Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jersey and Amanda jam Nation Well.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Counting Crows have enchanted listeners worldwide for three decades with
their sweet, soulful, and intricate take on timeless rock and roll.
They exploded onto the music scene in nineteen ninety three.
The band has sold more than twenty million records worldwide.
WHOA and We're thrilled Our next guess is one of
the founding members of frontman for Counting Crows, Adam Duritz.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Hello, well, hello, here is twenty million and enchanting as.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Ever as enchanting as ever. You know, we actually just
played accidentally in love. I didn't realize that you were
nominated for an Academy Award for that song. You got
a Golden Globe nomination for that song, a Grammy Award
nomination for that song. Did you write the song for
the film or you had the song in your back
pocket ready to go?

Speaker 1 (00:44):
What wrote it for the film? I like to think
of it as losing an Academy Award, losing e Grammy,
and losing a.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Golden Glow nominated four That's how we prefer to say.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
And so did they come to you and say, right,
we want this? We got this? Ogre I want you
to make a nice song about it.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Yeah, they came and this they talked about the movie,
and they showed me almost the entire movie, and they
showed me storyboards for the rest, and then they gave
me a I asked them for like a little DVD
of the scenes, and then I went and worked on it.
And I was really excited about that because that kind
of stuff is you know, it's timeless.

Speaker 4 (01:18):
Yeah, but it still stands up and it's like mister Jones.
In the career of my radio career, we've used that
for many primise for me being a Giones.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Music for promos. For me, that works for both them.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Some feeling I left out right. I feel like I
could you do something for a man kill, something you
could put in there.

Speaker 4 (01:36):
But when that came out in nineteen ninety three, I
remember exactly where I was and that song was so exciting.
The first time I heard it, I just what, this
is going to be a massive hit.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
And then here we are all these years later. It's
like thirty years.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
It's almost like we planned it out.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
It's nuts.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Can I ask a question, why is my mic so
little and skinny compared to your mind?

Speaker 2 (01:59):
We have industrial strength. MIC's for our egos. Mine is
wood paneled, and Jonesy's chrome.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
What happened was these these are the Ari twenties microphones,
and a lot of drummers put them in the bass
drum in the old days. But there are a great
radio mic And when we got these, they said, you
want a golden microphone and I said, no, no, that's
that's so old, that's very trump Yeah, I said, what
about a chrome one like a motorcycle?

Speaker 2 (02:22):
And then they asked, jokingly, how about a wood paneled
one like the Brady car from the Brady Bunk and
they I said it as a joke, and they made it.
Some people say it looks like a bit of a
number two.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
But I have never thought of that. Being with everything
you've been seeing in me this morning.

Speaker 4 (02:38):
I'm sorry, Adam, but you're the first person that's ever
come into this studio to notice that.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Oh well, it's hard to miss and you're very well.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
This microphone you've got is dreadful, and I apologize and
recording I've said to the technicians here, I've been here
for some time now.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
I said, you know, we're going to do something about
this microphone. And I said you will get around to it,
so you know that could happen.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
Yeah, magical.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
I came in today, I fixed it.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
I'd be excited if for future generations I helped make
the change that that you know, I do it for
the kids, and I'll put your name on it and
be amazing.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
We'll call it the Durids.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
Yeah, with a little like a plaque. Yeah, like it's
a very small plaque.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
What color would your microphone be?

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Like?

Speaker 3 (03:18):
If I got crying the man who's got wood?

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Yeah, I don't know, I got admit it. I would
like to come up with a really funny response to
this one, but I'm stumped on that.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
Give it some thought. We'll get back to you, studs.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Studs, Oh, it's excited like red locks?

Speaker 3 (03:31):
What about the drug?

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Because you dreadlocks?

Speaker 3 (03:34):
Because Adam had that, They went.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
I got the reference.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
Did you find and I only know this, I never
had drenk.

Speaker 4 (03:42):
Just in case you've forgotten, I never had dreadlocks, but
I had a big mullet and I found sometimes your
head just got heavy.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Did do you feel that your head used to get
heavy with the dreadlocks?

Speaker 1 (03:52):
Yeah? The real thing was though that I don't think
i'd I hadn't been able to just like wash my
hair in a long time. That way, when I when
I shave my head for about a year, I would
pass by. I'd be at friends houses or in my house.
I passed by anything with a faucet, really, and I
would like look around, and then I would go in
the room, close the door, and stick my head into
the sink and then just grab the handtown and dry

(04:13):
it off. It was so refreshing, and I was so
not used to being able to do it. For about
a year, I just constantly washed my head.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
One unusual ritual. Your friends must have thought.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Anybody knew. No, I kept it very secretive, and well.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
I hope you don't want to wash too much because
I know you're going to blues Fest and this famous
for kind of mud and hippies in a great way,
Bluesfest is amazing, but it does seem to be that
time of year where it palls with rain. So have
you got your glosses, You've got your gum boots, are
ready to go?

Speaker 1 (04:41):
I got them all. We've played it three or four
times rain every time. I don't think so, no, I
don't you know what I don't. Let's be honest about this.
I had no idea and.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Also with the dreadlocks, you wouldn't have felt the rain
on your head.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
No, it's like an umbrella at times. Especially there was
periods where I had it sort of up. It looked
like an umbrella, an apple.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
I'd luck to open it indoors. I know Adam well
and with that, it's so great to meet you and
have you in the studio.

Speaker 4 (05:14):
The but a Miracle Tour kicks off this month, so
you're off to New Zealand, but then you're going to
come back. Get your tickets at livenation dot com dot au.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Adam Durance, thank you so much for being on our show.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
