself.
Then all of a sudden you get a group of
writers around you and you've got almost to this sense
of solidarity and camaraderie.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Yeah, so it's riding by yourself is okay, but yeah,
you just you feel everyone's energy, the way someone's writing.
If someone does something good, you always hypermarkets. It's just
the it's just the friendship and just makeship is really
all it is.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
So it begans sort of like once a week and
now how many times a week are you going out? Oh?

Speaker 5 (03:53):
Yeah it was.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
It was organized for once a fortnight to begin with,
and then yeah, Maddie and I just.

Speaker 5 (03:58):
Kept getting more people. Regular people come up.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
We used to meet it because we still meet at
seven eleven. That's been our meat spot for since we started.
Now they're pretty happy with it. They've spoke to us
and they're fine with that. But yeah, it's easy. There's
at least three three to five a week going up now.
Everyone's going up the mountain or up Nashows or Maccuorie
Pass or just down a dull away.

Speaker 5 (04:17):
Yeah, Robert Pie shops can run.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
I noticed many a couple of L players have arrived
here today, first time out with you guys. I suppose
it's a really good learning environment for them too, because
you've got experienced writers like you two guys.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
I'm anna L play to myself, so yeah, but I
may have been riding for about as long as I have.
Unfortunately let his license expire and things like that, and
this is his fourth time at his L so he
doesn't get his p's now I'm going to be upset.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
Right, So, fourth time on your LS, do you think
you'll get it right this time? Yeah? Yeah, I'm going
to get so yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
No.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
It's good with the community when you get people who've
never rode before who come with us. We've had people
who there's always in the group, people who are all
more advanced than others, but it's good when they come
together and everyone sort of when we do like group rides,
we've got people in the front who do their own thing.
Then you've got to middle park and then most of
the LP plate riders are at the back, with an
experienced rider at the back to sort.

Speaker 5 (05:09):
Of go to them and things like that.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Partner the long at ninety k's yeah pretty much.

Speaker 5 (05:12):
Yeah, I mean we're all doing one hundred anyway, and so.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
You've gone out and developed and evolved the group, so
now you're doing fundraisers and stuff like that. I believe
recently did a run up to in the m X store.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Yeah, so we did the We always do our monthly
meats to where there certain designations, but then we do
the Blake Meats and Blake Knights and things like that.
The most recent was the Christmas right we did down
the barrier.

Speaker 5 (05:37):
That was good.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
And then, yeah, as I said in the page, with
a lot of things for the twenty twenty five, we're
looking to a lot more community and fundraiser style, feed
the homeless kind of days and just get out and
ShW the community. That's not all about just us being
and idiots. On bikes, riding around, hooning around the town.
We also want to help out and put the money
that we make back in the community.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
And I've noticed that you've already sort of forged allegiances
with some of the other groups around town, the vets
and ulysses.

Speaker 5 (06:02):
Yeah, so we went, we met up with them.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Mike I believe his name is inboxed me on Facebook
personally asks us to come to the toy meet. We've
had a few other pages who combined. We've actually since
the pages started, there's been three or four bike pages
that had twenty to thirty members who were just friends
mucking around. And then yeah, as I said, that's what
it's like. We've had people you just shut down up pages.

(06:26):
We've just sort of combined all our pages in the
one and it's been pretty good.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
More soon on the sean Haven motorcycle rides and how
the enjoyment of clocking up the case every weekend is
helping to rev up donations for well deserving local charities.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
I heart shoal Haven. I Heart shoal Haven.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
Good Apte Andrew with you, a proud Harley owner and
one of the many weekend warrior is hitting a local
Highway with the sean Haven Motorcycle Rydes group.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
You could say the only gang.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Like aspect of this group is based around doing good
deeds and enjoying the company of like minded social two wheelers.
Just nine months ago, a couple of bikers decided to
get a group together to enjoy social rides. But since
then its membership has grown to the point where they
just might need to produce their own merchandise. But you
won't find any dirty deeds at the heart of this

(07:23):
biker group, only good deeds.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
My father always said, if you don't know, if you
don't try. So I've emailed everybody and anybody under the
sun ticket sponsorship deals for the page, and a lot
of those are coming through. But the biggest one is
Shark at the moment offered to do all our pails,
so all our custom shirts for our custom.

Speaker 5 (07:39):
Events and rides, and that they're going to be handling that.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
So once that's live, I'll drop a link and everyone
can go purchase their shirts, and then the money we
make back from that will go back into future rides
and more community events.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Yeah. So, and you really sound like community mine at
young blokes.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Yeah, I guess we were young ones, and we were
a bit stupid when we used to start writing. But
it's once you get older and start writing more people
who just want to ride. It's you get out of
the silly kind of style and you just want to ride.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
Now Inevitably, you know one or two people do have
a do have a bit of a an incident on bikes,
and I believe you've had one.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
Does that put you off?

Speaker 5 (08:17):
I've had five. It doesn't put me off.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
It's a bit scary when you when you're laying up
in the hospital bed thinking about what could have gone
wrong and what didn't go wrong. But I've got three
young kids and a missus at home who have supported
me through everything. She knows that bikes are everything to
me and that I'll never stop riding. It does get
scary at times, but I guess it's just it's going
to happen. If I it's gonna happen to you, it's
going to happen. There's nothing you can do with avoid

(08:41):
it at the time, as long as you walk out
of it. Unfortunately in the case, some people don't walk
out of it, and that's just part.

Speaker 5 (08:49):
Of the game.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Yeah, and I suppose this is a good opportunity to
send a message to motorists as well to keep an
eye out for bike riders.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
So basically, I've had it before, We've all had it.
People cut you off because they can't see you. They
always say loud pipes save lives. It's not really the case.
It's just being seen being a presence. And as long
as everyone rides safe, rides their own ride, you should
be fine.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
And the safety aspect of motorcypher riding today, even to
get your LMS, you've got to go through a rigorous,
upright training course. It's something that I think even card
drivers should have to go through.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
Yeah, I personally think the rider course should be longer
than two days. I mean, you can evaluate someone's ability
to start and move a motorbike in two days. But
I don't understand why. There's why it's not bigger. Like,
don't get me wrong, I love only two days to
get out and ride the bike, but they after two
days they let you go on the highway. The good
thing about is most people go with other people who
ride and they sort of help each other out. They've

(09:52):
got intercoms and talk and things like that. But it's
just the people who don't. They just go out by
themselves and it's just dangerous.

Speaker 3 (09:58):
Now you've got one one of the best backdrops in
Australia to go writing in the shoal Haven. There's some
pretty amazing rides around here.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
Yeah, so I think we're pretty blessed to that.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Michelle Haven has probably, in my opinion, probably one of
the best spots to ride. You've got Macquari Pass, you've
got Kenary Valley, Stone throws Away, you've got Nashos, Seacliff Bridge.
You can't beat going through a Seacliff Bridge on a
nice day when in your face everything just smooth. It's
probably one of the best writing and I've done, and
I've wrote all over Australia.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
I reckon Bond Scott right on would have to be
up there amongst the best songs getting around.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
Yeah, ac DC, you can't go wrong with it. I
mean it depends people have their own opinion. Personally, we
all like to listen to white girl music.

Speaker 5 (10:40):
If you know what that is. It's pop culture music.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
When you're writing Katie Perry, Lady Gage, all that kind
of stuff. It sounds weird, but it hits on the bike.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
It goes firing up for their first ride with the
group are Will and Ryler, eld players looking to improve
their writing skills. First time riders with the group. What
made you decide to come along and have a little Uh.

Speaker 6 (11:03):
Yeah, I've been sitting on the group for a while
and seeing heaps of post going off each time, and
I just got my bike back on the road, so
I thought I'd come out, have a squizze, go for
a ride.

Speaker 1 (11:14):
Got your l plates and you've got your lady with you.

Speaker 2 (11:16):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
How does he go on the bike? Yeah?

Speaker 5 (11:20):
Pretty well, pretty safe, speed.

Speaker 1 (11:23):
On it all right.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
I guess you're you're a new a new rider. A
really good way to learn is to ride with other riders.

Speaker 5 (11:32):
Yeah, that is true.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
Yeah, so you're looking forward to it?

Speaker 5 (11:36):
Yeah, I'm looking forward to it.

Speaker 6 (11:37):
It's pretty good.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
Travis and Georgia are both experienced riders on big machines
who realish getting out and riding in company. One of
the very few ladies who've turned out for the in
the in the wet today. So you must love your bike.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
You must love riding absolutely absolutely, idea. I love it why.

Speaker 4 (11:57):
It's fun, of course, it's relaxing most of the time
and it's a great community. So I love meeting people
and it's just a it's a release, like it's it's
just a hobby that turned into a lifestyle pretty much.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
So, and I suppose the Shaul Haven made a socle group.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
It's it's a god seend because you know, it's a
community and they're doing some good things.

Speaker 4 (12:18):
Yeah, they're also it's really nice to find like this
is a smaller town, Like it's not like Sydney or
all along. You've got motorcycle groups everywhere, so it's nice
to have like a little niche group that do the
little group rides go up to Cayama. It's a nice
little community.

Speaker 6 (12:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
What's it like looking at her tailpipe every time he
gave her a ride.

Speaker 6 (12:36):
Oh it's a little bit annoying thinking you're find a girl,
But what can you do. I suppose we're all in
the group together and that's just how it goes.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
What do you like about the group?

Speaker 6 (12:47):
It's just a small community, just a bunch of guys
and girls get together and go for a ride together
and just have a bit of fun. Nothing nothing crazy.

Speaker 3 (12:55):
Seems like a you know, lots of smiles, a bit
of noise, but lots of smile, yeah.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
Mostly smiles.

Speaker 6 (13:02):
Some noise, but it's just all around pulled together and
have has some fun.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
The set bike wouldn't be a bike without a bit
of noise behind it.

Speaker 6 (13:10):
No that said, Louder the better.

Speaker 5 (13:13):
Definitely louder the better.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
That's our episode for now. You can find out more
on the shoal Haven Motorcycle Rides group via its Facebook page.
Just join the group and you'll find out exactly where
the next adventure is happening.

Speaker 1 (13:27):
So I'll see you out there. I'm Pete Andrea. Catch
you next time. I heeart shal Haven
