Speaker 1 (00:00):
Job mission with Jones and Amanda, so this was a
fun challenge. Mama Mia asked seven Australian women. Melissaly On
was one of them. Norelda Jacobs to Rea Pit a
variety of women to write a letter to their twelve
year old self and you and me. This was in
light of last Sunday being International Day of the Girl.
(00:23):
So these women are big deals. You're a big deal.
That's how I started. You're a big deal. I'm a
bit of a big deal. Can I read you what
I had? And I just sort of put it in
point from It was the easiest thing I've ever written,
because I just thought, my twelve year old self, bang,
here it is. Here we go, dear twelve year old Amanda.
I'm writing this to you from your future kitchen. And
guess what you've learnt to cook? And you have a dog. Exciting.
(00:47):
I spent years nagging my parents to get a dog.
That's right, when you let you have a dog. Now,
my dad grew up on a cane farm where they
were working animals. Dogs weren't pets, No dog dogs weren't pets.
And Dad said, you know, when you get your own place,
when you get a cane fart. When you're one hundred
and fifty eight years old, it can happen for you.
And I've said there's a husband and children too. The
children came along when we I me, you, I don't
(01:10):
know how to talk to my twelve old self. We're
in our late thirties. I know you think that's ancient,
but that's something I want to tell you. Don't fear
getting older. I'm going to get emotional. I don't know why,
because I'm thinking of my mum too. I said, it's great,
and don't worry that you don't shine early. Don't be
intimidated by people who seem so confident. Because it seems
that everyone else knows what they're doing, and everyone else
(01:31):
knows what they want and where they're going. It's okay
to muddle through, and as scary as it is, take
every opportunity that comes your way. Don't let fear or
lack of confidence stop you. Every new job I've been
off it like beyond two thousand doing radio. All that
stuff was so fearful. My instinct was I wanted to say, no,
I'm not one of those people who grasps at opportunities.
(01:53):
I've I've had to force myself to and that's where
the payoff lies is taking that leap of faith, doesn't
it And if it doesn't work out, you've still taken
that leap of faith. And I've said now I need
to tell you to be kind to Mum. You will
miss her every day, and when your own kids come along,
you will understand that smothering love. And please take better
(02:15):
care of treasures. Letters from Mum, birth certificates, Auntie Aras's candlesticks.
These were these beautiful candlesticks. Well that's the thing. Mum's aunt,
who lives in America, gave Mum her old candlesticks. They
had dangly bits on them, and I remember distinctly the
night it happened. Mum and Dad were out. I took
(02:36):
the little hanging bits off and pretended they were earrings,
and I lost them in our own home. So before
you wrote the letter, you've lost the stick candlesticks or
read I'm hopeless, and Mum had to have try and
have some replacements made that never quite match. I now
have the candlesticks, but they're missing the dangly bits. I've said,
(02:56):
you will be a collector of crap, but you're hairless
with the stuff that matters. There will be stings and hurts,
but believe it or not, you'll never get over not
making the school netball team that time. You know what,
this one's still really hurts. So when Jack doesn't make
it into something, I say it doesn't matter, I think, no,
it does matter. I still remember I was playing netball
(03:17):
with the Ladybirds but didn't get on a school team,
and the sting of it still stays with me. But
I've said, you know what, that's okay. These things will
serve to make you a better friend, a better parent,
a bet broadcaster when you're a million years old like
I am. Now you're in for a great ride, so relax,
and I've ended with the most emotional bit of all.
You will meet Barry Manilow, but you won't marry him.
(03:40):
Spoiler alert he's gay. What a bombshell. I mention, stings
never go away. You'll be working with an enigmatic, attractive
cohor when's that happening? Wow? Things are looking at the
emotional about you? Still the earrings? Good on you. It's
(04:02):
seventeen past International Day of the Girl. Good on you,
Good on you, Thanks sir, with join Z and Amanda
